If I refer five paying customers equivalent to $225 (and potentially a lot more) then I'm going to want something unique. This promotion is no easy feat. I wouldn't want a skin, or a badge, or an emote; I would want something distinctive, rare, and unable to obtain by any other means. Wouldn't you?
So if it wasn't the Galaxy-X, what exclusive reward would you offer that wouldn't make everyone so butthurt if they' were unable to get it?
This is a sincere question, I truly want to hear your thoughts on what should be given instead.
A consideration in this factor shoud be this: Is one recruiting to get some stuff, or because you think the game is fun?
Because if you refer other people just because you want a trinket ingame, then the recruitments are just a way of getting somthing, that in the long run probably will become outgunned by somthing else.
I See your point, but IMO you should not recrut because you want a ship, but because you want to share a fun game with freinds.
it doesn't matter what the shiny is there will always b those that say they want it to b obtainable other ways
Yes, but to have the Galaxy X of all things. A pet shuttle, rarish item, and similar items are fine. But also make then obtainable for others in a very long-winded process. And only usable by yourself only.
it doesn't matter what the shiny is there will always b those that say they want it to b obtainable other ways
Exactly, strangely, i think most people want something because its rare but are not willing to do any effort for it, demanding it becomes easier to get, and then ultimately being dissapointed because then everybody flies around in it. im sure when this game gets more depth you'll be able to express yourself or your "uniqueness" in some other way that you will enjoy as much or more then getting that Galaxy X

I guess the issue might be that you have to do things "outside" the game to get such rewards.
I would say a "get a Galaxy X if you tutor a newbie for 5-10 grades or something like that.
You can do this by finding an "offline" friend and get him into this game, helping him around in the beginning. Or you can it by just asking someone with a low level if he would like some help. This might help improve the communities strength, too.
That could be a cool idea to introduce with the sidekicking system.
As for what kind of rewards Cryptic could go for:
- Cryptic Points
- Free respecs
- Ship Tokens
- A unique uniform piece
- A new bridge officer (maybe "

If you refer someone you should do it because you like the game, not because you want an uber item. So if you want to add rewards for those recruiter, it should be cosmetic "nice to have but NOT gameplay relevant" stuff, or something alongside C-Points / free playtime if Cryptic wants to give some monetary incentives to refer.
In any case it should never be anything gameplay affecting! It's already enough we have a cosmetic 2 class playerbase; expanding this to gamplay features is just insane. The Galaxy X as referral reward is the best example: The average fed has to fight PvP open and needs to play the easy target and prey, while the 1st class player recruiter get their fancy cloaked Galaxy X...

The reason it is wrong to do this is because the ship is GAME CHANGING. It is not a fluff item, it is not an additional skin, its not even something that boosts XP gain or the like. This item gives a power advantage to a small amount of people that the vast majority of people will have no chance at all to get. This has always lead to disaster in other games, and if you notice, the big boy on the block Warcraft has never given out game changing power items because it ruins balance, and makes a lot of customers angry. It makes people rage quit when they know some people have an advantage that they can never equalize even though they pay the same subscription fee. The worst marketing mistake any game developer can make is to create a class of haves and have nots.
What Cryptic should have done was to offer Cryptic store points for each successful recruit, and to make certain that, as they promised initially, nothing game changing is for sale in the store. If you can't understand this concept and why so many are outraged then there will be no further point in arguing greed versus what is best for the game and community morale in the long run.

Except by that same count all the pre-order items are 'game changing' and none of those are as-yet available in-game. One might consider, say, the TR-116 rifle to be game changing, as they might the Auto Defense Turret or the TOS Constitution. All those things offer certain abilities that one can't get any other way in the game so simply arguing that the Galaxy X is a lone example just doesn't work.
So why all the rage now and not for the earlier items like the Liberated Borg and everything else?
What is there possibly able to be offered by Cryptic to get a person to Intice / Bribe / (?) five friends to pony-up for the game, and then not drop the subscription durng the first 30 days.
We poor lifers have already seen our benefits go the way of the Dodo:
Efficient Trait (Exclusive to Borg), is now on the Alien
Two extra Slots, is now purchasable for 500 Cryptic Points
Exclusive club, now being offiered as a 400-day bonus
Title , Crytic is giving away "titles" like party favors
So,
One referral buys the game, reward = Holo-tribble
One Referral stays more than 30 days = Holo-Bridge Officer
Five referrals that stay more than 30 days = Exclusive Ship
All I can say is, after all we've gone through so far.... stop crying. Some people will have this thing, and will have to answer to the five referrals as to how good/bad the game is. Nuf said ??

#1. This isn't an argument. I asked a question to find out what you think would be a suitable yet equivalent replacement. You failed to answer the question, because Cryptic Points are already part of the promotion.
and
B. You call it a GAME CHANGER, I don't see how you can make this claim when nobody has test flown this ship. The weapon it comes with takes up a weapon slot, and cannot be removed, What if it sucks? What if you'd rather put a plasma cannon there because you maxed it in skill points? Oh well, you can't. Maybe it IS a game changer, but it's certainly not going to be a GAME BREAKER.
Your outraged over a virtual toy ship that hasn't been released yet? Stamp your feet and scream, "IT"S NOT FAIR !!!1!!eleven!" and things will be all better.

I'll register "I wish I had" as my answer to that question. I let myself believe that they'd just limit it to little things that become irrelevant at endgame. Joke's on me now.
As far as alternate rewards... well how about a Galaxy-X skin? I've already suggested how just giving it a special graphical effect for mounted dual beams could provide some of the feel for the spinal-mount laser.
Or they could have made it another way to get the now in-demand TOS MU uniform. That way it'd be connected to something that costs more than the CO LTS package, appeasing those of us CO Lifetimers (not including me) who think offering it for less than that would be a travesty.
In all honesty I could recruit 5 friends pretty easily and I don't really care about any rewards for doing it.
A lot of my friends have been asking me how the game is because they might want to come aboard and play. But I cannot in good conscience recommend this game to anyone in it's current state, especially someone who I'd consider to be a buddy. I have had fun wiith STO, but it does get boring quickly and I wouldn't consider myself to be much of a friend if I got 5 people to pay to play this game for a month or two and then be bored.
So, I'll just wait and hope that good additions to the game are coming soon.
1) Title
2) As someone else suggested, perhaps better transwarp options
3) Exclusive uniform parts
4) points in the C-store
Don't you think people would be angrier over transwarp options than a ship, though? ZOMG! It's not fair they get a 2 minute timer and I don't! They can do X and X faster!

What if your friends demo the game and love it? They might have different opinions.
Some kind of reward is fine, even if it is a ship skin. But it should not be an exclusive ship that is the only one that has an extra gun and is the only ship for it's faction that can cloak.
In other words, you should not be forking over (or having others fork over) $200+ to fly an alpha class ship.
if you bring to cryptic paying peolpe then you should be allowed a unique ship. It is possible since i saw a federation person real person in a borg cube. I guessing it had to be a dev who was able to do that.
bring in 5 peolpe and get special weapons
bring in 10 peolpe and get an experimental sheild matrix to add to your ship. it is bound though.
bring in 15 peolpe and get a access to shuttle craft to launch via the devic slot. can launch only 1 shuttle
bring in 20 peolpe and you get to build and pilot an experimental ship of your empires choosing, Rank of Cmdr must be met to fly this ship.
The individuals must stay on for a month to count toward awards. they must also be a new person to star trek online.
Stop with the BS skins. I want real ships with unque aspects as cryptic promised. nothing was mentioned about skins when this project was being developed.

We seriously need to draw the line on Cryptic/Atari marketing wasting Dev time on "exclusives" that are unobtainable in game.
This game is dying for lack of content. Quit wasting what time the Devs do have in making stuff that isn't for everyone.

Well, it was mentioned by Dstahl that this was a side project 'for fun' that one of the devs was doing and the manager liked it and added it as a reward. So I don't think that this was originally taking up any major developer time.

This ship has a non-combat cloak. It is not the same as the Klingon battle cloak. Uniique? Yes. Game Breaker? No.

Well then lets respond with a series of questions.
What should the Klingon only Players get a Galaxy X is useless to them....
What should the Romulan only Players get a Galaxy X is useless to them...
What about the players where pyramid marketing schemes are illegal and can not get the Galaxy X from the RAF program?
The item they are offering is an insult to anyone who does not want to play Federation characters....

Multi-level marketing is not illegal anywhere in the US, Just ask anyone from Avon, Mary Kaye, or Amway. Pyramid schemes involving strictly cash transactions with no product or service are illegal almost everywhere.
2) As someone else suggested, perhaps better transwarp options
Suggested it because thats what you get over in CO.
And nobody ever complained about that.
Heck they even call it warp rather than teleport.
For 1 recruit.
Spatial Manipulator
Warp to the nearest Powerhouse.
And for 2.
Farlong Device
Warp to the nearest Transport location.
And you also get 30 days of game time for every second recruit that subscribes.
And all this text could have been avoided if Chat realized she could do this.
And oh... Their warp to friend last forever while ours last for 30 days. Go figure.

I am not sure what would work to be honest. I plan on working to get the Gal X because I want that ship.

I already have lots of free time.
