The largest problem with PvP is the players. The Feds spend all that time doing missions and go into PvP doing the same combat style. It does not work. Cryptic needs to come up with some missions to teach the Fed player how to PvP while they are still doing PvE.
Some ideas to teach the Feds:
Never Fed ball up. No more than two or three Feds in one location.
Never go back to the place where you was just killed.
Never fly, one person at a time, into a group of three or more Klingons.
Join a fleet that has an idea on what it is doing. A fleet PvP ladder would help on that.
LT8 to LT 11 missions that are as hard as doing PvP for that level
LC8 to LC11 " " " " " " " " " " " "
CT8 to CT11 " " " " " " " " " " " "
RA3 to RA5 missions that are as hard as doing PVP
i think that there is also a problem with the factions and pvp in itself. feds tend to go for space more often and klingons like the ground. but yeah i also blame cryptic
I just don't see how it is Cryptic's fault. It's the players who need to figure out this stuff. There is plenty of "scaffolding" in the game system that provides information (baring the typos and the few unclear descriptions, which are all being cleaned up) for players to figure out how to accomplish goals. So, It is Cryptic's fault some people are not using critical thinking? I'm afraid not.
Fact- Mask Energy Sig, Hyper Impulse engines- fly striaght into a pack of Klinks - 5-10
shoot a giant plasma ball- zap out -they try to chase-
Fact- Polarize Hull, Stops tractor beams
Fact- Use meteors and stations etc to hide behind
the evidence is clear - I can Fed ball up. be with more than two or three Feds in one location.
go back to the place where i was just killed.
fly, one person at a time, into a group of three or more Klingons.
and never join a fleet that has an idea on what it is doing.
readers keep in mind boards. they just be people yap'n
Fact- if you pvp and level in this manner content is not an issue - 2? 3 ? months how old is this game? at any rate - 2 characters- leuitennt commander 3
Fact- i bought this game because i saw a commercial watching a rerun of star trek and did not know it was an mmo. or what an mmo is- but it seems to me that pvp is the key difference
Fact- Eve online has a pretty good rep talking to youth - you hafta like spaceships so its niche - and it would be boring for the shoot spy guys of tommorrow- the point is that Cryptic is doing good from what i
see
the evidence is clear- Atomic Masterminds in the land of Forever
Unfortunately, I find that my requests for the Klingons to decloak so that I may avoid them fall on deaf ears.
Have you ever played as a fed?
I am talking about a Klink ball that you can see. Yes, i do also play a Fed. I try to avoid it since most Fed players have their head stuck up their backside.
The learning curve is a steep one for sure. It's a hell of an adjustment to go from killing mindless A.I. to playing against some of these folks who actually think. When I made the switch and took my first crack at PvP I made every imaginable mistake but after playing almost exclusively PvP for a while now... I still TRIBBLE up a lot actually, but at least I know where I went wrong.
I'm a bit confused as to why you would suggest that Feds not ball up? As it is, that's just about the only thing that will give them any chance of surviving an attack. Klinks who split up to take a shot at stragglers have a better shot at at least escaping a failed attempt than their Fed counterpart. If you split the Feds up at all they are more likely to be taken down by the Klinks who if they are worth their salt aren't going to run two teams and still get to decide where and when the attack goes down.
We've been beating the Fed Ball into people's heads since the start of the game. Now maybe Cryptic will keep moving down this whiny road that leads to Fed > Klinks and the Fed Ball will no longer be necessary. At this point in time splitting up would put you on the short bus to BOOMsville elementary.
The ball itself isn't the whole strat, need good players in it
On my fed, I do generally feel better staying close to the other feds, while on my klink, I'm more agressive with the objectives solo or in pairs.
maybe we need some new dymanic abilities
when near 3 or more players of same faction < 10yards, automatic buff of "Safety in Numbers"
when near 3 or more players of opposite faction < 10yards, automatic buff of "Death or Glory"
I realize that most of the people who read this are experienced PvPers who would view this as common sense. I post this in the hopes that Fed new to PvP reads it and has an easier time learning the ropes.
You know I can see some wisdom in capture the flag maps for why a Fed ball is bad. In straight up scrap maps Fed balls equal survival. If cloaked BoPs want to coordinate an attack on a Fed ball they have to drop cloak, and if they drop cloak on a Fed ball that actually supports itself, (these are rare but they do happen), the Klinks have trouble.
These are the Fed PUG rules I have for myself. The idea is to simulate a team when no team readily forms. This is often the case in Fed Pick Up Groups.
On scrap maps, if you are not gonna wait for all your partners to get popped then go back to the place you died that is where your Fed ball most likely still is. It is the better part of wisdom to bring a fresh Fed ball to the fray than to get to an existent fur ball only to find your teammates popped right after you get back. Problem is most of the scrap maps I have been on have multiple spawn points so it can be a challenge to reform your Fed ball. The longer it takes to reengage your opposing force they more time they have to repair hulls and regenerate their shields.
Do your best to shoot, move and communicate. Concentrate fire on the same target FTW. Call targets. If a target is called by someone else make a point to shoot it too. Most of the time the action will be too hot to type. In those moments look for what others are shooting and shoot it too. If you get to a fur ball late pick a target that someone else is already slugging. Look for the OpForce that is in the worst shape and KO it fast.
Even within a Fed ball, to always have a wing man is a good tactic. Try to watch out for your wing as you watch for yourself. Always have a support skill ready for your wing. If you are in a multi-ship map and no team is formed, start it yourself. Wing men can be improvised. Try to be aware of the tactical value of the ships on your side if a team fails to form, pick the ship that has the best chance of supporting you and stick close to that ship and support it as if it is your wing man. If you are lucky they will reciprocate. If they fail to return the favor find a new wing. Two out of three is evidence of a pattern, if your improvised wing man fails to support you twice in a row look for a new improvised wing man.
Most important rule for getting good at PvP is to SHOW UP! You will never learn PvP if you just PvE. The AI in this game is an oxymoron, there is nothing intelligent about it. It will give you a false sense of superiority that will crush your self esteem the moment you step into a PvP map and get ganked. I sure happened to me. LOL
Getting ganked is never bad if you learn something from it. The best Klingon players want as close a match as possible. Good sports will share tips as it will improve their chances for better matches in the future. For this reason do hang for a moment after a match, compliment your opponents and ask them if they are willing to give you tips. You may be surprised by how gracious a good victor is inclined to be.
This thread stated in the feedback for Cryptic area. Some Mod moved it. The point of all of this is to have Cryptic make some missions that teach what is needed in PVP. Even if they made a few missions tougher at the later stages. Anything that would help train the players for what is to come.

just saying.

1. Log in.
2. Queue up.
3. Wait.
4. Wait more.
5. Get bored.
6. Start a mission instead.
7. Queue pops...
8. Abandon queue.

Yeah, wait at the respawn point for the cloaked klingons to come and get you
This is good advice. Unfortunately by the time a fed knows that there are three or more klingons there he is already visible to them anyway.
Umm, don't go where the klink ball is at?
Go to any flag other than the one you was killed at. Go above or below the cracked planet.
who cares what they know. Its what you know that counts. Just do not go into a Klink ball.
Unfortunately, I find that my requests for the Klingons to decloak so that I may avoid them fall on deaf ears.

On a side note:
XD
fed ball of victims
fed ball of snakes

Do your homework. It is not so important to join a great PvP fleet. Instead read the forums look of the entries that will make a difference in your chance to win. Forum threads like http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=113118, http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=115814, http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=150840&highlight=aka+IWIN (This one should be stickied) are chock full of win. Joining a Strong PvP fleet is good advice though as it will open the door for VOIP like Vent. VOIP will improve your in match communication which will increase your chances for a win.
