... it wasn't quite enough to hook me. I enjoyed the experience and the game was beginning to appeal to me to the point I would consider buying it but it just didn't go into enough depth to show me what might possibly lie ahead.
I'm one of those people that played WoW for over 3 years. I'm also one of those people that was lured into doing so by the "1 week free trial". With the WoW trial I got to the point where I saw what the game could have in store, was taking pride in my "toon"... and quite literally, got bit by the bug. Granted 3 years later I hated Blizzard for it being "their" game, and not those that played it, but none-the-less after 3 years and *** dollars later I enjoyed the experience.
If STO is a good MMO the demo does not allow you to get far enough into the game to know so. It leads the logical mind to believe that it would not... otherwise why wouldn't the powers that be let you taste it?
From the community I would love it if people could inform me (and others) as to what the demo overlooks, both in terms of description but also in terms of content and player interaction. It really seemed like a 1 player game. From Cryptic I would love for them to show people how good it is, not tease them into believing that it "might" be.
Is the demo a standalone application or is it actually a very limited login to the servers?
If the former, they'd do themselves a service with adding a premade higher-level character or two and include one or two of the later missions.
As far as the game quality... well, it really does get better, and gameplay opens up a lot once you get your next ship. That just takes way too long relative to the rest of leveling in the opinion of many people. The actual missions (if you read the text) are mostly more interesting than the Azura rescue but, on the other hand, the only thing that changes about the gameplay is that you and your crew get expanded power and ship options and overall capacity. And I must reiterate the only thing - in the Azura rescue, you fight every Orion space NPC type you ever will and are likely to fight almost every type of Orion on the ground (I think it's just missing the two types of girls). As you progress through the game, you'll keep meeting factions with equally tiny NPC libraries, but these Orion ships you're fighting now will be the same Orion ships you fight in an Orion mission at cap. And yes, this is one of my main pet peeves with the game.

I'd have to know what's in the demo to know what it overlooks. If it's just the Tutorial mission, then it overlooks quite a bit. And only gives you the basics.
But if you're looking for a WoW type of experience, this game isn't really designed that way. Think of this as MMO-lite. It's got elements geared more towards console players than hardcore end-game Warcraft raiding types.
I'm not trying to sell you on this game. It's you who played the demo. If it wasn't clicking with you ... not sure I can get it to click with you.
It's the Tutorial and then the Azura rescue - almost nothing at all. Especially to get any appreciation of the development into gameplay beyond the utter basics (which I've always considered a weakness in the game's design - moving into the meat of character development too slowly and then ratcheting things up to go by too quickly).
I kindof disagree here... I downloaded the whole 8gb demo and I AM disappointed with such a short play time, but at the same time it got me hooked enough to order the game
It gave me enough to understand the ground and space mechanics. The only thing I was left wondering over was the skill system. Not really sure what some of the skills do
Don't worry, even once you cap at RA5 you'll still just be making educated guesses. Or mislead ones, with some of the inaccuracies that still appear in the skills window.
Haha, at least Im not as daft as I originally though I thought there was something I was clearly missing in trying to understand those skills. Thanks though.
Looking forward to getting in some actual gametime tonight....

As much as I *****, the game really does get more fun at the higher tiers as the number of power options you have improves. So if you're enjoying the combat system now, there's a lot to look forward to.
I gave a friend a referal and his conclusion was the same - theres simply not enough offered with just the tutorial and uss azura mission to make an informed decision on if the game is worth actually buying.
He has not commited to buy for this reason so it's a potential sale in limbo because they simply did not offer enough of the game to look at.
I'd have to suggest that they broaden the demo a bit to take people up to say level 5 or at least include the P'Jem mission in with the demo as I feel this was the first mission with any real story to it and would give a much better impression of the game than uss azura which is basically a quick space fight and a dark corridor.
Yeap, they for sure need to allow people to do just a bit more with the demo/referral. I think I've got one friend that likes it... but can't really decide based on that little of game play. Can't say as I blame them either.
Thanks a lot for all the intelligent replies, I went ahead and bought it. The 30$ price tag pushed me over the edge figuring even if I only play it for a couple of months I can do so for the price of a regular game. Here's hoping end-game and multiplayer co-op isn't a let down.

There are no raids in this game. End-game consists of daily exploration missions. Daily PVP missions. Special Task Forces which are 5-man content. Fleet Actions which are in dire need of a tweak. And Sector Defense which helps you accrue enough starfleet merits to afford things like skill tree respecs and changing your ship's name.

The demo is not enough to excite people' It's a taste ( a taste of things not repeated ) but at the end of the day it's just an hour of your time.
The previous 5 day buddy key was a mistake because it was soon realised that a dedicated player could get to level cap in 5 days and have nothing left to do, meaning a sub was a waste of time. This is why I think the demo will now never be more than it is. Which is not enough.
It's a shame that right after the demo the game becomes 'repeat these 3 types of mission until you reach Admiral'
I must say, the tutorial was more fun than the rest of the game following it in my opinion. So, do not get your expectations too high, because the missions are nowhere as near as varied and well done from there on out save a rare few.

Oh, remember to group up with people so it doesn't feel like a bore. Or play some music from Winamp/Itunes.
I thought the demo was really short too. It's like reading the first few sentences on the back cover of a book. Why would I fork over money for a mystery?

Because Atari thinks your an idiot, just like the rest of us... But in reality its not a bad game if you pace yourself. And I mean pace yourself as in 2 hours a night.
I would say Level cap at Lt-5 (Lt.6 turns the game off). This was where the klingons activate, so the code is already in the game. Would be easy to do.

Maybe free play or 14 day trial with level cap at Lt 10?(just before Lt.Cmdr promotion)
