There are some really impressive scenes in the game, and I'm hoping that developers make more use of breathtaking vistas. One example of this is during the tutorial, actually, when you're fighting Borg at the nav beacons. The asteroid belt combined with the nebula was just stunning. There are plenty of moments like that on the ground, as well. I'm thinking mostly of the huge tree-things during The Cure. But I think that more gigantic, awesome-looking stuff in both ground and space would do the game well.

Yep gotta love some of those great looking views, but one thing does bug me... the closest stars are incredibly dim (such as the sun when in the Sol System outside Starbase 01).

When your camera faces them, it should be the brightest thing on your screen. I couldn't even figure out where the Sun was until I realized it was that dim orange thing that was barely radiating any light.

I really don't get this. I see a lot of people talking about superb graphics but I'm not so impressed. I'm an artist and all the space backgrounds are a number of generic digital space paintings wrapped around the shoebox space ( it's why things in the distance distort as you move, it's like being in a hamster ball painted with clouds and stars.

The paintings themselves are run of the mill. I can and have churned that kind of generic stuff out by the hour.

I guess it can be impressive the way it is implemented but to me it's just another backdrop.

As for the ground graphics, well I think they are just poor and I run it all full spec, high end.

I feel it's more art direction that just pure graphics like Crysis. For me I like them because when you find a place it's generally such a perfect archtype of that place. Like the white sandy beach, or the sand blasted desert where you can barely make out the dim sun through the storm as you feel around with your tricorder for the crashed satalites in the deep vallies. I dunno, a lot of the areas are crappy and generic but some of them are truly stunning in my opinion.

Pretty much any game set in space looks good to me... Space is just awesome looking. However you are right about the ground stuff... it is just as good if not slightly worse as any modern game out there.

if you want to see beautiful space combat cone well and on a fraction of the money Cryptic were given, here's how the Russians do it.

Please try and watch it 720p full screen for full effect.

Star Wolves 3 has a lot of issues related to translation but despite it's faults it's a cracker of a story driven space sim and a lot cheaper than some :)

Do you know if that was their own engine of if they bought a licence for it?

they made it themselves. It's the third game ( the first was fun but crude, the second was awful because they over thought it but this one is kinda cool and it looks great. But it's all their own work on a shoestring.
