I got the 10 day trial from a friend and it recently expired. My friend also lent me the disc that he got when he bought STO from a retailer, as at the time I wasn't able to download it from the STO site. I used that disc to download STO to my computer.
So, I have STO downloaded on my computer and am wondering if I need to go to Gamestop or somewhere like that to buy the actual box with disc etc. OR, can I just subscribe through STO's website?

no need to reinstal game or download it you just need the retail key that comes with the game purchase.
You then log in to your account at the main site enter your retail key (in the manual for box or email from digital download piurchases)
Select a subscription option (required)
Enter a payment method for the subscription , credit card, gametime car or paypal account (required)
once the payment method is validated
your account will be fullly activated. You will have 30 day game time bonus and you will not be charged for the subscription until after the 30 days are used up.
you also will still have your characters.
We even save you the trouble of pasting your key it, it will just be applied directly to your account to you can setup a subscription and get back to kicking the Borg where the sun don't shine
including the borg sphere seen out side sol all the time...
when i bought it with pre-order my key was not entered for me, but did get an email with it so i could play. course they could have updated since then. they been busy..
So there's no way to just start subscribing to the game? I have it downloaded from a friend's disc, as I couldn't get it to download online, and he wanted me to play the free trial to see if I like it. Which I do, a lot.
I don't want to have to outright buy the game, since I have it on my computer already. I just am hoping to start paying for the monthly subscription..
Yep, you still have to purchase a copy of the game to enter the retail key. Luckily for you, you can get it for around $20 now (I did a google search yesterday, looking for a copy to buy for my sister, and places are selling it for $19.95 or so), instead of the $50 I paid for it.
You'll still have to set up a subscription as well, but the copy you buy will give you 30 days of play, so you're really only paying about 5 bucks or so for the game (if you think about it that way, since a month's sub costs $14.95).
