Let's talk Ship Interiors.

This game needs to expand and build upon the strengths of the IP. Instead of reaching outwards in the search of complex game mechanical interactions, would it not be fitting to focus on the microcosmos itself, interior Starship operations and adventures?

From the possibilities of triggered events within defined areas of the ship, to Engine Room requests for upgrades, taking the form of external missions in the hunt for resources and ending in a visible interior change, there is a good range of possible activities within such a design sphere, without abandoning a good external range of content.

Fleets could benefit from special unlocks opening up areas of a ship like the Briefing Room, the Ten Forward, and for example the Hangar Bay, to respectively reflect upon the need for strategic sessions. social mingling, and the meeting and greeting itself.

The Captain might benefit from the Ready Room and Private Quarters, with personalization options, like the Fish Tank, as a prominent example, thus a longer career provides a richer environment, and more customization as time goes on.

Some areas could be used for triggered events, like the classic entity intrusion, or Crewmen going amok for whatever reason, and/or any other number of adventures, contained within predefined areas. Random events of this kind would best be approached in an optional fashion. Like having the ability to set the chance of it happening, or turning it on/off entirely. Some interior events could be linked to exterior locales. Like Crewmen going mad more often inside Nebulas for example.

Other areas could be dedicated to upgrades and research, ultimately granting tiny bonuses to the ship itself, but performed via mini-games within the ship. Such areas would be represented by the Sick Bay, Engine Room, and Scientific sections within the ship, like those associated with Astrophysics, or Deflector Dish operations.

For Fleets, such research could grant "global" benefits, but require resources and actions more suitable for a group of people, as opposed to the solitary need of one Captain.

Finally, Ship interiors could be used as an additional PvP stage, where boarding parties try to reach parts of the ship, to get to information, or kidnap someone in the spirit of task driven action, in addition to the baseline "kill them all" mentality.

I for one see this direction as loaded with potential. Thoughts?

    I agree with you bigtime.

The Star Ship is huge part of star trek. Thats what STO is missing. Every one I gave trail free pass said thats what was missing from the game, the Ships. I have come to the conclusion that with out ships interiors people are less willing to forgive STO for it's faults. Every ST fan wants to walk around their own Ship, it doesn't have to be perfect come on crypitc.

Somthing coming July but who knows I wouln't hold you breath.

I want that 23rd Century look - big bright colours and lots of chrome.

On a more personal note, I find black to be so draining ;)

Congratulations on creating the 137,482nd thread on this same subject!

However, you are a special snowflake and your thread has an ineffable quality that all of the others lack. I salute you sir!

And yeah, if you've been paying attention the developers have already said that they're working on ship interiors, and they've already said how they're going to be used. But it takes a bit of time. They can't simply wave their magic wands and make it appear tomorrow.

Random interior events could be made dynamic, by having them appear as alert icons, if you don't intervene, some time will pass, and a temporary negative effect takes place like reduced engine effectiveness etc.

Bothering to deal with such situations in person so to speak, would grant a positive bonus on the other hand, defined by the nature of the event. This on top of the usual rewards associated with mission completion. This would make "missions" linked to ship interiors viable as a game mechanic.

    Anyhow,

In conjunction with the release of Romulans, PvP missions with interiors in mind, might be made in order to let you sneak into enemy ships, and attempt to sabotage them in sector space. This might be viable, if we consider that the instance events will be static, but the outcome of such a mission can be transmitted to the real time ships.

The major obstacle is that this type of action probably have to occur in the open sectors as noted, since the Captain of the target ship otherwise will be unable to intervene. That kind of action might conceivably force the target Captain to let the ship drift or hang without guidance in space for a while.
