Tips for Elite Ground Combat

Alecto was kind enough to let me know (in a very nice way :)) I am vacuum-challenged at ground combat in elite mode. Since I want to leave the difficulty slider in Elite as I crave that level for space combat, and I don't want to dumb down play for you expert ground-level players, I find I could use some help in the way of succeeding at the ground combat.

I...I don't think it helps when the ground NPCs seem to focus all of their firepower on one enemy at a time (Sometimes) which usually results in death within seconds, so the AI could be tweaked further, the AI will probably always have room for improvement.

Generally on Elite, ground combat can be won easily provided you have a corridor or some kind of structure you can use to separate the enemy or funnel them, meaning you can take one or two at a time while the rest of the NPCs are still figuring out how to get to you.

For example, if I'm running through a corridor, I'll press M check the sensors on the map to see if the enemy is in the next room and then I'll position my bridge Crew in tactical formation in an attempt to flank the enemy inside the corridor.

Once I've positioned my Bridge Crew, I'll leave the corridor and sneak up to the nearest enemy, fire, then run back to the corridor. The enemy will hopefully follow one after the other, which allows my Bridge Crew and me to focus fire on the enemy one at a time as they enter the corridor.

However if your in a ground combat situation which is out in the open, where there are no structural objects you can use to your advantage, then your almost certainly going to have trouble.

So, any tips, tricks, links to guides, or practical advice would be very useful. I have one or two of every class, usually built out in different ways so all advice is welcome. Most of the ground encounters seem reasonable, but invariably there's one (possibly two) that after taking several injuries I finally just have to admit to myself I can't complete and am forced to abandon the mission (no fun ). The character I'm currently having the most trouble with is a Klingon Lt. Cmdr. Engineer setup as a fabrication specialist. In "normal" PvE play he's indestructible due to shield recharge, but gets focus-fire in "elite" play (he is often targeted and hit first even though he hasn't attacked the enemy (I usually order my BOs to attack while he fabricates a turret, but despite being under fire the enemy tends to ignore them and go for him)) and yes, this is over open ground.

Thanks!

Probably the biggest two that I learned in a post asking about Borg combat:

    1) Get some good polyalloy weave armor. Most of the Borg's most devastating attacks are physical damage and this has a high enough mitigation that you might actually survive the attack.
    2) If you're going to be a TRIBBLE and insist on meleeing (much like my Tac does), make sure your science officer is supplying Dylovene by the barrel.

As a Lt. Cmdr, he hasn't encountered too many borg yet. Its my understanding that the difficulty setting has no impact on the raidisodes yet. So, for my other RA-5 characters its just the same-old same-old.

    One tip:
When you come uppon a group of enemies milling around, never fight there. Set up your BOs out of sight from there, preferably where they can fire into a narrow killing zone, and where they have flank cover. Then lure the enemies to enter the kill zone. They usually trickle into view and get killed one by one.

Piggybacking on this one. You really need two complete sets of gear, based on who you're fighting. Learn which races hang back and shoot more, and which ones get more up in your face for some good ol' fashioned hack-and-slash. Change gear accordingly... armor for which type of protection you need more. Weapons... high DPS stuff for ranged races, high kickback stuff for meleers. If you know in advanced that you'll have to face Borg on the ground, make sure to have one tac (possibly two) with Suppressing Fire. Trust me, it helps a lot.

You may want to check out one of my threads here

Also, how are your skill point investments looking? I know if you do a lot of space PvP you're probably spec'd into space, but if you truly want to play the entire game on elite you may need a more balanced build.

Tried that, also with weapons and defense prefabricated. When I went to lure them they focus fired on me and I was down in under 1s. (Yes, had full shields & armor (not sure what type), best I could get as a Lt. Cmdr.)

The character is fairly well balanced, the points are distributed equally as I wanted this Klingon for both ground and space PvP/PvE. Previously I could always blame ground PvP fiascoes on my comrades , not sure I can do that anymore....

Thanks for the link. To be honest, separating them was my first thought too. But figured people I teamed up with overall would prefer me to be a better player (I'm guessing I'm average now as "normal" isn't a challenge and the raidisodes go fairly well). But, most importantly, if other people aren't finding it impossible (difficult is fine :D) than by golly I want to do it too!

That's a good tip, currently I believe he has armor to absorb energy (he's an engineer, not designed for melee). It's definitely something to double-check. I have a high dps in one slot, and a bat'leth in the other. If someone closes I generally knock them down, back up a few steps.
