Ok I never played the game, so I am not sure if it will make for a good movie. This is what coming soon had to say about the topic:

Legendary Pictures has just announced that it plans to develop Electronic Arts and Bioware's popular video game series Mass Effect into a feature film:

Electronic Arts Inc. today announced that Legendary Pictures, whose successful co-productions include The Dark Knight, 300, Clash of the Titans, The Hangover and Watchmen, has acquired theatrical feature film rights to the hit videogame franchise, Mass Effect. The project will also fall under Legendary's co-production and co-financing agreement with Warner Bros., who will distribute the film worldwide. The producers are in discussions with Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, Thor) to draft a screenplay based on the epic science fiction game series. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce the film with Avi and Ari Arad. BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk will serve as executive producers, as will Mass Effect executive producer Casey Hudson.

I am all for scifi films, as long as it's done right. Meaning it doesn't suck. lol

I think that just killed it there.

Honestly, with regards to In The Name of the King, the movie was ok, but what killed it for me was the score. Gawd, who ever did the score has no sense of what music to put where. Had the music been different and improved, say, by Hans Zimmer or James Horner, or even Danny Elfman, then the movie would have improved itself by 100%.

    Moral of the story:
    The score does matter kiddies.

mass effect has a great story and if it was done right (like a star trek film or like avatar) then it could be amazing, but computer games dont always get made into great films so i wont hold my breath.
one of the problems is that the game plays very much like a movie so im not sure who they could better it.

i think it would translate much better into a ongoing tv series set in the same universe just with a new stories.

Get a decent screenplay first then find a director!

but Peter Jackson could potentially do it justice :)

You guys need to go outside the box:
    Duncan Jones (wrote/directed Moon)

    Runners-up:
Ridley Scott (directed Alien, Blade Runner)
Danny Boyle (directed Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Sunshine)

I don't think it's a good idea. Everyone has a different idea of who Sheppard is, or who he should be. We all made different choices that changed the story dramatically and without that ability to chose Mass Effect loses so much in the transition. And it gets right down to the simplest of things, like if it went into ME2 and Sheppard ended up with a girl it'd more than likely be Miranda just because the character meets the more socially accepted definition of attractive, as opposed to say Jack and her deep story line or Tali because she's an alien (yes I am aware she was in the first as well)

This is one of the few franchises that at least to me really should be left in the gaming world and never make the leap.

Hell I used to think Halo would make an awesome movie but every new short and every new game blows apart cannon so bad that I don't even wanna look at what it's become. I'd hate to see Mass Effect take that same route.

Mass Effect is one of the few video games that could be made in a good movie. It's not all that different for Battlestar Galactica (which IMO was a good movie) with folding guns.

But that said will it be good? probably not.

This. I believe this is a waste of time, Mass Effect doesn't really have a true storyline even lol...this movie will prob kill the game. Oh well.

Halo WAS going to be made into a movie a few years ago then the team bailed.

BUT a few mini-episodes were created from the guys who were going to make it online. just go to youtube and type in: Halo Arms Race (there should be 3 vids). The videos are sick. And now the only thing close to a movie are the live-action trailers for Halo games (like ODST's multiple trailers).

I know of them, the ODST ones being my favorites... the one for Reach murdered cannon by showing them as Spartan 3's... none existed at that time on Reach... not going to argue Halo cannon, but a long story short I am tired of movies and outside media killing a games story in the interest of money or ease of production.

But at least you agree... I think?

How about they just let Bioware make a cgi movie.

Like why ruin a winning concept?

Well if you had played the game you'd know it already is a great movie where you are the star. I'm not sure how I feel about an actual film though. Once you remove player choices from the story it could get pretty bland. And of course it won't be my Commander Shepard that's the star.

I also worry that having a movie franchise might mean they dumb down ME3 with movie sequels in mind.

Well to be fair BioWear is not Square Enix, very different writing style and philosophy. Personally I think it'd turn out a great deal better than Spirit's Within... or that dismal Resident Evil abomination I watched out of boredom.

Also, with respect. Chat is a Good Lady, not a Good Sir. Be mindful, she may whip cookies at you.

Edit: NM, she got it before I did.

Why does this keep happening to me... *has Family Guy style flashback to Picard killing him.*

what? of course it does. they'll have to make some modification to make it fit into a film but how in any way does it not have a storyline?

I am cautiously optimistc about this, it could be good. The Mass Effect universe is certainly interesting and rich.

It's not really that hard to come with a movie plot. It won't be the same as the game plot. It won't be my Shepard. But that's not a big problem. It doesn't have to be quite the same continuity.

    My Mass Effect Movie Plot:
    Act 1:
Shepard joins a mission on human colony that has come under attack. His mentor/superior (whatshisname) is betrayed and killed. He discovers that alien device, gets this strange memories from the Prometheans.
Act 2: Shepard is informed of an expert on Prometheans, a hot Asari. He meats, saves her from the Geth and the traitor Sarin, and they exchange information.
Act 3: They follow their leads to a Promethean world. There they learn the truth about the Reapers, and end up in the Citadel just as it is under attack by the Reaper. They kill Sarin and destroy the Reaper.

That's the story of ME 1 condensed to the "essentials" for the most part. Several side plots and interesting missions ignored, of course, and probably condensed to a smaller core of characters, since they can't introduce them well if they focus on the main storyline around the Reaper.

Mass Effect 2 is basically the Magnificent Seven or similar "team-building" movies already, so you just have to cut the loyality mission stuff and integrate it in the "meet a team member" where necessary.

Of course, if they really want to milk it, they can create a triology for each game. ;)

That game is already dead b/c of this...it'll only take time for people to realize it; if a movie is made :p

I meant a ligit 1 way story, seeing that we could make the choice we do not have 100% true story; we only have multiple outcomes.

No, there will be a Cannon version of Shepard.

Like in Knights of the Old Republic, Revan is male and a light sider in the Cannon.
