So have you guys ever felt it a bit strange how your toon can do anything the universe throws at them?
Hacking systems, scanning and understanding various specimens, ground combat, space combat etc
Personally I think its rather weird.
My suggestions is purely give roles to classes. This could be a very basic feature or complex. The most basic I can think of is for example anything involving engineering equipment or interactions would be left to engineers, scientific study, medical attention etc would be left to science and unfortunately I have no idea what Tactical would have other than what they do now (take and give fire).
If this could go more complex it would be pretty cool to have branches within the classes to which you could specialise which would impact your abilities on missions (they could be the same branches that are used for skills currently).
So what happens if your an Engineer Captain in a mission and you need something science done? Well your Science officer all of a sudden becomes a bit more useful than just an extra gun with heals.
Further in the game when you get to raids and whatnot it may also pave way to give classes special roles within them.
Personally I'd like to see my Bridge officers pull their weight a bit.
On those exploration missions to access umpteen computers, my science officer does all the dialogue. It'd make sense for him to visually perform the action after I press F in range of the console no?

My thoughts exactly. I mean thats why you employ him right?
Yes yes. Also, half the time, when I'm alerted that an enemy ship has arrived while I'm down on the dirt, it's my away team Tac officer who lets me know, not the specially appointed Commander I left up in the ship. I find that a bit odd.

The fact that we cant even select a 'number one' is a bit TRIBBLE too...
Well technically in the series everyone does all the roles to a certain degree.
The basic stuff we do on these away missions isn't beyond the scope of anyones starfleet training if you go by the series.
I mean anyone can work a console or use a tricorder.... If picard or whoever was alone with an injured crewman he'd bust out the tricorder and hypos and fix him up.... same thing with accessing a file on a console.
Unless the up the complication level of what they ask us to do it really isn't necessary to be "specialized"
