I was playing this afternoon after having watched a couple episodes of TNG when it suddenly struck me...
I can't hear anything.
Where's the "Red Alert!" "Shields up" "Firing photons, full spread" etc?
Sure we have the odd "shields down" and "hull integrity" warnings from the computer, but what about our Boffs?
In the future I'd like to be able to select from voice packs for each of my boffs and have them talk during combat. Being able to pick from a series of voice-acting options would allow us to imprint on our Boffs some more personality beyond their costumes and would add some life to the space combat.
So my Bolian science officer would pipe up on occassion with a "Captain, enemy ship decloaking!"
My Bajoran tactical officer could respond to my order to fire HYTII with a "Torpedo salvo loaded Captain", or a "Beam array fully charged Captain" when I order a Beam Overload.
"Initiating Tyken's rift"
"Engaging tractor beam"
"Diverting emergency power to shields!"
"Hull breach! Engineering teams to damage control!"
"Cannons charged for burst fire"
For me if would add some depth... rather than simply controlling what amounts to a really solid cinematic battle, I would also be able to hear the activity on the bridge... a big step towards that Star Trek feel.
Actually this was already in the game at one point in beta - however many of the voices sounded err... 'bad' to say the least.
They have said they have interest in trying to get them back in however.
I will note though that I want the option to NOT have voices. I think it would drive me up the wall listening to my BOs chattering non-stop. (And no, I don't want to just turn the sound off.)
Excellent idea Gildred. I need more voices in my head! Seriously, I agree, please Cryptic, when you get a chance, add in more "Red Alert!" "Firing photons, full spread", "Hull breach! Engineering teams to damage control!", and the like. Albiet, as the mistformsquirrel points out, this should be a optional feature.
But speaking of features, I remember an options box in menu about the voice messages... I can't recall atm exactly what it was called... The feature was set to default, but another option was for more messages (something like "supply more hints"), so I selected that... near as I can figure this only added to ground messages, in that when an enemy is close by the Majel Roddenberry impersonator Computer says something about prepare for close combat. (Could I be any more vague in this last paragraph? When I get home tonight I'll clean it up...)
Edit: Ok, found what I was talking about... If you go to Options > HUD > Combat Audio Notifications. You can choose between Off, Standard (Default), and Suggestions. The latter is what I'm referring to above that gives you a few extra Computer Voice Overs.
Whatever they do i hope they do it right, the "we're under attack" bit already annoys the heck out of me since most of the time i'm the one doing the attacking. I feel like i'm in an episode of Southpark with someone screaming "IT'S COMING RIGHT FOR US!" before they blow away an unwitting innocent animal.
OK - WOW. Apparently when I originally set the Options > HUD > Combat Audio Notifications > Suggestions I was on the ground and didn't realize there were different region settings. Tonight I changed mine in Space. Computer is yakkity and has a lot to say while fighting Borg in Kerrat. LOL
It's cool and makes me laugh now, but I can bet I'll shut it off eventually.
yeah, they had voices as late as Open beta, but they were removed because of some compatibility issue or something. You could even choose from about a dozen voices for each BO, and I do seem to remember there being a "none" option too.
I agree with thread starter, this would be wonderful!
Moreover, I think many players would like to be able to not only hear your bridge officer talk, but to issue voice commands as well! Think how wonderful would that be: "Full Impulse!" - you say. "Aye, sir, engaging full impulse." - responds helmsman. This would be so great!
And, as far as i know, this voice recognition system would be not so hard to develop - they did it in Tom Clansy's HAWX, for example. It was fantastic.
I keep using the Game Commander 2, which is a pretty old, but rather nice voice command application. In that app, you can add 2 custom feedback sounds to each commands. One is played before action and one after the action stops. I made "Hard port" command which makes a constant turn until I order to stop. The order feeds back a "Entering coordinates" sound from Star Trek Armada 1. When I order to stop the turn it play the "That's affirmative" wav.
Anyway, Star Trek Armada 1 has like 1000 sound clips which can be used in game with application.

But if the Klingon voices stay at these horrible voice where comes directly from hell, pls dont integrate it for the Klingons pls.
