The Excelsior class is the clear winner in the new ship poll. That being the case, its probably safe to say we'll be seeing it in game at some point in the future. There are several good questions about how this ship will be implimented, but my main question is will this ship be customizable? And I dont just mean the pattern on the hull, I mean the individual peices of the ship itself. I hope it is, and Cryptic doesnt go the cheap/easy way like they did with TOS connie.

I thought it would just be added as a skin for my T2 cruiser.

I would imagine that they would bring it in as a T2 variant with the Excalibur, Constitution and Vesper. If that is the case then I would assume that it would have the same customization options as the other ships in the game.
On a side note, even though the Excelsior is 500 votes ahead (at the time of this post), it's still the closest poll yet
Why the Excelsior? It's practically the same damn ship as the Vesper. Why vote to have them waste time on a virtually identical ship when they could implement something new?

That would be because people have been clamoring for several specific ships from canon to be included into the game ever since the Federation ship list was released, more than any other ship(s) in the game. Those ships are the Excelsior, Nebula, and Ambassador.
The fact that it is similar to the Vesper is irrelevant as people want the exact ship.
Because the Excelsior is probably the best looking ship starfleet has ever (and will ever) produce
I guess hoping for it to be a T5 ship with universal bridge and equipemnt stations is too much to hope for?

this is my concern too. i'd rather they worked on something new like the oberth. exfailciour sucks.

The Vesper's resemblance to the Excelsior is vague at best.
You might as well claim the Galaxy is the same as the Emissary.
I'm not exactly sure that a 450 vote lead on a poll which only consists of about 5% of the fan-base voting indicates a "clear winner" but it's certainly ahead so far.
If it were up to me Excelsior would be a new T3 Ship type with 3 skins of its own. The same would go for the Nebula. For the Excelsior I'd jiggle around with the Consoles and give it 2 ENG, 2 TAC, and 1 SCI. I'd give the Nebula 2 END, 2 SCI, and 1 TAC.
Because thats what the most people want, simple as that. An MMO is a business, so when making decisions such as what ship to add next, Cryptic obviously tries to do what will please the most people. Whether you think it resembles a ship in game or not has nothing to do with the fact that its a business decision.
-original Excelsior style
-Enterprise B style
-24th century refit style (new nacelles, phaser strips etc.)
and the parts can of course be swapped between them
I also think it should be an optional replacement for the tier 3 cruiser
im not gonna pay over 100 cryptic points for a T2 ship, some can...but it should be added to the game as a standard ship and not something we have to earn or pay for...just another variant in game...if it was T5 maybe it would be different but T2 ships are pretty much useless for alot of RA players.

Its interesting you should say that, because I am currently Captain 9 and still using a T2

on what difficulty setting though? hmm...
I like flying around a Constitution for fun, but I cant do a whole lot with it...the Excelsior would likely be the same way...which is why id rather not pay for it.
Normal, though I could probably pull of advanced. But using a T2 ship at high levels is something of a challenge in itself, even on normal, so I enjoy that.
I could see the Excelsior would be a tier 3 ship. I don't think the Vesper is much like the Excelsior at all. For one the Vesper is close in size to the Constitution Refit. Now MA doesn't have to many stats on the ships so i had to do a bit of searching. MA has the Constitution at 289 meters. They don't have the size for the Excelsior. So I went to Wikipedia. They have the Constitution at 289-305 meters. And they have the Excelsior at 467 meters. So size wise I don't know how accurate wikipedia is but from what Scotty says in the movie is that its a big ship. Also in a DS9 episode they bring out the Lakota. Which was another refit.
So personally I would like to see the Lakota variant be a T4 ship and maybe even have a new refit to put it at T5. I personally love that ship. Ideally they could put the original Excelsior design in as T3. That way i could have it through T3-T5 Wishful thinking i know. But for a ship that the federation designed to be refitted it wouldn't be to much of a stretch.
the Excelsior should be a tier 3 ship since she was like twice the size of the Connie Refit. any doubt about that just watch the end of Undiscovered Country. Side by Side in orbit and the Excelsior made the Enterprise look like a destroyer even though she was a Heavy Cruiser

The excelsior would need to be its own separate ship (ala the TOS Cons****ution) if it is going to fit into T3.
They can not make it a skin if it is going into that tier.
It is 2 nacelles short for that tier, in terms of skinning and geometry.
So ... it's possible to put it in that tier. But not as a skin.
The excelsior should be teir 2 and i would expect itt to a a skin like the other shps we've had i would be surprised if we get 3 varients. but i think there is a 4 naceled vrsion in an TNG epsoide as a decomissioned ship so maybe its possibe tho
If its not t5 then many wont buy it , it needs to be t5 to get full use out of it and many posts will arise asking for it to be t5 refit etc.
That would really not sit well with many fans such as myself, as the Excelsior should not be on an equal level with the Sovereign (or higher than the Galaxy for that matter)........
It needs to be relegated to tier 3 since thats about the age class of it. Who would use this into tier 4? It should be stuck exactly the same as it is. If you could customize it it would cease to be the excelsior and then become a constitution refit. There is very little difference besides the mid 80s detroit auto lines. I'd probably get it but I would have to name it the U.S.S. VWRABBIT or the U.S.S. Yugo and keep it hidden because the sight of it makes me question why Sulu wanted to serve on it besides the fact that it would be his first command and not the actual aesthetics of the ship.
Cryptic shouldnt even have asked about this. All they are doing is ticking people off. Loosing subs. Etc. Seems they like doing that. And putting the cart before the horse and fixing stuff that isnt broken until they fix it.

I wouldnt use it at Tier 5. There is no way an Excelsior class ship could hold up to a barage of quantum torpedoes or tetryon weapons at the levels they would be coming at them. It would destroy immersion and believability of the game. It needs to be a tier 2 or 3 ship.
The Enterprise J would be a more believable ship in tier 5 than the excelsior.
That thing's a monster from what I read about it, and shouldn't ever be considered for such things. I agree though that the Excelsior should be its own class in Tier 3. It was visibly larger than the Constitution Refit Enterprise-A. When the USS Cairo meets up with the Enterprise-D so Jelico can take over for Picard for a while, You get a size comparison of the original Excelsior vs the Galaxy.
Excelsior definitely needs to be T3. It slots between the Constitution and Galaxy in size and capability. The Ambassador was deliberately created as an intermediary between Excelsior and Ambassador, so I propose Cryptic could kill two birds with one stone by introducing a new T3, 2 nacelle heavy cruiser.
Excelsior / Excelsior-refit / Ambassador.
Saucers are very similar between all 3, which isn't an accident.
The base Excelsior hull with the additions on the refit and the obviously different secondary hull of the Ambassador, but not as different as say... Sovereign from Majestic.

Yes, clearly the Excelsior is nothing compared to the flying bathtub.
Oberth special ability: Explode after being hit by a BoP once.
