11 GB Patch? Server issues and cant loging.

I just got the game today through Steam. Played the demo and bought the full retail. I have the game installed and after ANOTHER 8GB "patch" was able to play through for the first time for a few hours. However, the steam download is still trying to run ( I downloaded the game via STO server and cant figure out how to stop the steam download) and the client window is now trying to download ANOTHER 11 GIG patch??? What gives?

It seems I have something very screwy going on with steam and the STO download process becoming mixed up or something. Should I just uninstall EVERYTHING and start over from scratch?

Also, if I try to use the "GameClient.exe" im my Cryptic/STO/Live/ folder I can get to the login screen but it cannot connect to the server.

This is getting very frustrating as I have been playing the game for a few hours and it for some reason thinks it needs to download another 11gig patch, unless of course it was JUST released which I doubt.

Any help is appreciated.

I uninstalled everything, demo and retail and spent the entire day while I was at work redownloading the client. Got it downloaded and patch, and played for a few hours. Got up this morning and its not patching like it was the first time, so I guess its fixed.

Thats my problem now, been about 4 hours waiting on this 11Gb patch. Is this a real patch or it reading things all screwy? I played the demo today for a few hours then decided to go buy it retail. Didn't install it, as it said online all I had to do was enter my retail key and I could run launcher.

Should I uninstall the demo and install from the CD, then try to play?

11GB is the size of the entire game, so that would usually mean the launcher is confused about where the game files should be installed and is downloading to the wrong place. The two things to look at are the value of the HKCU\Software\Cryptic\Star Trek Online::InsallLocation registry key (which is should have been set my the Steam installscript) and when then launcher is running you can press X to bring up the transfer debug dialog and look at the root="" in the top right. That root folder shows where the launcher is patching to. If those are not the same (or the registry key isn't there) something is probably wrong.

I dont think i used Steam to install. I DL the demo from the website. Maybe it'd just be easier to uninstall the demo and reinstall my new retail version.

ETA...yes it was trying to put the items in the program files/cryptic/ sto/live. When I DL the demo it put it in the C:/Users/user/Public/Games folder area. I just moved the files from there to where it was patching to. Gonna go try it now.

I preordered through Steam, and it totally f-ed up. I downloaded the beta, then, when the 'head start' began, it totally wiped the client and redownloaded the entire thing, rather than download the relatively small patch that converted the beta to the head start client. After that, I moved the STO client out of the Steam\steamapps folder, and altered the registry key mentioned by coderanger (HKCU\Software\Cryptic\Star Trek Online::InstallLocation) to match where I'd stuck it. Since then, not had a single problem.

Moral of the story: Steam is **** for MMOGs.
