Hello all i have a question for all you veterans.
Im a commander 6 and coming up on captain i will be getting a free respec token. Im just wondering at max level will an assault cruiser with a DPS setup come anywhere close to an escort in terms of dps, or are they forever deemed a tank and "support class". Thanks ahead of time for all your input!

With the changes they did to the balance system on Tribble, I have no idea if an AC's effective DPS are higher than an Escort's. I can tell you that an Escort's burst damage on Holodeck can utterly destroy any target...which definitely won't be the case anymore as soon as the next patch goes live.
Also, as a personal pet peeve, proper capitalization and use of apostrophes is not rocket science.

You can setup an assault cruiser for damage output.
Put 6 or 8 beams on it, 2 EPS Consoles in Engineering Slots, 2 Weapon Power consoles in Engineering, and in Tactical 1 Beam Weapon console and 2 WeaponSpecific consoles (there are diminishing returns, previously my build was 3 Phaser consoles, but it was pointed out to me its better to slot a BeamWeapon Console in one of those slots)
Set weapons to 100, and spec Weapon Performance for a bonus to high weapon power.
You will want to use the EPS Power Transfer ability if you are an Engineering captain (its a captain specific ability) because that will give you a nice bonus for 30 seconds. Alternate that with Emergency Power to Weapons 3 (or whatever level you have available). To maintain high maximum weapons power. Firing 6-8 beams will really drain it so you want it very high.
Currently the game allows you to have your weapon power higher than 125 though various bonuses and abilities and all math is performed on your actual weapon power. It just only displays up to 125. I'm kind of waiting for this to get fixed.
Although, there is this huge DPS and powers change on Tribble. So I'm altering my approach to my cruiser. It won't work this way after the patch I fear.
EDIT: Also, there is no way that you are going to equal the DPS of a properly setup Escort. But if you set your cruiser up correctly, you can sustain really good DPS, just realize if you want insane burst damage and cannons and all that, just fly an Escort.
hmm ok thanks. So it is possible to focus on blowing stuff up as a cruiser, or am i forever doomed to be a support class?
You will never blow up stuff as fast as an Escort. That's the Escorts role.
That doesn't mean you can't kill your enemies, though. But it means you do it by surviving what they throw at you and outliving them. Neither before nor after the Tribble changes will your fights be "fast" - at least never as fast as with an Escort.
I don't think you will be doomed to be support. But you will probably still be doomed to use abilities that are mostly defensive in nature. Defensive builds before and after the change seen on Tribble will certainly change, too. And so will Support builds.
(If you worry about the changes, make sure to test them on Tribble and give feedback on the Tribble forum to share your experiences and observations.)
Right now Tacs in Assault Cruisers do very fine. This is the catch - there seems to be a trend to turn the "Assault" Cruiser into something undesirable, and rather have Engineers using Star Cruisers for that little extra support or tankability.
Upcoming changes tested on Tribble at the moment they want to pidgeonhole Tac Officers into Escorts, Engineers into Cruisers and Science Officers in Science Vessels can go home while their cooldowns expire.
No thanks i'd rather not. Either way, your a pedant.
Well, you're certainly entitled to your opinion. But in all honesty, doesn't posting in this thread because of that sentence I added in my OP as an afterthought make you seem quite pedantic as well? Takes one to know one, it seems.

Are you German? Or just living there?

Heh. First time anybody's asked me that. Care to take a guess?

Thanks for the compliment, but I really am German. You in the vicinity of Heidelberg by any chance?

Ah. Thought you might be part of the US forces stationed in Heidelberg. You're on the other side of the country. Wow.
