Hi all! I've submitted help tickets twice about this issue but nothing seems to be solving it, so, I decided to see if you fine folk on the forums can help me out. This is the first problem I've had with STO so this is far from a rant, but, as I'm sure you can imagine, I'd love to get back to playing!
I took a bit of a break from the game while my exams were approaching, to stop myself from wasting time when I should be studying. I didn't come back to the game until I got back from school. This means that I am on a different connection and ISP now, but as far as I'm aware, the security settings of my new network are less severe than the old ones. Anyway, on to the problem!
Whenever I try and patch the game - that is, I load the launcher, put in my user name and password, hit the connect button - before the download has ever reached 2%, I get an error message saying that the connection to the server has been lost. Error 14, I think it is. On top of that, when it happens, it seems that my entire connection times out. MSN, skype, and my internet browser all become temporarily disconnected whenever I receive this error message in the launcher. Whether I let it reconnect, or close and reopen the launcher, it always happens the same way.
So, that's my problem, here is what I'm running:
Windows XP home edition
My ISP is packetworks, on a Belkin wireless router.
I use a linksys external wireless adapter to connect to my network.
I bought, downloaded, and run my game through Steam.
Here is everything I have tried so far to fix it, both at the suggestions given from help tickets, and of my own initiative:
Patching via proxy (both US and EU)
Closing all programs currently running before starting the game.
Restarting my computer.
Restarting my modem and router.
Deleting all local game content, downloading and installing again.
At this point I would like to note that my security has not increased since I last played successfully, however, I also:
Ensured that all firewalls were turned off.
Ensured that all local antivirus and spyware programs have been turned off.
Ensured that STO was noted as a program exception in my firewalls.
Put my IP address into my browser and made sure that my network security is turned off from the router administrator menu.
Put my computer specific IP address into my network's DMZ, putting it outside my NAT firewall.
I did run nettest, but got a little confused. When opening ports with my windows firewall (which is turned off), it asks for not just a port number but a name. What do I put in the name text box, since nettest only gives me numbers, not names?
Any advice that anyone can give me about this would be greatly appreciated. I miss my STO.
Thanks for the advice, I'll give that a shot. I may end up taking my box to a friend's house and seeing if I can download it on his connection. If that doesn't solve it, are there any other ways of getting the patch?
Try using a wired connection, might be overloading either your wireless card or the router's radio.
Had to del the client now D/L patch to existing files.
The Log in works to the Patch bar every time it loads the patch and when I would hit Engage as i Did in Open Beta.. the file from your Cryptic Macro DEmo link let us down. I'm at 7.1%
I hate to del every time to fix something this happen to us for Open beta Corrupt Pigs That time.. That's not you its QA on the D/L side of the house something you coders need to discuss with Zinc and the Server ADMIN.
What this means to you at Los Gatos.
Perspective customers are reaching your site excited [as they should be]
Then they invest sometime downloading things look great ...then these bad files won't allow a person to have some simple fun. In open beta due to demand the files servers were slow and Server limits meant it was hard to log in for a good version.
I spent 1.5 days of Open Beta just trying to get a good copy.. Then the last weekend had the log in accounts server troubles. So out of 7 days I only had 4 to look at this. Only to return and have the Game Client file bad that's not good but its fixable.
IF it was the Live Box version it would be like Starfleet command III launching with fatal errors and dx9 bad coding.. Something to make people loose interest at a time that could have them Blogging on the old Star Fleet Command Boards to get the troops out and join in. Our fleet board formed in Open Beta for SFCII after the core had been active in SFC I We had over 200 registered members and one of the Top rated Romulan Fleets ever in Star League play. Don't let us down forthe next preview weekend.
The Digital or Box Client should have been exactly the same for the DEmo version.

Cannot log in to STO look here !
Good morning STO open beta members,
We have been getting reports from users stating that they are getting disconnected from the servers during login and map transfers. Below are some steps we are taking to solve this issue.
1) We're increasing server capacity. We have new machines coming in to add to the server, and we've put a rush order on them. We're going to bring them online as soon as we can.
2) We're working on software solutions as well. Our development team is working night and day to be able to get as much power as we can from each machine, and we're focusing on increasing capacity, and server stability.
For now, all we can say is please keep trying. You never know when you might be able to get in!
Thank you for your patience, thank you for your support, and thank you for your interest in Star Trek Online!
