Vehicles on Planets?

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Are there vehicles in any of Cryptic's other games? It would be fun to drive buggy carts on the planets, even teaming up Halo style where one player drives while the other shoots a mounted phaser or something.

Any chance of this happening?.

... the Starfleet Dunebuggy should remain in Nemesis where it belongs.

Vehicle physics has been a pony feature in our engine for something like 3 years now >_< The movement and physics system is unfortunately rather complex, and there is only one guy that has the know-how to do it, and he has had more important things to work on continually and probably will for the foreseeable future. But maybe, if the planets line up just right, one day!

Any insights into what features are being added from the coding-end?

Whilst i don't neccessarily disagree, i feel that most if not all the Cryptic designed starships in STO should have remained in their artists heads. The only one i found i have liked is the new one added today for the Star Cruiser variant. The rest i have to say are just disappointing.

    Sign that.

Yes a vehicle was ONCE shown. Actually the major part didnt like it.
The "Star Trek" fealing just comes when that "away team" beams down on foot. Or may be with a shutle.

Dear Q no Mad Max vehicles of any kind please. I prefer to see shuttles being expanded on instead.

The postage stamp sized maps really aren't condusive to vehicle use either, they would have to make specialized maps or larger areas of the planet to make vehicles make any sense at all.

I've heard this comment before... and I think we'd be more likely to see larger maps developed because vehicles are going to be added than see larger maps on their own.

Far prefer to have developed much larger maps where 'Space' becomes 'Intra-Atmosphere' and our ships become 'Shuttles'. NPC mobs become defence turrets and enemy shuttles/fighters.

We could 'Approach The Planet' as normal, then told that transporters won't work, so we'll have to go down by auxillary craft.

Quite how BOs would work in this set-up, I don't know. Perhaps a map-specific secondary 'Beam To Ship' button where we 'beam out' of our Shuttle, and back again.

or rather yet a more reasonable answer is their is no need for buggys since the planets are not open for actually discovering. remember folks these are not real plents we can explore. these are small sections we can go to when it comes to exploration. hell we cant even scan the plent life. you just get this shimmer that says something is this way. you dont know what that something is but its shimmering this way. hardly the intellectual atribute of a tricorder.

Lord, I hope not. If fhat whole dune buggy scene in nemesis wasn't an example of jumping the shark, I don't know what is.

One sees land vehicles in ST perhaps even less frequently than one sees ships executing 3D manuevers, so it would seem unlikely as it would not be IP immersive.

The transporter system in Star Trek negates the need for any vehicles, the only time you would need a vehicle was if you were unable to beam down to a location and had to be beamed a few miles away and drive in.

In the series they'd rather spend an hour or so working out a way to beam people in rather than have some sort of buggy take them there. Even if they couldn't beam in they'd use a shuttle craft to land near where they needed to be. The dune TRIBBLE in Nemesis was a ridiculous idea that failed on many levels. Please don't have these things in this game.

it actually brings up a good point that have been thinking about. I would like to be able to visit alien cities, civilizations, some with airtrams, and vehicles. not all planets are outposts (with virtually the same buildings) and dirt roads.

There would be no point in having vehicles. You would hit the edge of the shoebox in 30 seconds.

Agreed. The technology is there, and larger maps are possible, but with the kill 5/investigate 5 object missions that we have now, would be completely unnecessary. There isn't really any reason to make them larger.

If they were to add vehicles at some point, they could enlarge the size of the maps to handle them.

I think we'll probably see them more easily on the static worlds (Vulcan, Earth, Qo'Nos, etc.) in village/city areas, where the maps are persistent and hand crafted, instead of randomly generated instanced content. If they do add vehicles, I'd like to see shuttles first, then personal "vehicles" like Spock's rocket boots, then dunebuggys/cars. And then we'll need places to go in them. :)

True. But that arguement works both ways. It could also be said the reason maps are as small as they are is because we have to travel on foot. If that limitation were removed, it would allow them to make map sizes more meaningful.

As of now, the gound maps are tiny!! What on Earth do you need vehicles for?

If you played SWG before mounts, or even worse, World War II Online......then you would know what humping across a landscape was like.

Heh, the downside to any large map-based game. Anybody remember Operation Flashpoint? :)

Of course but it's a lot of supposition. There is currently a dearth of things to do in the exterior maps as it is. Making them bigger to accommodate vehicles could mean that all we end up with is more rocks or 'graves' to click, making an already pointless and repetitive task even more so. ( more supposition and pointless given it won't happen any time soon )

How are they going to fit vehicles inside a 11x11 planet

    coderanger ... MAKE SURE that "one guy" doesn't leave the team until he's passed on his knowledge of how this works to at least 3 successors. :);

Planets have vehicles in Star Trek. I'm not sure how this could be an immersion killer. It gives us something to do on the planets. They don't have to be federation vehicles.

Also, I've had a ton of fun with games that combine ground combat with vehicles and aircraft. Of course it requires larger maps, which I think everyone would welcome.
