Why this game fails for me.

Ok I tried the free trial and ran into immediate problems.

First registering for a new account is easy and painless, A plus.

Downloading the game is where problems start for the new player immediately. Compared to the painless way of downloading eve this sucks.

The official download sights download at a max measly rate of 60 to 85 kb a sec. Luckily steam came to the rescue. Then after 8gb of downloading I have to download 2.4 gb of patches this time from cryptic no steam option. A minus.

When you start the game you can't do anything but talk to people. Really isn't till you get to rescue the a spaceship that you see any combat. But that would be forgivable if the space part of the game was cool.

First of all its all pew pew. You can't explore. You can't say for instance be on earth and decide to warp to pluto to see how it works. You have to have a mission The game is all instanced no plantery exploration, no system exploration, all you are able to do is warp to systems and view the planet the devs want you to view.. A minus.

I won't point out that the game has a big grind which is expected of any mmo.

Sadly STO is a great disappointment to me and I will be resubbing to eve soon. At least there isn't a lack of things to do on eve.

Sorry to hear that, I suggest you take a look back at the game in July as that is when Season 2 is scheduled to come out.

There are patches for every MMO and new installations will ALWAYS have large amounts of patches to download.

True there isn't much exploration, but you only played through the demo so you really haven't felt the full impact of the game. Just so you know our entire Solar System has been created by Cryptic, but they haven't released it yet (at least that's what I heard).

You can explore Vulcan, Andoria, and a few other places. Keep in mind this game is only 3 months old.

    What big grind? Just curious

Unfortunately, STO pretty much shackles you to the story and doesnt allow much room for you to create your own story. Star clusters are nice, but need much more variety than the same hand full of missions over and over again. Hopefully player generated content will solve this issue.

Have you heard any news about player generated content? I haven't read anything so I'm still assuming the reason is because all content needs to be approved by CBS.

Coderanger - who programs most major changes for STO - is currently working on user-generated content, according to dstahl.

I don't know if he/she's working on the Cryptic-wide UGC tools for the engine or if he's doing the game-specific iteration of it.

If he does that, he'll have more GB to download since the game keeps growing and evolving. And one of his first criticisms was having to download more stuff after downloading the initial demo.

Slow? It can get done in 15 minutes with a good internet connection, and besides once its finished you don't have to do it again. So even if it took an hour that is only one hour less that you are playing. Now compare that to all the hours you'll be playing after the patch. That hour will seem like nothing.

In my opinion the download times shouldn't be a factor in deciding not to play this game anymore. If it took a day to download that is a different situation, but it doesn't. Your other reasons are valid though. If you really think this is a game you want to play just keep an eye on the forums for the latest news. Maybe after Season 2 is released you'll want to give it another try.

Until they start delivering a p2p system (like WoW's torrents) I don't see it happening.

For me its taking forever to patch, more than the actual download, 18.7% after 1 hour, probally gunna leave it on overnight :/
