Now that the forums have broken out with people trying to buy and sell referrals maybe Cryptic will wake up and realize it was not such a good idea...
Most games have some sort of referral program. And all games have people who attempt whether successfully or not to take advantage of all aspects of a games many facets. This is nothing new and by no means an a unique situation nor is this an animal that has been created by Cryptic's current marketing strategy.

Although to stick with the topic I feel this current referral program could be better.
My main problem with it is it does not include me. I do not fly a cruiser. I would like to see an escort and science skin added as well to the recruit 5 people reward. Also as a Klingon ship. As it is right now only feds who fly cruisers have an incentive to recruit players. This has been a short sight of whoever developed this current RAF plan. Adding these to the prize you can chose from would open up a huge portion of the player base to try and recruit additional players.
It's unusual putting the best ship (T5.5) with full functionality into a referral program. What happens now is just the consequence of a huge bunch of players want this item and only a small bunch of them will succeed in earing it while using the "legal" ways.
This will only be the first wave, we will see the most insane creativity and community-breaking competition soon. The result will be, the more hard $ you have, the higher the chance to succeed. I wonder when the first eBay-auctions trading Referral subs will appear.
Great job, but hey... it's only a "usual" referral program. This happens in every MMO....every day. I should go to a doctor to let him check my eyes, because I never saw someting like this in 12 years online gaming.
If the referral item were a unique T5.5 ship amongst a fair selection of T5.5 ships that were available in-game, I think it would be fine. As it is, the only way to get the best ship in game (until Season 2, assuming other T5.5 ships are comparable) is to shill for Cryptic or spend $200 yourself. That's not normal for an MMO. That would be like WoW putting the best raid gear on their referral program before the dungeon was even opened.

why wouoldn't it be? it works perfectly for CoH...... and CoH went thru the same little road bump when RAF first came out. it'll smooth out and in another 3-5 months the game will be perfect and nobody on the forums will complain any long, i bet a galaxy-x on it!

seeing as how nobody actually HAS the ship yet, how do you know it's the best ship? who knows maybe the "custome" gun just fires rainbow beams and does the same ammount of dmg as a normal mkx phaser?
cryptic hasn't given any of the specs of the ship so we have no way of knowing and are all just jump to conclusions based on what we seen in the episode.
who knows, maybe the galaxy-x will be the fed version of the klingon carrier? >_>;

I completely agreed with you until dstahl started giving details on the ship. This is what we know:
1) It's part of a series of ships (a Galaxy, a Defiant and an Intrepid) that are being refit for the level increase in Season 2 (though the Galaxy X remains unique to the referral program)
2) It has a cannon that can go through objects and can hit multiple targets (granted this takes a weapon slot)
3) it may have (dstahl's speculation, not mine) an out-of-combat cloaking device.
Really, point 1 is the issue. These ships are designed for level 46 - 50, but if you and/or your friends spend enough money, you can get one in as little as 30 days!
What's more, they'd catch hell from everyone who spent 200 dollars to get one if these things really sucked. Obviously their opinions weigh more than lifers / monthly subscribers who have no intention of trying to acquire this ship, so you do the math.

Cryptic wants money...
Referrals generate money
Ergo, Cryptic is behind whatever it takes to get people into the game...
even if it is for a month, they make at least 15 bucks... unless people want a break and go for the months bulk package before they realize what they are getting...then they have more.

I agree, this isn't unusual.
Why the devs said it was ok.

Your avatar is great.

Agreed. She has a really dirty face.
the devs have said in another post its ok to do at the moment, so why not let them wield the ban hammer
my only problem is it does spam the forums up a little

Agreed. Extremely naughty, and perhaps insatiable.
