I recently asked about this on the "Ask Cryptic" thread, but it was closed shortly after and I'm unsure how many others had read it or if this subject had already been broached:
How long before we will be able to assign one of our Bridge Officers as XO, and when we can what additional functionality will they have as Executive Officer? (IMHO, they should be exempt from the rank limitations placed on thier assigned stations, and be allowed to use any of thier skills thier rank grants them.)
In this same vein I also wondered if Cryptic was going to expand the roles of the Bridge Officers when it came to non-combat away missions? (IMHO, it would be nice to see thier specific skills applied during away missions)
And I must apologize if this is an old subject, but I coudn't find another Thread discussing this, so I posted the question here. So if anyone has any additional ideas or information concerning the use of First Officers (or the expanded roles of the existing ones), please post them here. Thank you in advance.
Cryptic has said they're looking into it. As you can see from the Engineering Reports there's nothing on the schedule between now and July. Hopefully it'll be some time this year.
Well the ask Cryptic will be released later after they read it, so your still good, as for first officers from what I understand on bridges that have more the one chair where the captain's seat, picks the tac officer you had the longest, don't quote me on that because I'm just going off what I heard.
on that note it would be great to be able to promote an officer, as for when it is happening, I'm not sure you could read the Engineering reports, let me double check to see if its on there, brb
When they implement the 1st officer function, I'd like to see it add a universal Boff slot to represent the XO (you could pick any of the three classes for your XO).
And if you want to switch to an XO of another class (specialty), you would have to discharge your XO (possible representing them being given their own command) instead of just swapping out for another Boff willy nilly.

I do remember seeing "First Officer" in the "Under Investigation" on one of the Engineering Reports.
Perhaps they have pushed it back?
I just scanned them all and found nothing on any of the lists given us. I do remember Dstahl replying to a question about XOs in that section but that was only to say there were looking into ideas on it.

Ya know, I had an idea recently regarding bridge officers.
I was thinking to add a small role play element, you could get a bonus from the Captain rank and beyond if you use certain bridge officers for away or space missions. At present, the game in the early stages can restrict you to one to two officers for certain away team missions, but if it gave you a bonus to choose to take certain bridge officers on missions...
Such as combat missions give you a 2% to 5% experience boost, if you take your Tactical over your Science for healing or Engineer for buffs or devices.
OR, if I go down to a planet where negotiations is key, I take my Ferenginar Engineering BO with me over my Andorian tactical officer. After all, I am not there for a fight. I am there to fix things and negotiate(see the Ferengi thread on improving Ferengi traits). If a fight breaks out, any of my BO can handle themselves, but place an incentive to take that shot at role playing the game. It's what made some of the TNG and DS9 episodes so great. It was not always Riker and Picard.
Same would apply to which BOs you leave up on the ship. This would not grant as great of a buff or expereince boost, but it would be great if you are going down to a planet for a ground mission and you can choose the "Cannon" choice where you must leave certain characters on the ship to act as first officer or acting captain while you take other oft-unused characters such as an Alien or Ferengi character down to the planet surface. This would automatically give you a 3% boost to experience.
I always hate it when the officer that contacts me from space or on the ground is not typically the officer I would expect to be telling me the scans are complete(tactical officer) or the best course of action is to fight(science officer). Sure, the TV shows showed us that the roles of Starfleeet officers are versatile regardless of the shirt they wear, but this is a minor thing that should please the role players while also giving the non-role players an incentive to see what the "role-play" experience of STO is all about.

When an Officer is selected to become the Executive Officer the should have a the highest rank out of all of the Officers (or have a rank equal to the highest held by any Bridge Officer ). An Ensign should never be XO if you have a Lt. Commander available (for example).
This also means no other Bridge Officer can be promoted to a rank higher then that held by the XO, and if the Officer is ever "demoted" he/she should then be Discharged from your crew (helps keep folks from having a "revolving XO").
It seems with these simple things they could easily give us a workable XO, that could later be refined as more Player input was had, I only hope that such a thing happens soon...it just feels wierd not having a "Number One".
Lastly I want to thank everyone who responded so quickly to my query. Sadly I did think more folks would have an interest in this option (and therefore speak up), but perhaps the powers-that-be will still view this as something that needs addressing and give us something.
Chain of command isn't always determined by highest Rank in Starfleet. Data's 3rd in command even though there are probably several officers of higher Rank them himself on the ship. In Gambit Data takes command of the Enterprise and promotes Worf to XO even though Geordi is higher Rank.

I would say with that precedence, you are correct...I would definitely amend my idea to remove the "rank restriction". Thank you for pointing that out.
I do hope with ship interiors being released, and with Main ENgineering and Sickbay being added as functional rooms related to healing of crew and equipment that we also get Chief Engineers and Medical Officers who given added bonus to these functions.
Seriously, it is Star Trek, we need more fleshed out crews and crew functions.

I'm not sure how thier roles would be expanded to create these positions or how they would work with (or in spite of) the "standard" Bridge Officers.
