What happened to THIS Galaxy?

Cryptic seems to be struggling to get the Galaxy class fixed up to meet with our expectations.... but i wonder... what on earth happened to THIS Galaxy? Seen from the first gameplay trailer Cryptic released.

I mean it actually already shows a lot of how we want it, and even has some of the windows properly lined up!!!

Its possible they had to make performance concessions; the model may have been too taxing on the engine or minimum level hardware specs.

Yeah but then you make a lower poly model of the original, and not make an entirely new one that is practically wrong in every way.

Besides, models themselves arent as taxing anymore as they used to be.

Can you link to the original trailer for me? I don't remember that Galaxy being in the original ST trailer and would like to check it out again, and that's not the Galaxy shown on the earliest ST videos on the site.

It used to be on the site, but looks like its been taken down, cant find it either in the video section.
But it does seem to pre-date Atari's takeover of Cryptic.

And here you go, the original trailer and in HD ;)

It was a rendered scene probably. Maybe thats the reason ;)

Just look at the EvE trailers, and show me one single ship in the game that looks like the ships in the trailers.

That was a 3d model that the team stole from on the web, from Scifi-Art if i recall the discussion back on the scifi-meshes.com forums. Caused a big stink over there, so they changed it i guess, built it in house.

Actually that is gameplay footage. :p
And how on earth could they claim the Galaxy model was stolen? from that size its virtually impossible to judge something like that.

Personally, I wish they had done like DDO did. LoRes and HiRes versions of the game. My machine can handle it, give me texture models that are spot-on perfect to the shows and movies. We know they can be done... good lord, just look at some of the modding community work in the SFC and Armada games. Some of those models were indistinguishable from the shows. I'd love to see THOSE in game.

    I agree with ya!
Even Mad Doc software actually had the right idea in hiring MODDERS from the Bridge Commander community to do some of their ship models for Star Trek Legacy.

The same way that the artist whose star destroyer was used without permission in the original Forces Unleashed trailer.

Basically, when an artist builds a ship, they can generally tell it's theirs by the way it was made. Everyone's techniques are different, textures are slightly different or drawn a certain way, certain parts of a ship may be custom modified on the "official" design. It's complicated to explain it in detail to someone who doesn't really do the CG scene much.

    Presumptions arent you.

Point is, its really too dark and obscure a pic to be able to clearly identify such level of detail.

Many of the ships in the game aren't even close to the televised and movie products, The Akira is missing the hood vents on the saucer, the defiant is way to small, it's suppose to be slightly bigger than the Miranda and large enough to park in front of DS9 and not look like an ant to the station.

Actually its not the Defiants scale thats off, its DS9's scale thats way off.

Actually, no, my username is count23, not presumptions.

But while I don't know about this model, which is why i said "supposedly" in my first post. I do know for a fact that lucasarts borrowed a model without permission and later apologised/paid the artist who created it down the road. From what i head on these 3d art forums, the galaxy from the original gameplay was stolen, whether it was verified, i dont know.

actually... the video now looks like a complete diffrent game to me.

The Borg look diffrent somehow (more armor plating and stuff), there are at least 2 federation Ships that are not even in the game, the Sovereign Variant has something like a Torp Launcher between the Necelles (like in the Artwork),
The Galaxy Class Bridge has the CORRECT SCALE !!!
The Sun in the last shot looks better then anything in the game...
The Soveregin Variant that fires 3 Torps at the Borg, that is NOT "high yield torp 2" ... that thing is shooting way faster.
The Phaser Rifles at 1:13 have mounted FLASHLIGHTS !? AAAHHH!!! ME WANTS THAT!!!
Every exploding Ship has a lot of debree flying away, not just a small explosion.

either this is all *faked* CGI Stuff or the game has changed a friggen lot since they made this Video (and not all to the better).

and yeah that Galaxy Class looks a whole lot better.

uhmm if you have a bad computer graphic card then you cant see the massive detail in eve online ships. I know eve online ships are excellent in color and depth, so dont go their. Star trek online has been a lie from head start. They rushed it out the gate without getting much interested feedback from the headstart peolpe as well as the closed beta people. From the movie to the game their are alot of things missing such as the ship variants that are actually good looking. The ship to ship boarding party battles. I see plenty of ship variants and yet perhaps 2 of them made it to the actual game. if we as the players where given access to the ship yards i think we could create ships better then the designers. dont give us skins but actualy design schematics to build ships off of. modules on a ship that allow us to make a ship different from the inside even though it can look the same on the outside.

The Irony is that the Galaxy Class Bridge actually was the correct scale some time way back in closed beta, but the word is people complained to much about the camera and instead the bridges became gigantic.
My guess is that some of this stuff is before they decided to implement the ship customization since the bar between the naccelles on the sovy variant would not have been compatible with that.
Still its no excuse to replace them with sub-par models.
The borg though were also completely re-designed to the new look they have now later on.
