I recently bought the game (2 months ago) and played it on my old computer a VAIO with a basic graphics card (intel family chipset), the game runs with some lag, but it runs anyway. And now I have bought a new laptop to use at my office, problem is that, I cant install the game on the new one. How can I install it for me to play with one computer at home and another in my free time at work?? Is there an option to do that??Does this means that should my old lap just go to little lapheaven it would take the game with it and i cant install it on another computer??.. Im ALL ears to anyone who has a solution to this problem...
PS It really strikes me as odd that this is the first time something like this has happened to me in with an MMO, I have played WOW, EVE and SWG, and this is the first time something akward like this happens.
Your retail key is assigned to you account, You can install the game on as many PC you want. When the screen pops up that asked to register the key just close the window to continue to install.
While you can install as many times as you want. Only one PC can login and play at a time.

Try downloading the client and installing it from the Star Trek Online web site. There could be several different reasons you are experiencing issue with installing the game.
I'm not kidding. I've installed it on a plethora of different machines... only downloaded it once.
This is assuming you have enough technical know how to either put it on a removable media (external HD, 16gb thumb drive), and can drag and drop. Or, you know how to network two computers together.

Im no computer whiz, i know the simple procedure or copy/paste, the way I did it with Star Wars Galaxies when changing it to the new laptop?? I installed the original CD on the computer then just went directly to the program files directory copied the whole folder from the old computer, and pasted it in the corresponding installed folder on the new one, then ran the Galaxies Launchpad and ran scan.. the Launchpad did the appropiate patching and I was playing Galaxies in no time (the whole operation didnt take me more than 25 minutes for a 8 GB transfer/scan/patch). Cant repeat the same procedure with STO, at the end I get a "Version mismatch" message and the game doesnt run, meaning I gotta wait the whole 6 hours patching to the original CD installation and hope for the best? C'mon, there's gotta be a faster way.. those are 6 hours of... playtime.. I could rank 2 levels in 6 hours.. get some 15 exploration points, one honor point, etc.. Any ideas? HELP ME SENIOR MEMBERS!! UR MY ONLY HOPE..:D
Actually you should be able to
do the intial install so all the register setting are set . then just copy the /live/piggs folder over to the new pc /live/piggs folder from the fully patched old pc.
Not sure how else to help you. I've "installed" it on 5 different PCs like this.
Sorry dacatchman, wrong link bro, It takes me to a completely different thread. Tried it ur way PegasusMD and now I dont get the "Version mismatch message", I get the small little window "Trying to update the launcher. Please be patient, after a while a pop up appears with a huge red X, and says "A file was locked that could not be opened for writing". Any other suggestions??
To everyone recommending just copying the game files around, you are incorrect and please stop advising people to do this. The installer does more than just throw files on the system, it also (as is relevant in this case) resets permissions on the install folder so the update system can work.

Add: Now this is just great.. I Install the game from the original CD, launch it (without having the copy/paste procedure of the live/piggs folder and i get the same message "Patcher error: A file was locked that could not be opened for writing"... Does this mean Im gonna have to download the game from the client server and THEN repatch??? that's 2 full days lost of gaming.. Unacceptable.

This is a permissions issue. Make sure you are running the launcher with administrator privileges.
If you running windows 7 or vista do the following:
Run as Administrator
Running an application as an administrator is required for many applications to ensure that it is run with the proper permissions for Windows. Even if your user account has administrative privileges this does not always mean that the application is being granted the proper access. This is typically needed when running applications on systems where there are multiple user accounts or when attempting to run older games.
Steps for running as administrator
1. For Patching Problems: Right-click the icon for the game.
2. For Installation Problems: Right-click the setup.exe icon.
3. Select the "Run as admin" option.

I guess some of us know how to use that thar computer
Hello guys, final solution was transferring the biggs folder to the new directory and executing the STO launch icon as administrator, a bit more troublesome compared to SWG, but it should save nearly to 9 hours downloading time for those players who wanna change to computers with better graphics (as in my case). I take back everything I say about the lag issues I previously had with the game (the problem was my old computer). The game now runs smoothly and the graphics are AMAZING I just fell in love with the game again. I owe u all a bottle of Tranya, dont be affraid to look me up inside the game. Urs truly. ChichenItza

Same issue. Should I "X" out of the "code" page of the internet?

The above is a great way to corrupt your system registry as well. I don't recommend it. Even if you get it to work, any saved data will be created in an unsigned registry entry which is very hard to automatically delete from the registry if you don't know what you're doing.
In addition, bulky, unoptimized registries can cause your PC to lag, be slow to boot up/log off, programs to misbehave erratically, and can cause all kinds of other cool errors. You're always best just installing unless you know how to edit your registry manually.

Not sure what you are talking about, but we certainly don't create "signed entries" in the installer :-P Making an ew reg key is the same no matter how you do it.

Fiddling with the registry is a *very bad idea* unless you know what you're doing. Even creating a new key (which seems innocent enough) can cause problems if something else tries to interact with it.
If you *are* going to change your registry entries, *back it up first*, to secure media such as a flash drive or a CD. That way, if you hose your system by tinkering, you can fix it without hassle.
The registry isn't black magic as many seem to believe. It is basically just a virtual file system that stored configuration values instead of normal files. Replacing the file "C:\Windows\system32\user32.dll" is dangerous, but you can do whatever you want with our own files until the cows come home. Ditto in the registry, changing random core Windows entries is probably inadvisable if you don't know what they do, but Cryptic's are pretty simple and you can poke them without sacrificing a goat first.

Total agreement! ... The registry is techno-voodoo.
