Doing a little bit of research I came across some interesting tid bits about the animated series. The ones where the Caitians were introduced. Several folks made comments that Star Trek the Animated Series wasn't canon. Come to find out, that isn't exactly true.
First off, according to the writer of the original 1968, 1976 and 1996 Star Trek Concordance, of which Paramount approved, the Star Trek Animated Series was considered by Gene Roddenberry as full canon. Only Paramount at the time of the Animated Series release did not. (Bjo Trimble, the writer of the concordance and friends with the Roddenberry, is the same person who petitioned to have the first space shuttle named Enterprise.)
Some interesting tibbits about the Animates Series that goes further to illustrate that the AS is canon.
Kirk got his middle name in the animates series.
The first Holodeck is in the AS
The first spoken "Beam us up, Scotty" is in the Animates Series
Mike and Denise Okuda use the animates series episode by D.C. Fontana "Yesteryear" to fill out Spock's background.
And there are others as well.
So as it can be seen, the Star Trek Animates Series is canon and therefore Caitians are canon. The reason I brought this up, is due to the fact that hopefully Caitians will be out soon and I feel that presenting the evidence of canon now, might just be helpful.
ST:AS was confirmend as not canon by Gene Rodenberry himelf in 1988!
Whatever, some parts are canon like holodeck and also the Caitians. But only because these parts where also used in other movies or series. Thats why they became canon!
Correct, Caitians appear in some of the movies as 'background' characters even though they're never named. Other races from the TAS were also attempted to be worked into canon. Enterprise, for example was going to re-introduce the Kzinti with the blessing of Larry Niven had the show been green-lit for a 5th season. I believe there are a couple other things from the TAS that are canon but others that are not so it's a bit of a minefield.
the canon argument is rather moot and i tend to pay it little attention since STO itself isn't canon and takes from several non canon sources already anyways.

if he were still alive i'd imagine by now the only canon thing left would be Enterprise
