I think STO should try and implement some of their ship customization engines. In Spore you can design every part of our ship. You have hundreds of different adjustable shapes/items. You can basically make your ship look like anything. In Spore I have to date and I haven't played in months 35ish Star Trek ships and every last one of them looks completely different than the rest.
I don't think people should be able to make their ship look like anything (Like a flying woman), but I think they should open the customization capabilities of their shipyard. Every ship at every tier and depending on your profession (Tactical, Engineering, or Science) all look the same. Yesterday I was about to leave Sol Station and at the exit point there was five Fleet Escorts around me and we all looked the same.
Ship designs are governed by CBS, as we learned from the Nomad incident. They dictate how ships should look in the game, which make some sense. Federation ships have a specific style, as do the other Factions. Hopefully we'll see more ship variants in the future to add a little more customization to the process.

I was thinking when I first heard of this game there would be more customization options for sure. Not just working parts but how the ships actually look as well.

Prior to going into Closed Beta I actually expected there to be less. I assumed you'd get 1 classic vessel choice per grade and that was it. The fact that I can mix-and-match pieces between 3, or more, ships came as quite a surprise to me.

Yeah it's not bad, don't get me wrong. I just had something different floating around in my brain.
I'm just sick of every ship in every sector are basically the same. When I was Captain I can't tell you how many Enterprise looking ships I came across they were and are everywhere.
I'm a Tactical Officer now in a Fleet Escort and love the ship capabilities, but hate the look of them, even if I move over to the Advanced Escort it not that much better.
one of the biggest problems with this game is the fact its called star trek. they would have had so much more freedom if it was called star fighter or something and they could just make up anything the wanted. there are times i wish they had just made a brand new sci-fi universe and just let their own imagination go
im impressed with the level of customization that we have but they can only go so far under the limitation of the star trek name imposed by the guys in suits
some customisations can go too far if allowed to run loose, i remember i once used spore to make a pinkaprise to make my point. in sto i dissapeared for a month and when i returned they'd changed various effects and my prometheus was pink, i almost messed my pants.
i've found i can make some rather unique looking ships with the options given to me, if they ever do a MVAM for the prommy i've got a setup saved that'll look awesome in seperate pieces. failing that my only wish is that they'd give us the option to take two of the nacelles off four nacelled ships, i've also got a few setups that'd look good one way or the other but not with both.

You really think CBS makes video games? They sell a license to use the IP and walk away. They don't get involved with making the game.

Unfortunately you are wrong. The reason that is unfortunate is because if you were right, we would have all the ships we wanted from the shows and movies. However the Devs have told us that they have still not gotten permission to use certain ones, meaning CBS IS still involved in the decisions.

You'll forgive me if I need more than "the devs said" as concrete proof that CBS is holding them back.

Actually, I do remember reading CBS does have the last say on the ship designs. Even thought they are the ugliest designs I have ever seen in the Star Trek World, CBS holds the rights to their design.

As someone who's been involved with a few licensing deals in his life I'll just say you have no idea what you're talking about and leave it at that. Companies are very protective of the bread-and-butter IPs.
I'd be happy if our ship exterior would change slightly depending on the component used. It'd be cool to be able to distinguish the type of engine from its signature/shape or the weapon types by where they are mounted/shaped.

Again, I'd have to read that from somewhere besides Cryptic.
The reason I have a very hard time believing this is that I played Star Fleet Command, a game licensed BY Paramount/CBS. This game included dozens and dozens ship variants based off of races that didn't even exist in the Star Trek world and were only detailed in Star Fleet Battles, not to mention a slough of Federation ships that didn't exist. Now, it can be said that they DID get permission from Amarillo Design to use the Star Fleet Battles ships, but then Amarillo Design had to get permission from CBS at some point. This just leads me to think that something as simple as a ship design isn't something they would nitpick about in the sale of the IP.
I can't even imagine seeing that in the contract, although it would be pretty amusing.

Really? Then please explain Star Fleet Command do me. Explain how those contracts are worded, if you dont mind.
"You are allowed to use ______ but not _______"? Really? Do they go through each and every ship design in the Star Trek universe and say "You can use that one, that one, that one, that one, not that one, that one"?
Seems really silly to me, and more likely just an excuse.

You really think CBS, the owner of an IP the magnitude of "Star Trek" would simply write a blank check to another company to go off and do ANYTHING they like with it - creatively, visually, artistically - and be perfectly comfortable having no oversight or say at all in what happens?
Again, I'd have to read that from somewhere besides Cryptic.

I too played SFC, and it was a great series. However, if you are not aware the "Star Fleet Battles" universe is actually a DIFFERENT universe than the universe the shows/movies are set in(kind of like an alternate timeline). For more information on that, see this article:
So its entirely possible that CBS gave them free reign(or alot more freedom anyway) to explore than universe, since its not the same one as the canon universe. However, if you will recall, SFC3 was set in the canon universe, and I dont recall them havine ANY of the "variants" that the previous games had...at least not for the Feds anyway.

Just so you know; I'm LOLing at you right now.
How else do you explain this crapfest if you think CBS does video game quality control? I've yet to see one piece of proof that CBS has kept Cryptic from implementing ship customizations. Just developers claims of specific designs, and immature rants from various internet experts.
You guys are blaming CBS for TRIBBLE they have nothing to do with.

And yet - it is actually what happens.
You never know, one day you may find yourself in a job where you have to work with other businesses who have things you want - and you might just learn how controlling they can actually be.
I hope they can provide something besides a developers post.
LMAO! Are you kidding? What do you expect to see, someone from CBS posting on the forums? Seriously, I understand you dont like being wrong; nobody does. But saying that the Devs posts arent valid is just silly man

all ships are to look the same. they can have different decals, names, call signs and minor changes to the paint but ships are to look the same in general. examples are Voyager" message in a bottle." and DS9 "sacifice of angels" Thats canon. your the captain of a ship but you belong to starfleet. The millitary arm of the federation. consider Starfleet command as CBS and cryptic along with the star trek community the federation council. maybe we should be talking to CBS, asking to release the other star trek ships. What we can do to cryptic is ask that we be allowed to break off from star fleet. become a civilian contractor doing minning and surveying.

They still had the same races in SFC3, and as I said in my post (you seem to really like to gloss over) I know it was based off of Star Fleet Battles. Who ALSO got a license from CBS to use the IP and expand on it.
I still fail to see how any of this could affect ship customizations.

Ship "classes" are kind of meant to look the same.

What do you expect? Starfleet is essentially a space navy, so of course most of their ships are going to look very similar.
