A pizza with out the crust.
I have all the toppings i want but nothing to hold it together.
where is the content that keeps people engaged and wanting to come back to the game?
What is the goal, purpose?
What is there in game that builds community?
Suggestions
Player made starbases:
using commodities collected through pve or pvp content. there are tons of ways to build player commitment through ownership and personal attachment to an ingame posession.
Persistant content:
PVE content that is dependent on the longterm comitments of fleets and players, defending a sector against the borg as the population of borg increase in sectors it advances to the next zone ect.
PVP persisant zones control of specific areas rewarding in access to more resources or content.
Viable economy based on trade and crafting. Niether of which are in game now, in any real form.
right now Developers seem so wrappted up in pet projects they are losing sight of what keeps people returning to the game,
Wow the quest for items that required 5-25 people to complete.
EQ the grind for all the cool speical items, housing stuff guild halls, and items
STO er everyone gets the same stuff by doing exploration missions, raidesodes for 5 people with marginal rewards. instanced pvp, and no large group play.
Pizza with out the crust
I personally hope that NONE of your suggestions come to pass.
I play this game because it IS NOT the other games. (EQ and/or WOW)
I DO NOT want STO to become or in any way resemble the other games.
If you are looking for a pizza you like and the other mentioned titles are to your liking then please by all means go eat them. Please don't muddle up this pie just because it's not to your liking.
I would never suggest that the other titles should be changed to resemble STO and I don't think STO needs to change either.
Just pick a game and play what you are looking for. This game is fine just as it is.
As far as content that keeps players of STO coming back? If you have to ask this game isn't for you. Simple as that.

I respect you opinion. But in my opinion this game stinks. Many bugs, lack of choices, bad ground combat, not much reason to do anything other than dps you butt off.

I dont want to play those games but I seriously doubt that you will be playing this game at this time next year even if you were a life member.
Why?
nothing to keep you here.
I never said i wanted this game to be like those other games, IF you learn to read with out interpreting or adding your own conclusions as to my intent.
I said that each of these games had a way of giving the players a feeling of ownership or buyin to some sort of endgame goal, STO however has nothing that entices players to comeback once they reach the end game content, nothing to maintain the players intrest in any meaningful way.
as far as "PIZZA with out the crust" if there is no crust it really is nolonger pizza just a what atkins dieters dream of what a pizza should be, a pile bowl of sauce melted cheese and some ingredients mixed in.

Out of curiosity, what about ground combat is bad?
It feels a lot less monotonous than other "I hit you now you hit me, repeat" systems in other games.
Also, I think a lot of what the OP made suggestions on adding are good ideas.
I would've suggested "Pizza without the cheese" IMHO, if it had no crust we wouldn't be behind these limitations.
My be 6 feet under by the time there done but they fixing. They did not understand how content heavy Star Trek is when they relased this game and lost a lot of people over that error.

Awfully bitter eh?
Could also say a pizza with the crust would be a limitation.
Then the filling cannot expand beyond the border that has been set up.
So if STO is a pizza without the crust then that would be a good thing no?

In development, slowly trickling out bit by agonizing bit, just like most games in this genre. Think of it this way ... say you join a league online that does Madden seasons in John Madden Football. After your first season, why come back at all? At least this game gives you new stuff every few months.
What is the goal, purpose?
That only you can answer. There is still an RPG element. You do have to use your imagination. Why is your character there? What's your backstory? What is your goal?
What is there in game that builds community?
Forums, Fleets, in-game chat, as well as the ability to write your own captain's logs, publish them on the web-site and link to them through social networking sites like facebook. I'm not entirely sure what it is you feel is needed to glue all these parts together?
Persistant content:
PVE content that is dependent on the longterm comitments of fleets and players, defending a sector against the borg as the population of borg increase in sectors it advances to the next zone ect.
What would be the point of defending Starbase 69 Map #16 from the borg in a persistent way, when they can just go assimilate Starbase 69 Map #8 instead? Instancing is a roadblock in your idea.
Viable economy based on trade and crafting. Niether of which are in game now, in any real form.
This is star trek. The federation in star trek has show in its episodes that they no longer value currency. Which sets up a pretty big story centric roadblock to this idea. Perhaps if they develop the ferengi alliance? But until then ... a player-run economy akin to something you'd find in some other MMO is out of place in the United Federation of Planets.
It'd be like me asking for lightsabers. Sure they look cool. But ... don't really fit this game.
right now Developers seem so wrappted up in pet projects they are losing sight of what keeps people returning to the game,
If you're a star trek fan, a player centric economy isn't waht brought you to this game.
EQ the grind for all the cool speical items, housing stuff guild halls, and items
I think you mean Everquest II, as EQ I was not really about the housing stuff.
so to read this post, I've come to the realization that there are a lot of 'kool-aide' drinkers. This game is only BARELY playable. Its too small. Too full of bugs. End game content that's just plain TRIBBLE. Too few good missions along the way to level cap as most are repetitive grinds that you can pretty much sleepwalk through. Space combat is pretty fun but ground combat gets very boring and repetitious and most often doesn't even really require your attention to play. your BOs can kill everything for you while you go make a sandwich. And up to the, now 4, raidisodes there's no strategy needed to get anything done. Crafting system that's a laughingstock and an economy that's in shambles. There just isn't a whole lot to like about this clunky, boring, unimaginative, zerfest of a game.
Which I am actually very sad about, because i really wanted to like this game. Maybe if it hangs on for a year and they get a finished product and a ton more content...then maybe I can like it.

As part of a open-pvp sector(s) that uses the current war as a storyline - yes.

Sounds great if tied to the open-pvp sector(s) as a side storyline.

If it can exist as a Pirate eceomy not affiliated with the current Federation/Klingon economics, this would be fun.

Like a dream come true! *hops around happily*
Anyways... Bad analogy. Not all pizzas have crust and the crust itself is really not needed to keep the toppings in place.

Those were my thoughts exactly! (:
It's coming with the Season 2 update, currently scheduled for July.
I agree, and at least one of the developers has said that they'd love to do this.

pve/pvp
pve lite(missions), pve heavy(wormholes)
pvp lite (low sec) pvp heavy(alliance wars)

STO: A Pizza without the crust...
When you ordered and paid for a stuffed crust pizza because you liked the cheese inside.
You have to search through a bunch of empty boxes to get the morsels of tasty goodness, but in the end there is not nearly enough to satisfy you.
