When Star Trek online was first announced i was "STOked" honestly i was never so excited to play a game before i even became a lifetimer straight away although admittedly most people could debate whether or not this was a mistake at this point of the game when pretty much all signs are now pointing to inevitable critical failure.
However i can honestly say that i don't actually regret it at least not yet i still "play" doing dailies with my RA5 and leveling my two alts but one thing i did say at the time i subscribed and still hold true is this
"Star trek online has until Star wars the old republic to get me hooked"
now thats still quite a while away maybe even over a year and i doubt anyone could say that i'm not giving STO it's fair chance so i'm wondering how many people have the same sentiments when TOR comes out will their be a great exodus from STO to TOR (assuming theres even enough players in STO to call any exodus great ) will there be a Great star wars trek?

A lot of people say this. Heck, the two friends who finally twisted my arm enough to get me to try this game ... say this.
I stay cagey about it.
There's always the chance both games are fun. And worth playing at the same time.
And there's also the chance that TOR suffers some problems and ends up disappointing me as much as the last star wars MMO did.
So I simply try to focus on STO being Star Trek and having fun with what it gives me.
For those of us who have been around long enough, we remember when Shadowbane was supposed to decimate EQ's population.
Bottom line is, if STO can't bring in new players long before SWTOR's release, their fate will already be sealed. If Seasons 2 and 3 make subscribers out of some of the million or so former players they have, they'll do fine even if SWTOR is everything it's built up to be. It's a large market, even in the sci-fi genre, and there's room for more than one to succeed.
Well my ultimate hope is that STO ROCKS by then i prefer star trek to star wars and want to be playing this game this time next year (if only to get my monies worth )and i certainly haven't ruled out the idea of lifetimeing both games since when you get to endgame theres not a whole lot to keep you occupied should you be fortunate enough to have such ample free time.
like i said currently i do my daily and grind one of my alts for an hour maybe two and thats it at the mo wih a weekend raid or two
Thats actually why uI bought the lifetime sub for this. Because by the time TOR comes out the lifetime will have paid for itself and then some. If TOR happens to have a lifetime sub I'll get that also. Then I'll be able to play both whenever I want for a long time. Either way, I'll be playing TOR when it comes out but still have lifetime for STO. So planned it accordingly. My mmo bug should be good for the next 5 years at least.
I subscribe to 7 MMOs and I'm currently playtesting 2 more (cough, cough). I'll have no problem adding SWTOR to the list if I find I like it enough to do so. SWTOR isn't going to change how I feel about STO or any of the other 6. As a power-game it's always about having enough variety around to keep me from getting too bored with any one thing.
I'm passing on SWTOR at least until they actually put the Wars in the Stars. That and experience has shown me that it's best to wait on overhyped games. Yes Bioware has good games but this is also their first MMO so they've got their work cut out for them.
With all the hype about TOR, it's going to be a minor miracle -- but not impossible, this IS Bioware -- if they can live up to even some of it. Hype not only sells a game, it can KILL it if there's too much.
But they supposedly need 'one million subscribers' to break even. I don't quite know how that works out -- a million monthlies over a year? A million lifetime subscriptions? A million people paying a month's subscription? It doesn't help that they're currently owned by the eight-hundred pound senile gorilla that is EA, and will be gutted in an instant if they fail to please their corporate overlords.
I don't know. At this point they're two very different games -- I get the impression SWTOR is going for a more cinematic experience which is going to be a challenge with group play. They have some extremely high production standards there and it's going to be... interesting... to see how it plays out. And if they can keep it going.

That "one million subscribers" line was based on one blogger's cost analysis and expects them to break even within a year on subs alone, if I remember correctly. I'm sure they have a huge budget and are expecting a large number of subscriptions, but anyone who tells you that they know their business plan is most assuredly talking out of their...Horta.
The Star Wars game should be pretty good, but I simply prefer trek to Star Wars. I spent 3.5 years or so developing with the same toolset it now uses (heroengine).
And I can confidently answer that ship combat would be no problem... for a demo years ago Simutronics made a helicopter flying around with full control. It's not any harder than making a guy walk around, really.
"Star trek online has until Star wars the old republic to get me hooked"
That's all the time Cryptic need. By the time that game is released they'll have made enough to justify expenses. They'll have made a good enough profit. They made the game on a second hand engine in a two year window..... box sales alone probably made the money back and some. We are just the cream being skimmed off milk
I like Star Wars but not as much as Star Trek. I played SWG for years. It even took me a good while to cancel after NGE.
That being said, I'm kinda tired of SW in a MMO setting. Since all archetypes have to be balanced Jedi are essentially wielding Glowing Nerf Bats. Your powers are cool in concept but never as deadly as what's shown in the films.
"You don't know the POWERRRR of the Dark Side!"
Well sure I do! Bounty Hunters, Smugglers, Commandos, Spies and Officers all have equal power.
So SWTOR never really interested me. Single player SW games are better in my opinion.
TOR already has problems. The Mando Retcon, Smugglers not being a neutral faction, no space combat. Also EA says they need a million subs to break even. In any case, there is enough people who like Star Trek to keep STO going. Some people will play both, which is one of the reasons I bought a lifetime and some will play TOR and not like it etc.

Quite frankly you can have your TOR, I really dont plan on even looking at it. Why? Same reason it took till the movies came out of VHS for me to see them. However I have seen every Star Trek movie in the theater. Simple I'm a trekkie, always been a trekkie always will be. I've watch the show since it was on TV in the 60's. I've read novels, seen series (not that I enjoyed them all, i never cared for Voyager), was upset when we were cheated out of the 5th seasons of Enterprise, possibly one of the best casts I've seen. But Star Wars? Just a movie, a neat game, but for me that's all. STO, I've waited all my life for something like this. But this game to me is more than just pixels on the screen to get my attention. MMORPG.. repeat RPG, its a role playing game. Which means that some of the draw to the game has to come from you the gamer. Want to make a game more exciting, then role play while you do the missions. I'll even give and example. My ship shot to hell, only 5% hull left I finished the mission, instead of just fixing the ship I put out and SOS, and some role players came to my aid. Together we took on a fleet action as part of "story". We fought, we won, we had a celebration afterwards, We flew all the way back to the spacestation to "repair" my ship. yes it was repaired way before that, but we role played it out anyway. It was fun. As long as there are role players, the game for me will go on.
Of course, instead of just signing away that they have to grab you befroe the next MMO comes out, maybe you should make suggestions, discussioin of why you think the game is going to fail. Why are some people arrogant enough to think that just because they are not enjoying the game that others are not? Of course to play RPG well, people must have imagination, and maybe that's what's lacking. People dont want to use thier brians for anything other than entertain me....
While I am a HUGE fan of this game, I do see shortcomings, one to mention I hate the away missions, they put me to sleep. They just dont hold my attention, at least when I'm in my ship fighting other ships, I can get a challenge out of it. Plus, for me space combat is just fun, sure I'de like to scan the ships, find the weak spots hit them where it will hurt the most. But I also have programmed games, I know there are limitations to everything, you have to keep the scope of the game to something manageable. I beliave that all games that have enough response, not just *****ing or venting but good reponse that the programmers can actually understand why someone might not want to play anymore, can make the difference. What they believe is exciting, might not be exciting to us, but how do they know if we dont give them specifics. Ground missions suck, why? they are boring, we relaly dont get to explore anything, we dont get hey captian I scanned something over there that seems wrong, should we check it/. No we get I see there is a radiation for this artifact, its at a bad freq and causeing cancer we need to retune them.. run aaround retune then get, the mission is done back to the ship, and next....
I will get off my soap box now... thanks for listening...
I would't worry about TOR. If somthing were to happend to TOR all the Star Wars fans would mail Lucas film to the death, to get George Lucas to save the MMO for the fans sake I mean Lucas have enough money to make a 100 TOR's MMO...I know he dident pay for TOR, just saying, it could happend
I dont care what EA says about TOR. As long as Lucas arts are in on this, EA will never try enforce they're opinion on the game. Anyways i dont think they will be having any problem getting one million paying customers the first year alone. I know i will be buying a lifetime for TOR if they have one when the time is comming.:)

have you ever heard of sony online entertainment? more commonly known as SOE, the company that took a perfectly good mmo and sank it, more than once. star wars galaxies wasnt cared for by lucas arts, any more than tor will be. they get their cut and royalties, make a fortune, and care little beyond that. and lucas himself? hes as greedy as that chick who "retired" from writing certain childrens books several times, but just cant stay away from the money even though shes drowning in it already.
tbh, i have no interest in tor anymore. after the classes were announced, and seeing the combat videos. if i have to pay to play a game like that, ill reinstall kotor 1 and 2 im not the biggest fan of the kotor games.
tor is biowares first mmo, its overhyped, and wont launch as perfect as everyone seems to think. and its a fair toss of a coin as to who is worse: die hard trek fans, or die hard star wars fans. too hard to call. either way i anticipate the tor forums being a right mess at launch, kind of like these ones were :P
so feel free to wait on tor, while complaining this game sucks so bad, because im sure that it wont be all its cracked up to be.
When Star Trek online was first announced i was "STOked" honestly i was never so excited to play a game before i even became a lifetimer straight away although admittedly most people could debate whether or not this was a mistake at this point of the game when pretty much all signs are now pointing to inevitable critical failure.

For me Star Trek and Star Wars are two entirely different universes. I don't mean in the obvious way. I'm talking about what kind of characters I would play in both games.
In Star Trek, I play a Federation Officer...pretty straight laced, perhaps the only break from your typical Star Trek Fed officer is that I love to fight.
In Star Wars, I would look to play a criminal. Smuggler was my choice in Star Wars Galaxies, and I loved the systme of making and using spices (I was jacked up almost all of the time).
In other games, like EVE, I tended to play pirates or mercenaries. Much like Star Wars, I leaned towards the darker side of human motivations.
So, if and when SWTOR is released, it won't necessarily pull me away from STO, because I will be looking for it to add to my playing not exchange it.
I've been retired for nearly 10 years - outside of some consulting. My wife still works, she has 3 years before she can get her retirement, and our children are gone most of the day at school. Thus I have the house to myself some 8-9 hours a day. MMO gaming is more interesting then watching Soaps and Court daytime television.

Oh, so it wasn't a quote from EA/Bioware? Thanks for clarifying that, I was wondering why the heck they would say something like that!
From what I can tell, TOR is a single player came with a chatroom attached.
And when Bioware finishes it sometime in 2146, after it is "perfect", I might try it. If I'm still alive....

You are a wise man.
Right now, everyone is simply projecting whatever they want onto it.
Personally, I don't see any ship combat in there...

hell i can see someone selling it for 10 bucks and say "please take it...please!!!!"
No point in worrying about it now.
The numbers I keep seeing associated with this game ... as well as its "success" and "failure" ... all keep coming from bloggers as well.
So obviously it falls under the internet rules of truth.
If it's on the internet ... it must be.

It's not like any of this is within reach at present time, not unlike so many other objects of desire... Availability is the Reaper of Passion.
