Advice - about game realism

Hi,
I guess it wasn't ever going to be an option with this game, but I had really high hopes for it. I had an image of taking my ancient rag-tag constitution refit all over the galaxy, exploring, going places, interacting with people. I kind of hoped it would feel like a real immersive world.

Instead it's basically a grind up through ships I'm not that keen on. I kept the consitution refit as my main ship up into half way through captain, but it's beginning to get blown up instantly now... and the game is hugely instanced and everything is a little too shallow really.

I do really like the game and want to keep playing it, so this isn't one of those I quit threads. But the question is:
Are there any games set in space where you get a ship, upgrade it, and feel like you can go off exploring and interact in a more deeply thought out world? Not just one where you blast everything that moves iinstantly. Am I just looking for something that doesn't exist?

Please don't flame me too badly, I'm not leaving, I just wanted to tap the knowledge on here to see if there are any recommendations. Eve seems to in depth, Freespace is old... and I can't really think of any others - google isn't turning up much...

Thanks in advance!
Ian

I enjoy X3: Reunion A lot, but its singleplayer only.
Lots of actual exploration though and a dynamic game world economy so with plenty of combat and non combat elements.
There are even a few Star Trek mods/addon ships for the game.

    Eve. I'm afraid!

Old school you should check out freelancer - its not a MMO, but is a really good game.

Jump gate evolution is out later this year, that might be worth looking at too....

eve is great for feeling part of a real universe but it has its draw backs, very complex, difficult and unforgiving when you die. people either love it or hate it

freelancer is a gem of a game but only single player. dont dismiss it because its old

X3 as well but it can be very hard

X3 indeed. C+K+Ctrl+Q+Shift+0 to stop your ship. *shudder* :p

Ah but you can play Freelancer online. Used to that a while back. Good times.

Black Prophecy looks decent enough when it comes to an actual MMO. Probably gonna pick it up as secondary mmo once it goes live.

I always got in trouble for eating my cheese in blocks when i was younger :P

A good modern fighter game would definitely get my attention. I loved WC, XW v T and such. I even have my WC and XW v T floppies here still.

A friend of mine leveled from Lt. Commander to Admiral 5 in a refit Constitution. xD
