I just wanted to write you because I'm concerned about you and want to give you some constructive feedback.
Fist off, I just want to say that I really like your games and I'm a big fan of CoH. I'm currently playing STO and i am pleasantly impressed by the gameplay. With that said, I becoming increasingly irritated with the lack of teamwork I see in your most recent MMOs. I bought Champions and I really enjoyed it for a while, but I ran into the exact same problem I'm running into with STO. The games are one player games. The content is heavy with easy content that can be completed by doing them solo. The result is that people grind through the whole game rather than looking for groups. For the very few missions that require groups, they have a disconnected feeling that requires absolutely no teamwork. You play along side other players, rather than playing with them. As soon as these missions are complete, people drop from their group (if they even grouped).
I understand your logic in that you are creating games for the casual player. Your concern is for the player who only has 15 min to 30 min to play the game. Although I respect that you are trying to offer the choice to play alone, by not giving enough incentive for people to work together, a difficulty that requires tactics to be used, and a class system that doesn't give a role to play in a group, you are destroying the best part of the genre -- teamwork.
Teamwork gives you a feeling of satisfaction that ultra-customization will never fill. This is what made CoH great. It was a game that was difficult enough to require you to be part of a competent group. A single person can cause the whole group to fail if they don't do their part. In STO and Champions, I have a feeling that I am easily replaceable and don't offer anything special to a group.
It is my hope that someday you will create a game that is made for those who buy MMOs to play with others.
If there is anything I can do to help you guys, please don't hesitate to call or write.
I agree. They hit the nail on the head with City of Heroes. Great group inteface and it took all of five minutes on my server to find a full group and run missions of any level. Sometimes I had problems but most of the time I would find a group and go pound bad guys. Champions really droped the ball on that one and group missions didn't scale. At least in STO they do scale so they are halfway there.
I don't agree.
i am glad the game doesn't force you to group. I dont understand why anyone would like to play a game that FORCES you to group .
to Topic starter: You have almost always choice if you want to goup or not.
I agree, the Star Trek universe doesn't show alot of grouping in the movies and shows, and I'm glad Cryptic doesn't force it in STO.
I imagine it is designed this way to emphasize the player and his crew of BO's in the storyline rather than the efforts of a team of players.
If the Dev's could add a true warlike setting , then teams could be more benefical to the player base.
It feels a lot like Guild wars to me. The missions are pretty much soloable anyway, but it is nice when you are doing an open instance patrol and someone else joins, just for something different.
TBH even in WOW, starting a new character, it's way simpler and less of a hindrance to level up alone, so the way this game is done is no bad thing. And like someone else said, in Star Trek, they don't go around the galaxy in huge fleets, so why force us to do it here?
It is my hope that someday you will create a game that is made for those who buy MMOs to play with others.
Join a Fleet with some RA5 characters and start doing the STF's.
I've always appreciated Cryptic's MMO's being about giving people choices. Getting people to work together comes from players choosing to work together. MMO's that deliberately weaken a player's character just so the player will be forced into grouping are not my cup of tea, and apparently Cryptic does not wish to create their MMO's like that.
Even in CoH/V most of the content is solo-friendly on normal difficulty at least and not those AE missions with "nightmare" AV's in them with the exception of task-forces and rare missions that require you to interact with more than one object, at the exact same time. If you've got any complaints about grouping in STO, direct them to the community first and foremost, because if a player wants to build a support character, they definitely can do so and some of the group-only content in STO gives you ample reasons to do so, if that's what you enjoy.
I went through most of the content in STO with my buddy, or solo when he wasn't around and I wanted to complete a patrol. Stuff like DSE and Fleet Actions, we actually stayed away from because of a number of issues, one of them being forced into groups with people who didn't even use the chat interface to communicate!
I love not needing to group, not having to do something low level if I couldn't find a group.
You can group everything if you want to, or solo it all if you prefer, that is perfect to me.
I've avoided the STFs so far because of the being forced to group thing and the whole must have vent thing as well.
I like fleet acions because I'm with other folks without needing to be grouped, no feeling guilted into chatting about TRIBBLE when all I want to do is play the game and relax. So.. I like things how they are you can group, I don't have to, and we can still work together.
Maybe Cryptic should look a bit into how FFXI was constructed that game is ALL Team work
Not true!! You could easily solo the first 12 levels! LOL
I partially agree. I would like to see a good deal of solo story missions where you can go down with your bridge crew and complete the mission. BUT I also wish that there were road blocks in the story where you had to do a 5 man mission like the STF but easier. Make it a requirement that it's a 5 person group with no BOffs but leave the current difficulty. This may people can play jobs instead of the solo play were everyone is basically another type DPS.

This game was not designed to put frustrating roadblocks and content bottlenecks in your way. It has some of this content, but the purpose of it in this game is not the same as in other games. It's not there to bottleneck you.
A lot of hardcore MMO players are not comfortable with this. Because they expect it.
But none of Cryptic's games have ever been designed like that. This one is no exception. Cryptic doesn't design dragon raids.
To the OP : Why that 's all they know how to do . Cryptic has never made an MMO , before why would they start now ? CoH was a single player , Champions is a single player and now STO . Why change when that's all you know ?
Not true!! You could easily solo the first 12 levels! LOL

No, flat out no, why roadblock people so some other person can feel needed? If I don't need help why force it on me? You want to group go ahead, you can group everything all you want, have at it and enjoy yourself, but don't suggest forcing me to if I don't want to for regular missions.
For the people that can only play for 15-30 at a time, grouping just to play is more of a problem and hassle, then fun.
There are more then a few instances in SWG (as an example)were you have to be in a full group just to have a chance at doing them. Usually it takes most of that 15-30 min just to get a full group together, (sending out the call for more players) getting set up with buffs, getting everyone in the same area, ect..
No sooner then you get the team together some people will either have connection issues, R/L issues they have to deal with, or just run out of time.
You will almost never find enough people "Just hanging around waiting to get into a group" it usually takes a long time just to get enough people together that have a clue what they are doing. Then when you pick up random players you either get immpatient, immature, Greifers, or just idiots, that will ruin the group action.
To force people to get into groups just to play is not very enjoyable, especially with so many players that play in different time zones. Some people can only play when very few others are playing.
Personally I like games were I can play at my own pace, when I feel like playing, not being Forced into groups that are usually more trouble then there worth. Occassionally I will find a few people who are worth grouping/ hanging out with, but they are about as uncommon, as a purple loot drop on a normal setting.

I agree with this. In CoH there is incentive to group, it's fun, you gain XP a little quicker, it's fun, you don't need to worry about who has what mission since everyone gets (almost) the same rewards and it's fun. But at the same time if you don't want to team soloing is perfectly viable. You gain less experience than in a team setting but you still progress fast enough that you don't feel like you're being punished.
The problem in STO is that there's very little incentive to team. Missions take longer, the experience bonus is negligible, you have to find people who are on exactly the same mission as you and the overall experience of group gameplay is less fun than going solo.
I'm generally opposed to forcing people to team (whether it's just nerfing rewards solo or making content impossible to solo) but I'd love to see something put in to make people WANT to team up. You don't need to make the rewards better or force people to team, just make it easy to team and more fun to team and people will team.
In CoH I almost always form a team, the extra rewards are nice but I mostly do it because group play is fun and engaging. And the various mechanics mean I don't need to worry about who I get. I just grab the first 7 people to respond, set one of my missions as the primary mission and go for it. In STO I solo almost exclusively. Teaming is just a pain. You need to find peopel with the same mission as you and of a similar level, get everyone together and then worry about what everyone's doing.

Amen! I hate to be forced but I love to have a choice. STO ist exactly that: If I want to I can play solo as long as I want or just hop into a Fleet Action or a little Team PVP to have some team fun. Choice! That´s my encouragement, not shinier loot or more XP or Money... Perfect!
nah.. i have to be honest here..
i doubt.. cryptic would alienate people like that
by denying solo / single player missions..
i do enjoy grouping.. hell ya..
but i do NOT want to be forced to it.
in order to advance or do the majority of quests..
i am playing kling's n there are 2 few.. solo missions IMO..
the game should really be called "STARFLEET Online"
as starfleet have about 500% more solo / single player missions
then we do..
i get the point behind grouping. ya.. but to deny it completely.. would be..
a hit in there $$ stash.. as i am very sure. many ppl would leave.
some people JUST.. dont want to.

I think a lot of you are missing the point. If there is no incentive to play in a group, no one does it. Why would you group if you can do just as good soloing the whole game easily. Because there is no reason to group, there are a lot less people playing the game because of the lack of community. I feel like the hole game was originally dumbed down for the few people who are stupid enough to pay a monthly fee to play a one player game. It is a MASSIVLY MULTIPLAYER game after all.
On this note I want to say that I am very thankful to Cryptic that they added a difficulty slider, better items rewards, and a death penalty. And look forward to being able to sidekick. These were some great steps in the right direction.

Don't care about incentive, if I don't want to group I won't. Life is massive, but it doesn't mean I want to sit and eat with you at your place even if we like the same food and watch the same show tonight. If I want to eat and watch at my place at my pace then that's what I'll do. Just because we're in the same place or have the same interest doesn't mean we HAVE to do it together.
Massive doesn't mean someone has to group, just like life it means they can, and when they do they may have a great time, but it also means you can go off on your own and do what you want until you feel like company.
Look no matter how you put it people are going to cry , Noone wants to "force" people to group but the simple FACT is people who play 15-30 mins a day should not be as well geared as the people who play six hours a day. Normal MMO's have three levels so to speak SOLO where you can well solo everything and get meger rewards with little effort , Group where you must have help to finish the mission (this is NOT forcing anyone to group its choise) and the rewards are simi good , and finaly raid/fleet where you must have alot of help time and planing to finish the mission and the rewards are awsome.
Its not like im speaking greek here this is how MMO's have been forever (the good one's anyway) handing out 8th place trophies is lame I dont want one , this whole mentality of EVERYONE geting the good gear is well ....stupid there is nothing to look forward to no reasion to keep playing or trying to get better.
people can go into a pvp sit on their ars and do nothing and still get the reward????? WTH are you insain.
Ohh and btw cryptic if the 15-30 min a day player's see the six hour a day player's with way better gear guess what they will make time to play more and you will make more money and if those who have six hours to play get nothing out of it then you lose money because like me they will quit.

Massive Multi-Player means alot of people Can play at the same time. It does not mean you MUST play with them in a group, PvP against them, nor even have to talk to them. All it means is that they are there, and you are there. Just in case you want to play together.
I have no problem with a good incentive to encourage people to group up. Just as long as there is plenty of content for those of us that enjoy just playing to play, and not have to deal with a bunch of sugar-hyped youngsters with the attention span of a hummingbird.
There are times I just like to read over the text of a mission, see what the mission is all about. I hate just clicking through it all just to keep up with some of these people. Especiall those that love to run to the next bad guy at full impulse, who usually die by the time I get to them to help at full weapons power. I end up doing most of it solo anyway, while they play Kamakazi.
I just wanted to write you because I'm concerned about you and want to give you some constructive feedback.

This guy is 100% right go ahead and dissagree all you want the proff will come when this game die's in six months I played an MMO for 5 years along with many many of my friends who came over here with me we lasted two month's in this game( thats realy realy sad) its weak, far to easy and has ZERO community.

Ah I see, some just don't feel special if someone that spends less time plaing than you eventually gets the same stuff.
I've done the raiding/grouping up till 2 in the morning on a work night, have no interest in it any more, done the guild officer thing helping build up/gear up people that then decide they don't like it in this guild now that they have gear, so I'm not looking for that any more.
Now I want to log in, play for a while, and advance without hassle or drama, and this game lets me do it. Except for the STFs, and I'll avoid them for a while longer.
HAHA so you failed as a raid leader and now you have your tail between your legs....not my problem.
Does the guy that works 15 mins a day make the same as the guy who works 8 hours?
Does the guy who races for 15 laps and then crashes get the same prize as the guy who wins?
Ummm welll NO of course not nore should he, thats not to say there should not be pleanty of solo content and there is, now what about the rest of the community??
HAHA so you failed as a raid leader and now you have your tail between your legs....not my problem.
Wasn't a raid leader, went on raids in an alliance, and helped in a small guild. And your response is why people don't want to bother grouping. Too many folks with that attitude. Who said it was your problem? I failed at nothing, just outgrew the need to deal with hassles, and grew to like getting rest before work.

I can agree with that now what about those who want more?
like I said before three level's of play something for everyone, and no EVERYONE SHOULD NOT BE EQUAL.
I can agree with that now what about those who want more?
You have it, you can group every mission in the game, you have your group only STFs, no one taking that away from you, I'm just against the OP idea of putting roadblocks in regular missions. I'm not anti group I'm anti making ME group when I don't want to. I've got nothing against STFs, I just don't feel like doing them now as it is a hassle to me. Join a guild and do stuff with people that want to group wth you, I'm not against ANY of that.

ya ur rite.. there is no reason to, but there should be abit more for star fleet side.
and make a bunch of missions where maybe klingon's and starfleet work 2gether.
to defeat big boss.
but cryptic has never done big bosses like that. so might be a dead idea.
but there is little incentive to do grouping for star fleet.
as i am klingon.. i am queued on the damn pvp list. every sec. of my online gaming time.
due to the friggin quests. all need teaming.
After reading the responses posted here, I'm pretty sure I don't want to group with many who posted here lol! Very rude and if you don't agree with their point of view downright hostile! I think there should be some things done for more comradeship, but like the fact i can solo without getting inferior gear. Many complained this game didn't do things different, but they apparently did here so the casual player isn't penalized as the groupies seem to want.

a hit in there $$ stash.. as i am very sure. many ppl would leave.
some people JUST.. dont want to.
so they shouldnt be forced to.

Wasn't a raid leader, went on raids in an alliance, and helped in a small guild. And your response is why people don't want to bother grouping. Too many folks with that attitude. Who said it was your problem?
I can agree with that now what about those who want more?
like I said before three level's of play something for everyone, and no EVERYONE SHOULD NOT BE EQUAL.
