Idea: Air Combat!

Just a wild idea i suddenly had when reading a thread on the forums of ground vehicles.
And according to Cryptic the physics involved are rather complicated.
But what is definatley is not too complicated would be air combat as we already have those basic physics! :D

I know what your thinking.... you think im prattling on about starship combat in planetary atmospheres... but your wrong.

What i am thinking is...shuttles and fighters engaging in combat within an atomsphere.
Theres definatley precedence for it since we have seen combat between light craft within planet atmospheres many times in the series and movies, ranging from class M atmospheres to combat inside Gas giants.(DS9: The Siege had a very good dogfight)

So now your probally asking... how would this be different?
Simple.....fast paced and minimal abilities.
No fancy abilities like Sci Team, VM, SNB etc, and a lot higher velocities(comparatively), and the most significant difference being not able to stop dead in mid-air to continue firing, but constant maneuvering combined with limited firing arcs.
In effect it would be all about dogfighting and putting your skills as a pilot to the test.
I definatley think it would be exciting and actually let us see some nice shuttle and fighter models as a change from all the capital ships were flying right now.

And there is yet another twist.
Options for planets or planetary missions, to be able to choose the Transporter and just beam down on the spot like we do now... or to decide to take a shuttle down to the planet and have to fly over the surface to find a suitable spot to land.
Maybe even expand exploration missions to force the use of shuttlecraft by say having heavy atmospheric ionization or that an outpost as deployed a transporter inhibitor.

I really don't know if this would ever happen or not, but its just an idea i thought i would throw out there! :D

    That would be cool. I'd also like to see missions where we have planets completely overwhelmed by enemy forces.

    The first half we fly a shuttle to clear the area of enemies. Could also make good exploration content.

    I also support ground vehicles because it likely means larger ground maps would come at the same time.

    And Star Trek V's Spock Rocket boots for vertical maps.

    Yes, I think Nemesis, Insurrection and Star Trek V have great gameplay mechanics. Like I've been saying since beta, it may be bad Trek in some people's eyes but it IS Trek and the gameplay would be fun. I'd rather see the worst Trek mined for good gameplay than the best Trek used in ways that don't make gameplay more fun.

    You know what would also be awesome is that the idea could even be expanded to air/ground combat.
    Adding some heavy weapons like tetryon pulse launchers or mobile torpedo launchers for anti-air.

    I kinda think of your idea as Blazing Angels (Xbox game) where we would bombard ground targets in a fighter/shuttle. could be fun

    Actually your idea was EXACTLY what I was thinking when i read the title.

    I was thinking Picard and Worf hunting Data in Insurrection... Am i still wrong?

    Insurrection was certainly one example. There are plenty of other runabout/shuttle/fighter examples throughout all series where this would mesh well. And it would give those of us with a Del Taco shuttle an excuse to use it. =D And the captain's yacht. And the runabout.

    There's also the opportunity for 'Condition Blue' missions, where a starship like the Intrepid-class is coming in for a landing and needs to be escorted by a variety of smaller craft... when suddenly, 'T'Liss fighters, twelve o'clock high!'

    I like this idea! It's exciting! :D

    Aren't they already entertaining the idea of runabout vs. fighter PVP? If so, then this idea is fully possible in the context of that larger framework. Simply a matter of having atmosphere specific maps for that overall shuttle/runabout/fighter combat system?
