I read this in a dev response to one of the massive whine threadnaughts about the dubious method of gaining a Galaxy-X. Apparently we will get T5 versions of the standard T4 ships in some future update when they raise the skillcap.
So I have a suggestion about these new T5 classic trek ships. Don't give them upgrades like our current T5s - what I mean is, don't give the T5 Galaxy an extra tactical ensign and console, or Science ensign and console, etc. Instead they should have an extra ensign and console which augments their primary role:
T5 Galaxy would have an extra engineering ensign and console (5 eng consoles total).
T5 Defiant would have an extra tactical ensign and console. (5 tac)
T5 Intrepid would have an extra science ensign and console. (5 sci)
This will make them different from the other T5 ships in their own special way.
I see no reason why not all ships can be T5. We'd see much more variety in space. Not thousands of Galaxies and Gryphons or Defiants. The smaller ships could have less hull but still max shield for its class but higher maneuverability to compensate the lower hull value. Would be nice to see some of the good old ships again.
Talking with the systems designer who is working on the Galaxy - there is a goal to bring iconic ships to the end game - not just as geo variants - but with unique functionality. The Galaxy X is the first such ship he's working on but it is setting the tone for how the others will/may work. The trade-off may be that these ships will be restricted from customization. Take for example the Galaxy. One of the reason's we haven't implemented a Galaxy saucer separation yet is because the fx to do so will not work with all the different parts that players can customize on their ship. However if we restrict the geo customization - we could do cool features like that and make some of these end tier ship super unique. btw.. we are currently *not* working on a Galaxy saucer separation power - but we'd sure like to.

Well at least Tier 3 and up, because the stargazer and a few others were awsome. Id like to see more of those flying around.
I have a feeling by that time, T5 Ships will become outdated before "New current" ships take over, I.E. T6 and/or T7. Not saying its a bad idea, I think it will be too late(maybe a month or so if lucky to enjoy this). I am sure a expansion will come out in several months to "Up the Anti". The change would be negated.
Obviously my post is pure speculation, but its what I believe will happen.
Pretty sure that the T5 variants of Galaxy and Defiant were in motion long before the Galaxy X referral nonsense. That came about simply because Iconic TV ships such as Enterprise and Defiant appeal to players and they want to use them at level cap.
I think that Cryptic realised that they had dropped the ball with these two ships especially and decided to give them to us in a stronger variant for end game.

I tend to agree. Whenever this happens I'm sure we'll see something similar to this.
T5 Galaxy w/saucer sep
T5 Defiant w/battle cloak
T5 Intrepid w/ablative generator armor
It's also worth noting that Dstahl said that they were working on making these 'end tier' ships super unique. That leads me to believe that T5 ships are the final tier of ships in the game which means we won't be seeing T6 ships. That's probably a good thing in my opinion since it means that eventually we'll have a much more varied endgame ship experience instead of a limited number of T5 designs and then even more limited T6 ones.

Keep in mind this is all still being developed. There is some conflicting info out there as all the details are still being worked out. dstahl also mentioned level 51 in a post. Which IS tier 6. Or not. We don't know, until he knows and is allowed to let us know he knows.

So some of this is still very subject to change.
Of course it is, everything's always subject to change in an MMO. There's always a chance we'll see T6, T7, T8 and so on but at what point do you just stop adding tiers and having to play 'catch-up' with updating earlier ships and other things players might want? It seems odd to give players some of the most-wanted ships as special T5s with unique abilities if they're going to be obsolete at T6 and you'll have to start all over again.
I think that it is a bit silly to want lower-tier ships to be identical in capabilities to larger ships. Number of weapons, hit points, and so on should not change.
However, bridge officer stations and consoles should scale with the player. That alone would make older ships viable (to a point).
I like these ideas, id love to fly a Galaxy with saucer seperation in T5. I really cant stand all of these T5 Cryptic designs. Also, if they did all this for the Feds...what do the Klingons get??

My guess (guess, not substantiated by anyhing at all ):
There won't be Tier 6, 7, 8 ships like there were Tier 1,2,3,4 and 5 ships. They will have overall similar performance, but they will have a few unique abiliies. These might replace the Bridge Officer slots Tier 5 ships got.
Why this is my guess? THis is how I would do it. I have real doubts that they can create another 12 Federation ships and 3-4 Klingon ships for every tier. The process of creating a new ship model and getting the green light is far too complicated. The existing ship costumes would be obsolete if there would really be new tiers of ships. Nobody will buy a ship costume for a ship he will fly only for a few days of gametime!
Of course, an alternate way might be that they pick the Tier 4 ships, reuse them for Tier 6, then take the Tier 5 ships and reuse them for Tier 7, and so forth. But I doubt that.
it's TRIBBLE that they are going the route of making specific T5 ships and not just making a refit system which has been requested over and over on these forums. what happens when T6 ships come out, all the T5 ones just become useless.

I'm thinking other bonuses rather than just maneuverability, but keep their shield values what they are. They'd need a whole lot of buffs to compensate for the weapon slots and the BOs.

I thought he said only the Galaxy-X will have a special ability (phaser cannon).
Actually it was put forth by a dev:
lol let the crowd go crazy with insane speculations.

All Tier 5 Escorts should have Phase Cloak abilities.

As for the Defiant they are going to have to completely make it up, as there was never canon super version like the Galaxy-X or Warship Voyager.
The Galaxy X is not the Galaxy that will be the T5 Galaxy. I think you misunderstood something along the way there.
There will be the Galaxy X from the referral program. And there will be a T5 Galaxy, Intrepid and Defiant.
So they are going to have a T5 Galaxy and T5 Galaxy-X ... on the same tier as equal (minus like one extra power) ... oh that's smart.
/Sarcasm

Yup. That's the plan. And between those two, one will be seen very rarely. Since it's sort of a PITA to acquire.
I make no commentary on the awesomeness, or lack of awesomeness of their plan. Just letting you know what the plan is.
