The New Orleans class (
Mem. Alpha) was, to me, one of the most attractive of Starfleet's frigates. More importantly, according to Memory alpha, it was the only pure-frigate class.
Hardly a huge elephant, but hardly a Akira either, i.e. nicely middle-sized, in my opinion.
Side, End, front, Top, and Bottom views show the class off from most angles.
What's even more distinctive is the 3 pods, their use is entirely left to the imagination.
Apart from the "X ship was better" comments, wouldn't you like to see it ingame?
Comments
T3 Escort would be a good place for it, though, size-wise. Can't make all the new ships cruisers.
If it weren't for S/FX teams taking photos of those models, we'd probably be left with the Sasquatch photo.
It's a nice design, I can see it eventually happening. However, it seems fairly low from all the pet ship thread I've seen.
The pod concept the New Orleans has would be a great alternative for STO though (also usable with Nebula and Springfield.) Different pods could be configured to allow the ship to operate as a cruiser, escort, or science ship.
The most common aspect would be the design of the warp nacelles - general shape and form. Other aspects might be the "flow" of the design - is it detailed, with lots of corners or with lots of curves.
- A Heavy Cruiser variant. This comes with saucher, engineering hull housing the deflector and 2 warp nacelles on Pylons. The Enterprises except the NX-01 all have been this. The proposed NX-01 refit would basically upgrade it to a cruiser.
- A Light Cruiser variant.Instead, This comes with the saucer, but only with a very small Engineering Hull. it comes with a small top module that can be exchanged. Engines are attached to the small Engineering Hull. Miranda and Nebula belong in this class.
- A (Light) Frigate variant.
You get the saucer and two warp engines, and the deflector is integrated in the saucer. This is basically what the NX-01 and Akira classes look like.
- A Destroyer / (Heavy) Frigate variant. This is very close to the Light Frigate, but it comes with 4 nacelles. Picard's Stargazer is an example of this, and so might be the Prometheus. It's in many ways a direct upgrade of the Light Frigate. (And might be in fact actually that. Make the ship more powerful and faster by adding a larger warp core and 2 extra nacelles.)
- An Escort variant.
This is a highly compact version, a Saucer with Engines attached. The deflector array is integrated in the saucer. Over the eras, the design gets more and more compact, eventually leading to integrating the engines inside the saucer (which isn't really a saucer anymore) and engineering and saucer becoming one. This would be the Defiant.
I imagine the first Escort might have been created in the Kirk era, and basically be a saucer with two warp nacelles attached to the sides. Looks a little clumsy, but it was the cheapest and fastest to build for fighting along the Klingon border before the Organian Peace Treaty.
Alternatively, this could have been very experimental designs, with no common elements, including single-nacelle variants and similar odd designs.
There might also be a medium variant of some of these. The Intrepid seems to be more a Cruiser design, since it has the elements saucer, engineering with deflector, and 2 nacelles. Or it's just another "era" or generation of ships. (after all, it was one of the first to use Bioneural Gelpacks and Medical Emergency Holograms)
Ship Generations would be
- NX-01 Generation
- Enterprise NCC 1701 Generation
- Enterprise A NCC 1701-A (Refit) Generation
- Excelsior Generation
- Ambassador Generation
- Enterprise D Generation
- Intrepid Generation
- Enterprise E Generation
Not all generations might have been "full" generations, e.g. there are examples for its design for all ship types. Escorts might have been very rare, for example. The Intrepid might never have gotten Frigate variants.
However like someone else said Im all for it. More variation is always good.
Also taste is personal so someone might thinkt its pretty and why should my taste stop them from flying one ??? Easy answer, it shouldn't.
Go for it. Make it so.
esp since my bop drops your shields instantly with a maxed out overloaded beam and has 4 high yield torps incoming anyway, might as well see you die in the most beautifull manner possible yes?
I have to agree; in fact, all the "Yeti" ships should be a rather low priority.
Ironically, Nebula was also a throwaway kitbash created for Wolf 359. Throw it out with the bathwater too?
By "yeti ships," I meant ships that we never saw a clear picture of on screen. The Nebula may have evolved from a kitbashed version that was only seen in distance shots (and as a model in Sisko's office
However, my comment would ultimately refer to later ships, like the Norway and Steamrunner, as well.
If the Cryptic modelling team would be quadruppled, then I´d consider this thing should be built for the cryptic store.
As of now. Pass.
See the star ship poll winners for what should be next.
Right, but we have very clear images of all the physical models of these ships outside of their various episodes/movies, so I'd go as far as to say these are much less "yeti ships" than say, Enterprise-J. Steamrunner was also in a number of Dominion War episodes, so I don't think it even fits your criteria.
You mean this carppy thing?
