I was doing the B'Tran dailies this morning and the enemies were Remans. I took out two Mogai escorts and then came the third. It looked as though I would also take the third one out without much of a problem and my shields seemed fine. My ship was a science ship of the Deep Space variety, the ones with a nacelle underneath like a skate. Then the Reman took me out with what seemed like a single shot (a torpedo I think).
What could have caused such a lucky shot? I was using a resilient shield for protection from plasma weapons because I forgot to change to the disruptor type when I realized the enemies would be Reman/Romulan. I carry five or six shields in my inventory so I can change the shields to suit the situation.
I had that happen with the same sci ship/level, and Mogai. I think its a close range heavy torpedo that you don't see because it hits instantly due to the short distance or something. I figure its my punishment for being glued to the enemy, but it also works for you. Get within 0.2 km range and use Torpedo High Yield. Bam, Mogai dead, shields or not.
Also keep in mind that enemy weapons have the same abilities as your own. An enemy's phaser beam has the same 2.5% chance of turning off one of your subsystems as yours do against theirs. Having your Shields go down just as a cannon blast of torpedo wave is coming at you is going to be sure-death just as it would be for them.
Aye, I have been in a couple of those situations here recently.
Think one of them was when I was fighting the Undine.
Guess I forgot to set my shield facing back up, and the Undine ship clobbered me in one hit.
Yes, I was right by it to, my thinking is the same as another poster on this.
I was just too close and got hit right in the gut by a torpedo at close range.
Lol, consider it a lesson learned I guess.
Keep a solid distance away from the heavy hitters to give yourself a window of time to react in before you get plastered.
Also, funny thing is, I was in a DSSV as well lol.
Haven't had this happen that I can recall. Only thing similar is I took on a Borg Cube the other day and within seconds my shields were gone. Not sure if that's just me, or if Cubes are bugged. And this was on Normal.

It was likely a high yield critical hit on a plasma heavy torp, which can crit upwards of 40-50k.... One shield facing on a science ship has about 8000-9000 shield, and you only have 18-22k hull. The last wave of science nerfs did make science ships very squishy. So a 40k hit is a one shot. It is what makes Tricobolt and Plasma torps so dangerous in PvP. If you drop them right, you one shot your target.
Tricobolts can do over 40k on a regular hit, and on my Klingon, I have hit with a TCD for over 100k on a critical. Just gotta be careful of the blue and green balls of doom.
Actually the "invisible" hits is a competely different issue unrelated to distance as such. It happens because the damage to your ship was calculated when the torpedo was fired. So even if you were to break weapons range and put all your buffs up, if the torpedo was fired when your hull was exposed and unbuffed you will be hit fully trough shields and resistances.
Its a knows issue I have reported repeatedly since the borg STF one shot madness. Another poorly designed mechanic that needs addressing, hopefully sometime...
