This is just me ranting BUT it would be nice if cryptic would revamp/control the way the exchange works. i think its pretty ridiculous how some people have priced their goods. i mean asking someone to pay 200+% over the value of an item is insane and needs to get controlled.
i understand the whole law of supply and demand, and yes some items are a premium because theyre rare or cause a lot of damage or whatever. but charging 25K for a Mark V Quantum Torpedo (when it's value is only 7K) is pretty ridiculous, especially since it's listed as a common ship weapon, not rare or very rare. chances are you'll run into one for free anyway. so you go and sell your swag for ridiculous sums of credits, it's not like those credits actually translate to real money. and on top of all that you end up clogging the exchange, i went through 6 pages of people pricing their quantum torpedos at over 50K. so you have this HUGE amount of supply of items in the exchange but no ones buying because theres no point in spending that amount of money on only 1 item. so what's the real point anyway.
this is just a suggestion but maybe limiting the way goods are priced would make HUGE strides in controlling the exchange. maybe only allowing an item to be priced only 50-70% above it's value. the replicators only give you maybe 20-30% of an item's value, if that.
ok im done ranting, just think something has to be done
yea, 25K was the cheapest. ive bought and sold on the exchange so i know how it works. i just think it ridiculous to price things at such ridiculous levels.

I normally price them a little bit less then what they are wroth. ( since they are sold to vendors for half off, I would still make a profit. I shoot for numbers divisible by 10.

When the guy that was holding the gun to your head (to force you to buy from the Exchange) left your house, did you call the cops before you made this post? Or after?

Play with what you find. You will do just fine. Besides, the items you are talking about are worthless because they will be obsolete soon after you acquire them.
You can get decent leveling gear doing explore missions and buying the even numbered gear at the badge vendors at the Shipyard in Sol Starbase. After you hit level cap do your dailies for your Purple Mark X gear.
There is really no need to buy anything off the exchange, other than Bridge Officers and crafting supplies if you are in to that.

I called them after, but they asked who the hell has the name Pasquatic. I told them "I don't know, his parents must have been on crack or something"

As with every economy in the world, it's based on what people are willing to pay. Beyond that, why even buy Quantums when you get get them for free simply by running Exploration missions? 6 Exploration Missions will get you 2 MK VI [Acc] Quantums for free.
Also, if you look into it, most items can be bought from vendors throughout the game who sell items at list price. Doing a few exploration missions when you rank also doesn't hurt. I use them to get uncommon ship weapons for exploration badges.
it's not like EC are hard to come by and if you can't afford to equip your new ship with money then do the exploration grind for the badges and get your blue/green gear that way.
I'm impatient, soon as I got my captain ship I equipped it with MkVIII blues and greens from the exchange. I only spent around 500k for the whole refit and am using it all at Cap 5. 50k for items is not at all expensive.
Some people think that when they have MMO money in their pocket that must spend it. Seriously, you don't have to buy anything from the Exchange. I never do and never have a problem.

You don't * looks at all the TRIBBLE at his house on talus ( SWG ) * I wish I would of know that....
But for some ( I know for me ) it can be a problem, you can get in to the habit of wanting to spend on cool stuff. it hasn't been to bad for me here, mostly due to the fact that I sale more stuff then I buy, but also the fact that I can't buy silly decorations for my ship. ( this mite change with ship interiors )
It is def all about supply and demand. I recently sold a pair of Mk 8 Transphasic Torps for 125K worth of energy credits. I have sold a lot of my older Quantums at higher then average prices as well. You can just as easily go on 6 explorer missions and get whatever weapons you want from the weapons requisition office a space dock. I have always done this and sold a lot of my stuff for a profit. People will pay it....

OMG don't mention SWG house, I filled up 3 bunkers with stuff, 2 houses and 4 storage sheds.

You should go work for the government. They need anti-free-markets people like yourself.
I lolled a little after reading this opening post. I thought the complaints were going to be in regards to the 10+million EC VR BOffs with the sought after skills or the 8-20 million EC useful +30 science consoles, not a measely 25K...
As a quick protip, Quantum torpedo launcher Uncommons of MK IV, VI, VIII and X all exist from badges of exploration. Just go upstairs in the shipyard and talk to the NPCs on the left side of the room. Do those to save a ton of cash for the big purchases you'll (want to / wish you could) make when you hit RA 5.
I have over 100k EC, and I just hit Lt Commander on my first character. Money doesn't seem that hard to make, and in the mid/low levels there's very little you could spend your money on that's actually going to make a difference.
So either waste it on over priced stuff from the exchange, or save it to buy over priced stuff later on, or just collect it like dust.
Either way you do it is fine. If you don't want to grind the exploration missions, then pay on the exchange. If you don't want to pay the EC, then go explore.
I hate to beat a dead horse, but it really is supply and demand. The fewer you see of a particular item for sale (especially one in high demand like QTs), expect to see higher prices. When you see 400 pages of an item for sale that is not particularly in high demand, expect to get it cheaper than its actual value, as most people will sell it at a little bit over its resale value.
Can anyone tell me what Vice President Bush called this? Anyone? Something d-o-o economics?
(I know its not actually "Voodoo Economics" but I couldn't resist the movie reference )
...i just think it ridiculous to price things at such ridiculous levels.
couldn't have agreed with you more. the devs really need to get this under control cuz rare/very rare are severely outrageous, now that very rare Klingon weapons are available.
Well, as a new player who just reached level 11... I tried to visit the exchange to buy a common lvl 3 dual phaser beam... and the cheapest I saw was 35k credits.. for a basic, white weapon... there were like 200 of them... all of the, 35k - 400k price range... all for rank Lt. Commander.
As a new player... I have nowhere near this amount of money.. when I reached level 11, I just barely had 19,000 credits (and I haven't bought anything.. been saving credits).
I didn't bother buying since i figured I'd eventually get something from a mission reward or maybe there's exploration rewards with badges (haven't checked yet.. but those badges can be a pain to grind).
I don't get it.. when I find items, I put them up for their base price.. this way I get more than just scrapping it in the replicator... and it's easily affordable to people like me in me level range.
It's not encouraging to me as a new player, who hasn't had the benefit of months of play time, to see prices for the low-level common items on the exchange.. I'll never be able to afford any of them because people price it with the assumption that everybody has an alt with a billion credits or something.
That is the best way to deal with it, simply don't buy them and simple economics will handle the rest. I don't think anyone wants Cryptic to step in and put caps on trading. When that happens, it will cease to be a player run economy. When items fail to sell because of inflated prices, the prices will drop, but as long as people continue to refinance their ships in order to pay 10 times what an item should be worth, people will continue to gouge.

You can get dual phaser beam banks and single phaser beam arrays from the exploration vendors upstairs in the shipyard.... just do some exploration missions for the appropiate order badges..

God it's distressing.
If you're not going to tackle exploration missions for badges, you can buzz over to starbase 39-Sierra (Sierra system, Alpha Centauri sector block) and purchase common mark III ship elements there.

it's called market manipulation and speculation. People buy your 'normal' price items up and relist it at extreme pricing.
Cryptic have done pretty mcuh all they can by adding the sort-by-price feature. They cant really control the economy too much without making huge changes.
The fact of the matter is that the market controls prices, i.e. you and I decide how much something is worth when we buy and sell. Prices are only high relative to the artificially fixed prices at NPC vendors.
I think inflation in MMOs in inevitable, since resources are infinite. Cryptic could perhaps alleviate this by making energy credits more valuable, either by giving it more uses (allow us to spend them in more stores) or by adding taxes. A sales tax on the exchange would work quite well.
You can play this game without ever using the exchange, you don't NEED anything people put up for sale. look at the prices and laugh, then go explore and get your stuff for free.

What if I want me a TCD subspace infuser, or electroceramic hull plating? Do I just wait until they drop? Since its random you could theoretically NEVER get those from drops.
I'm glad you can't buy everything from NPC vendors, as it adds an extra element to the game.
