Only 400 points? That seems really low considering all the work done on them. I'd be suprised if it cost under $10 in C-points, probably more, not that I have a problem paying that amount for them :p

    Oh, for pete's sake.

The monthly fee you pay every month is for the continued development of this game. Many MMOs offer content updates between expansions without requiring the user to pay any additional fees beyond the monthly subscription costs. Others forgo the monthly fee and use a C-store type model instead - the key word there being "instead". Very few MMOs demand both, although Cryptic certainly seems comfortable doing so.

Cryptic made this situation necessary themselves. They released an MMO with minimal development time and minimal features. They know they need to build upon what they have (and quickly) if this product is to survive, because very few people would stick with this game for long if the development stagnated. But the limited amount of subscribers they have (which is a direct result of their rushed development schedule) apparently doesn't create enough revenue to justify the size of their team. And yet, they need every person on their team in order to churn out the much needed additional content at an acceptable pace. What to do?

They offset a portion of the development costs by charging us additional fees through the C-store. That allows them to collect, say, $20 a month (or more) from players instead of $15. They are passing the buck for a problem they themselves created. Sadly, since this method seems to be working out for them, they'll probably continue putting out MMOs with minimal development time because they're seeing that players are crazy enough to start paying fees for a game even if it's only halfway finished compared to other MMOs at launch. Sure, they may never recover the subscriber base they could have had if they had gone with a longer term investment, but they seem to be ok with that as long as they're making some sort of profit.

And you can bet other MMO developers are noticing that too. This isn't about being able to afford to pay additional fees (although, for some people I'm sure it is and that's certainly understandable). It's about the bar being lowered on quality and service to the point where it's smacking you in the head, and yet you're standing there saying "hit me more, please". Sadly, we all are. If this weren't Star Trek I would have been gone with the first C-Store item. Note I don't subscribe to Champions Online despite having been a big Champions PnP fan during my days, and having subscribed to the City of Heroes series for too many years to count.

Oh boy no! Caitians are announced (again) but vital element missing!
As this i nowhere in the engineering report I fear the worst.

Devs urgent reminder: as soon as Caitians are implemented we desperately need a new item. I can't stress the importance enough, already the french revolution taught us the usefulness of it: a Guillotine!
With all the lunatic furri.. err loyal caitian fans flooding the planets, starbases and starships all sane... err normal/conventional starfleet and KDF personel will need efficient means to get rid of them.

The Guillotines can come in all versions, be it phaser-, disruptor-, tetryon- or antiproton guillotines etc.
They also fit well with the common uncommon, rare and very rare categorization. The additional effects found on the rare versions could for example be 'faster execution rate', 'increased bloodspill', 'augmented pain infliction' and so on.

On somewhat the same line: new accolates should be introduced. Of course the normal 'Kill 1000/10K/100k/10 mil Caitians' but also something along the lines of 'Find 10/50/100/1000 unique ways of killing a Caitian'.
These accolates should go along with corresponding title-unlocks such as 'Waste disposal agent', 'Galaxy cleaner', 'Federation/KDF purity preserver', 'Creative Vermin Exterminator' and so on and so forth.

Considering that certainly pretty much the entire playersbase will want these important, inevitable and generally absolutely necessary additions I suppose we should create a couple of seperate threads about it, one per day at the very least. You know like the fans of that one special and insignificant furball race, what was the name again...

    And *face palm*

I'd still pay $20 to play a Caitian. Of course that would be the last C-store thing I bought for the next year probably :p

I saw them in a game build this week - you guys are going to be very happy furballs when they get released

I will be when they are available as BOff's. On the Engineering Report, it was indicated that while that might happen eventually, it wasn't happing yet. I hope that changes soon. They do look great though, and I'm sure I will eventually play one.

The caitans look too far on the animalish scale... can't really relate to them and kinda ugly, I haven't seen that animated series (don't think it was shown in UK) but I saw the pictures people posted before and they looked cooler in that.

It's like they tried to replicate the low budget TV series where it looked like they had just stuck silly plasticine and random fake fur all over making it look ugly as possible because they couldn't do it well enough to hide that it was a human otherwise, just the easy way out.

You're right, though, that they're based off the ones in the films.

Here, have a cotton ball to play with while i prepare the airlo.. err a bit of milk for you kitty.

Don't we just love to TRIBBLE with them, watching how they go all mental when somebody doesn't jump on their "we be furry cats, we love walking carpets and everyone has to join us!" bandwagon and, oh great-fur-rug forbid, even dislike the startrek-wookies.

And in that spirit: keep the anti-caitian movent growing guys, we have to rid the universe of that pest. Everyone get their free flamethrower at starbase 1, load up the phaser-guillotines and join the hunt!
The officer with the most cruel caitian slaughter holopicture will be issued a latinum-plated guillotine!

I am incredibly happy about the presence of the playable tribble race. I mean hey what would WoW have been without gnomes, without the constant sacrifice, killing, slaughtering and generally abusing of gnomes... man would we have missed out on a lot of pure genuine fun.

STO's fun factor is definitely on the rise with this introduction of caitian plucking, -torching and airlock-throwing etc.

Bah people cant find the humor in anything anymore.

Like for example, this entire topic...and the caitian debates in general have led me to create the face palm drinking game.

Its simple, select a drink of choice and each time you come to a post where the only reply is /face palm. you take a shot.

In my games I take two shots if its from Ashki.

    Bottoms up everyone :P

The Caitians are a fascinating, fun species. And one that is quite visually striking as well! A personal favorite of mine.

That being said, Caitians will not be in for launch. And while this is not any sort of announcement, Caitians are on the short list of species to introduce in the future. I want to be sure that when we introduce them into STO, we do it the right way so everyone is pleased.

    ....may be sold....

    kitties.... in space.....???

p.s I think the idea is awesome coz it is, not a damn "furry" lol :p I honestly don't think you need to be to think it would be cool? I mean we have a tonne of other aliens and stuff does that mean some people are "vulcany" or whatever? lol
...as long as they didn't look like TRIBBLE like the "feline" faces in city of heroes... those were horrible and just had the uncanny valley effect of not looking quite human or quite animal, just wrong and ugly.

but just think of the possibilities claw attacks and extra senses and somersaulting :) like the matrix with lasers ;) i haven't actually played yet still downloading demo/beta so I'm hoping the actiony bits are actually actiony unlike most online roleplaying games which are just too clicky/"power" centric rather than actual fluid movement and action

I think they should play like Bloodrayne if anyone's played that game where you can jump around on everything, swing up bars, climb pipes, walk wires etc

It's a shammmme that they didn't at least give an option to have Caitian that is half human or whatever because the uncanny valley effect of not looking quite human or quite animal, just wrong and ugly, is baddd. :(

Also, has anyone noticed that City of Heroes released a 'furry pack' and that DC universe online has more furry face options than human? terrible. Why do companies cater so much for furries yet not even let you put cat ears on a mask and have an outfit that looks properly sci-fi shiny? :p
