are they any good also what if i dont put points in a weapon type dose that change any thing?
The general consensus seems to be if you want to boost weapons you should use your 'cheaper' T-3 skill points on phasers or disruptors and use those valuable T-5 skill points somewhere more useful.
All beams have the same DPS, they just have different proc abilities. Now, if you have a certain propensity for a particular proc, then by all means go for it.
if you dont put points in them then they do much less damage, so always put some points into the weapon you are using
but other than the special ability they will do the same damage as any other weapon so it makes sense to use the lower tier weapons like phaser or disruptor
the only thing to consider is that some people in pvp will use engineering slots to add armour to protect them from the lower tiered weapons because most people just go for the cheap one.
Using weapons beyond phasers, disruptors and photons/quantums would be a lot more appealing if the other weapons weren't so expensive in terms of skill points.
Why do the various weapons have different costs anyway? Once you get into specifics (tetryon, polaron, plasma and such) there is really no difference in damage delivered or game changing advantage, only different procs.
Would the skill system be improved by having all weapons cost the same skill points per skill rank?
In other words, once you hit the point of specialization (phaser, disruptor, tetryon, etc.) everything costs the same.

Unfortunately, that's about the only thing the general consensus was able to agree upon, as they're still very much arguing about where to spend those points that you are trying to save. Since, you do need to spend your points. All of them. To get your Admiral ability.
And that right there is the tricky part. Since you have to spend all your points, it is possible to build around Antiprotons or Polarons. You're not saving your points for anything, after all.
You can build with a cheaper tier. And a lot of people do. But you can just as easily build with Admiral rank beam weapons. You just have to be ok with putting the 7 to 9 of your 16 points into that skill.
There really isn't a whole lot of choice at admiral level for some builds. So ... there is no consensus yet on what to spend those points on. And there are quite a few builds that were able to squeeze Antiprotons into them. Which means there's just as many that can use Polarons as well.
I think alot of people putting points into higher tier weapons types is simply because not as many other players have real resistences to them.
If enough people go with the idea of sticking with phasers or disruptors because theyre cheap then most people will stack resistences against them.
If you use a weapon type that isn't seen nearly as often you have a better chance of your opponent having minimal to no resists and can hit that much harder with them.
In terms of PvE I don't think it matters much but in terms of PvP it can give you a bit of an edge since noone can have high resistance to every weapon type.
Addressing the OP I personally like the energy drain proc idea that polaron offers. But after using tetryon for a while I came to the conclusion that basing your weapon choice on a 2.5% proc chance isnt worth it in the long run. But like I said before... using that weapon type because it isn't used as often as others can be a benefit.
You're only really sacrifice +8 bonus if you're using your points purely in ship abilities, by going with Polaron weapons. How significant is that? Not very much. I've got my Advanced Escort and Polaron Weapons skills at 8/8, and I've had my DBB crit on overload for... think my highest so far was 28K. And that's only with 3 of 4 tac consoles with Polaron boost. It's still massive damage.

If you combine them with energy siphon +tykens rift+ target subsystems then yes. Basically just for science guys.
dont know if this will hurt me or not its more on tanking then DPS

Beside that...Polaron is nice...if the levelcap would raise!
