I'm sure almost everyone is aware of this little gem, burried as an unsuspecting mission reward at Lt.Cmdr level. It's hands-down the best engine ingame, up until blue Mk VIII or purple X's. Hell, I even kept it for a while on my Advanced Escort as an RA 5. Only when I found a lack of defense and speed troubling, I switched to a blue Combat Mk X.
Now, this really bothered me. A Mk IV engine able to keep it up until the very endgame and highest levels (for now, that is). With current rewarding system, especially at higher diff. levels wouldn't it be justified and logical to either find as a loot or get rewarded for a mission with an updated version, let's say Mk VIII or X? Let's say, as a reward for highest-lvl Captain episodes, those with Fire Caves, IIRC... or as a drop/loot in a STF.
I think something like this was planned, but due to other priorities, somehow got neglected. I mean, at the early levels, we get all kinds of special and unique loot, like this engine, Overcharged Sniper, Dual Cannons and Shields with special properties etc., while at the Captian and later levels we get - what, 1? - special item (that purple rifle I think I got for some of those True Way/Terran Empire episodes).
Cryptic, we need an updated version of Efficient Engines! Please!
(and while you're at it, why not add a few more special, unique high-level items?)
(and while you're at it, why not add a few more special, unique high-level items?)
For crafting? Yes, please.
I think, though, that the Efficient Impulse Engines would be overpowered even as Purple Mark X item. As it is now, you actually have to make a choice, because the speed and turning bonus allowed by higher tier engines is valuable.

Without trying to sound like a hater (I realize that's what I've been pegged as), but this is an example of how items are unfairly distributed in the game between Federation and Klingons. This item does not exist for Klingons as they have no storyline missions. There are plenty of other items that you will come across as a Federation player that a Klingon will never see.
Perhaps once Klingons receive quests, this will be remedied. But then it becomes a when/if scenario.

All in all, I agree with the original poster.
I agree with you wholehartedly, let's not forget our Klingon friends.
As for overpowered issue - we get this engine @ Lt.Cmdr level. At that time, it's a fantastic piece of equipment. As you progress through the levels, it's usefulness diminishes, and additionally you can achieve it's bonuses by increasing corresponding Efficiency and Performanse skills. Characters become more powerful, so wouldn't it make sense that our equipment also increases in quality?
Besides, now that everyone and their dog has full purple ships, don't ya think it would make it more interesting if they spice it up with similar unique items?
Don't even get me started about special item sets...
All my fed toons have this little jem on their ships. I fully agree that Klinks should be able to get little jems like this as well. At higher lvls like Cpt and Adm, there really isn't anything good for equipment that you can not buy.
Crafting is a joke in this game! It would be nice to be able to make MK X efficient engines or deflector arrays with deflector field upgrades and the like. Currently, crafting is useless as you can get much better items thru dailies or even exploration missions.

I agree and would like this gem to also exist on higher ranks.
I however just a little off-topic want to question why you went with combat impulse engines on your escort and not hyper impulse?
I'm curios after reading the thread and especially the post about this particular item not being distributed to the Klingons.
Is this item bound on pick up?
I can't remember if it is or not, but if it is not, level up a new character, get the item, but do not equip the item. Then set course for the nearest Starbase and go to a mail box, once at your destination, attempt to mail it to yourself.
Log out and log in to your KDF character, then retrieve the item from your mail box and then your KDF character will be able to use it.
However, that is only going to work if Efficient Impulse Engines are NOT bound on pick up.
So just a thought, anyone with the required info, please post and also, please check out the following linked thread, where I invented my own Impulse Engines.

If you would like to invent your own items, post in that thread and maybe you'll see your item in game one day.
IIRC, it's BoP. Not sure though.
That's awesome thread, and some of the suggestions in it are beyond good. I especially like your version of Efficient engines. Not overpowered, but just awesome.
@Ayupan: I use blue Combats Mk X with [Turn]x2 bonus, because my engine power mostly sits at 25, which, after the skills et all calculations amounts for a total of 42. Combat engines are more efficient (i.e. give more speed) under 60 power, while Hyper Impulse above 60.
That's a shame and more than likely intentional, so I guess they knew what they were doing with this gem!
My bet is, that it's one item to give us a hint of things to come, there's quite a number of really cool ideas in teh thread I linked up top, someone posted a cool idea for items that go into device slots, which we could use a lot more of.
I think we could do with having batteries upgrade to uncomon and rare as well, perhaps using Memory Alpha.
What's with everyone suddenly loving the word "gem"
Frankly I don't see why everyone's so hot over this, 5 more power doesn't seem like a good trade-off for being sluggishly slow and turning like a turtle in molasses as soon as you hit captain (or commander in some cases even)

Regardless, this is still the best Impulse engine available for a Lt. Cmdr character...
In PVE the lack of speed tends not to be an issue. It's your time in game. You're not losing much in terms of speed that will really affect PVE. So it takes you a moment longer between squadrons of Undine cruisers? That may come in handy as it gets you closer to one of your powers like RSP refreshing in time for the next fight.
In PVP, yeah, this engine can get swapped out a lot. Because there it's more of an issue.
TURNING speed however ...
Since the game launched they have added a lot of things that increase turning speed. Like the base boost to cruisers. The Tier 2 tactical skill (Combat Manuevers or whatever it's called), and the 1.1 change to engine speed affecting turning speed.
What this has done is made it so that cruisers, the ship most sluggish is now able to turn faster than its intertia allows.
Which is the topic of many a thread. The Tokyo Drift joke that keeps going around.
So if you're in a cruiser, and you already turn too fast for your intertia to compensate, you lose nothing by equipping this engine.
You may choose a different one in terms of PVP, but again you may not have to. It all depends. But in PVE ... it's not so cut and dry. Especially where turning is concerned.

I guess it depends on your play style and what's important to you. I'm still using it at captain with a science vessel...it works great for me.
Just wanted to fix that one part, but as of this instant in time, yes... the Klingons don't have as much episodic content.
M-hmm ... thank you for being helpful. However, this doesn't change the issue at hand presently.
In addition to the Efficient Impulse Engines, there are a number of rare items attainable only through mission reward (a whatchamacallit mega-ship shield iirc). We can only hope that when Klingons do receive storyline missions that they will be able to finally achieve parity with their Federation brethren either via the same items, or their own set of unique Bind on Pickup items.
To be clear, I don't think this was an intensional imbalance.

you get this idea that there are great diverse weapons/tech out there...then that gets crused as you learn the game.

How can they make a klingon version when they have Qo'noS on IGNORE?

Gem is excitement. Gem is adventure. Glamour and glitter, fashion and fame. Gem is outrageous. Truly, truly outrageous.
sounds utterly fabulous
