Purple gear=very rare loot?

Purple gear is by far not very rare. It can be gotten easily by doing dailies or raidisodes, except for the reward purple loot at the end of a raidisode. It's not loot at all when i can purchase it.
Blue, yes, that's indeed rare but not as powerful as purple "loot".
If the Devs would rename the very rare purple loot to something like "special gear" it would allow them to implement true very rare lootable items.
If the only way to obtain those is playing on advanced/elite mode, i'd actually think about playing on those modes.
I'd even ask people to join me on those challenging missions, this would

You're looking at it the wrong way.

You can only acquire the items you are talking about at Rear Admiral 3 and above.

How rare is a purple item at Lieutenant Rank?

Well, leveling in STO or any MMO is a new story. I for one didn't take the leveling period seriously.
It was a grind done by quests and explorations and way too easy. Leveling is a matter of weeks when you are slow for whatever reason. But being an endgamer is a matter of years. So endgame content is all that counts for me and many, many others. We are the ones Cryptic needs to keep. Levelers keep playing as long as they get to see something new. When it gets repetetive they quit. I've seen so many people come and go.

That's still missing my point. You claim the items are not very rare. But they are.

You can not get them the same way at any other level. They are very rare. They are so rare they do not even exist at Lt. levels.

When you average out the ease at which you attain them at RA5 against the fact that they do not exist at all in the first tier of gameplay ... you begin to see that overall these items are very rare.

And so they live up to their description.

What, I am sorry but that is silly. The loot offered for sale by doing dailies is the same loot dropping in the so called raids. That is very stupid design. What keeps hard core people playing is the challenge and also the loot drops. Somehow they lost sight of the fact that you need a risk verses reward system or it is not worth doing over ad over.

The OP is certainly valid. Everyone and their mothers have the same "very rare" equipment at RA5. This game needs something to keep people playing at that level. Other games keep people playing by giving them some sort of a carrot to chase after, usually in the form of better gear. When the best stuff can be bought from an NPC vendor, rather than player crafted or as raid rewards, the carrot is free for everyone!

We need better craftable gear and better "very rare" loot that can only be aquired as mission rewards. I would like a carrot please.

That's just been changed on Tribble. There is a new stat bonus ... [DMG} which boosts base weapon damage ... that is not available through any of the badges/marks/whatevers. And is only a drop. This will hedge some players towards wanting to equip a Very Rare weapon with [DMG] X 3 modifier on it ... and that can only be acquired through loot drop.

As stated, this is a non-issue.

People need something to work on. In case you give us "black loot" or something, that only offers its usefulness when used as a whole set, people would have a reason to team up or even try solo to get their gear complete. This would give us many, many hours of fun playing this game. It should take a while though to get a full set of items, many MMOs offer such a system and people like it.
Too many people just log on to do their dailies on normal difficulty and then log off. This would change dramatically, i am certain about that. if you looted the wrong damage type you could offer it to your teammembers or put it on the exchange. Trading would become much more interesting.

See high lighted line: It would be no more fun then it currently is. In fact, it would be more frustrating because instead of slogging through the same content over and over again for one hour, and getting something at least, I may slog through it for DAYS and not get a single drop I need. I'd rather they add content that is fun, then another e-peen measurement that tests your ability to shove a rail road spike in your head and convince yourself that doing the same 5 missions over and over again is fun.

What is fun about doing now? At least if there were some sort of reward for running the STFs they would have a semblance of a reason to run over and over again. Now its just ramming the rail spike in your head just for the sake of doing it.

See above post ... new stat for weapons ... [DMG] ... now there is loot to chase. [DMG] X 3 purple weapons. They will do more base damage than any other weapon of that type. And burst damage is being reigned in with that same patch. Making the stat have an even bigger impact.

No, it is, one hour a day to get the marks to get the gear so I can go back to the one fun thing left in the game... PvP.... oh wait nevermind....

The point is that if I HAVE to do something to stay competitive in PvP/STFs I'd rather have a guaranteed return so that I can go, "Ok, one hour of suffering for 3 weeks, then I will have all of the gear I need. Then I can just log on for Fleet Events, STF runs with Fleet, and Fleet PvP...." because really, there is nothing else to do.

The system being proposed here means in order to do the same as I do now, I HAVE to spend hours upon hours working for a stupid carrot, that if I decide when I finally get it, that the theorized build was not as attractive or fun as I thought... then oh no, back to grinding away boring repeated content for god knows how long until the luck fairy takes mercy on me.

A quote from another post I made on another forum, in a Fleet/Guild recruitment thread, it captures my thought for gaming perfectly:
Our Primary Goal is to have fun

Our focus as a guild is to have fun. That is what we play games for, right? ...

PvP I can understand. I have no problem with earning purple rewards for competing in PvP. I do think you should only get the reward if you win.

It is the competitive in STFs part I don't get, I just don't see the point. There is no reward. I've run them once to see the stories. To me they are already not fun, so why would I bother to do them if I get nothing out of them?

See, what I am bloody saying is TRIBBLE the rewards, make the bloody things fun. Then they would not need super duper special items of e-peen awesomeness, people would WANT to run the bloody things.

Sounds good to me, I've never seen it in an MMO though. Even if they were fun, they'd only be fun the first few times through. Eventually they'll get old and the only way people will continue to play them is to give them a reward for doing so.

To me Purple is Rare. Very Rare would be specific items such as the special engines from the Gatway mission. I think the game needs more "very rare" items like that.

You don't have to do anything. Are you really so handicapped in PvP that a +10 or +15 to any skill is going to make or break most of your matches? I know people who were PvPing in T4 cruisers at RA5 - and winning. As long as Cryptic doesn't create imbalanced items (and I doubt they would since they can't even seem to handle a console with a +30 bonus on it), having raids and fleet actions drop items slightly better than what's available in stores makes a lot of sense. It gives people a reason to group / fleet up and do these things.
