Buggy Hardware

Hi,

I currently haven't purchased the game yet and I wonder if I could get some advice. I have some pretty buggy hardware that works well with some games and crashes for others (unfortunately, usually online games) Are there any games that use a similar engine to STO that offer a trial version that I could test? I'm a bit hesitant to purchase the game if it may not work with my system.

I should have no trouble running based purely on the specs but as I said, certain games hate my computer. Eveonline is playable but crashes my video card randomly, WoW is unplayable due to it kicking me off the internet, Counterstrike is completely unplayable, but Empire total war works fine...

Just looking for advice. Should I wait for STO to provide a free trial?

Thanks,
Spider

there is a demo available . Also if you post your dxdaig report on your system and the type of connection you have , nic/modem/router (wire or wireless) and the isp someone might give advice on your success in the game.

I may try the demo. Do you have to download the file seperately, or does it work with the main STO download? Would like to avoid another 8Gig download if possible. :D

Anyway, here is my dxdiag- http://pastebin.com/XArA2cRK

I'm using wireless on a cable ISP. I know its not ideal to have wireless, but its all I can do at the moment.

the demo and the main game the same except the demo will (or should) have you link to the demo activation page to activate your account as a demo.

    http://www.startrekonline.com/user/free_demo_start/Cryptic

you graphic card is a little weak you will have to start out in safe mode (in the launcher option) then add features to see what you can play with.

Also This game required a strong network connections. You may have problems with using a wireless connections. some modems /router can not handle the amount of connections and small packet streaming the game does.
The game uses ports 80 443 and 7000-7500 so thes ports need to be open and unfiltered.
download and run nettest to test a sample of the ports
    Nettest:
    Go to http://files.champions-online.com/nettest.exe
Download this file and run it
A command prompt should appear running the test automatically

For good connections, column 1 and 3 have values around 500 kb/sec (outgoing/incoming), column 2 has values around 20 kb/sec (transfer rate).

also the launcher uses MSHTML so if there a problem with IE it will affect the launcher so besure itis not set to be offline and is uptodate.
