Cannon procs... please end my confusion

Can anyone give me a definite answer on how procs on cannons work?

Is the proc % based on every attack or every shot?

As in would a dual cannon proc more often than dual heavy since it fires 1 more set of bolts?
Or is a turret's relatively low dps counteracted by a higher proc chance due to it firing many bolts?
And if that is the case would rapid fire provide a much larger proc chance?

Or do you just get 2.5% per volley regardless of the amount of bolts it contains?

If the game is balanced in this respect (which I am relatively sure it is) its based on per attack, not shot or damage proc.

Let me set it up like this:

My 4xAP cannons on 80% Energy with 4xUncommon AP mags, do 1219 DPS (if memory serves), and they fire about 3 or 4 shots in each volley... Now if that were 1219 pr shot pr cannon I would do 19504 Damage in each volley, effectively allowing me to take out enemies in 3 vollies or less.

So I am fairly confident that It is Damage pr Volley and not pr shot.

    thanks for the input guys

anazonda I was talking about the proc not the dps like the phaser 2.5% chance to take out a subsystem etc.

But it is good to know finally that my throwing 50 bolts at a target doesn't give me a better chance to proc than the guy shooting one beam.

er..well not good to know since I was hoping it was the other way.... but good to be informed lol

Each attack with a beam actually hits three or four times -- it's one of the two, I forget which.

Ground phasers do 3 procs if that is any indication.

Basically I asked this question because I currently use AP weaps which have no proc. With another weap type I could get similar dps and an added effect also.

But a 2.5% chance per attack isn't incentive enough for me to refit my ship and waste a respec.
Overall with a bunch of dhc on an escort you just dont do enough cannon volleys typically to warrant it.

If the situation were that the proc is relative to the amount of bolts fired then my 3dhc and 3 turrets would proc like crazy and make the change worthwhile.
