Hello, long time no see.
I am a prior player here for the free weekend.
I want to tell cryptic why the MMOer players left shortly after launch, in a constructive way.
I am not bashing crytic.
The game was...and is still missing certain elements that MMOers consider absolutely
required in an MMO game. That is why only Heavy star trek fans are left.
1. Immersion < if a game doesn't have it...the MMO players leave.
---- Space should be huge, not small
---- If there are instances, they need to be invisible
---- Immersion space combat is conducted from the captains chair, or pilot seat, 3rd person
is used as optional...it is not the default.
---- space travel should be fun and immersive
2. avatar/camera controls need to be flexable
---- If you want the camera to follow you and stay oriented, it should
---- If you want to use a joystick , trackball, mouse , Z Board ect...they ALL should work
---- Animations should be smooth
---- Tutorial hints should be able to be turned off
3. Planets are huge
---- planetary playable surfaces need to be the size of SWG planets/ wow areas
on all major planets
---- each planet should have numerous NPCs to give out quests ON that planet.
4. Grouping should be user friendly
---- If I am grouped with someone, and I go to a planet surface or enter a mission,
my friend should automatically enter the same mission on arrival.
5. All factions should be equal
---- It doesn't matter which side I choose, there should be the same kinda game play,
the same number of quests of the same type and each should have their own tutorial
and thier own faction specific quest lines.
6. PvP should have BOTH, qued battle grounds and generic open free PvP areas.
THESE are what MMO players look for, they could really care less if a phaser cannon
is placed in just the right spot according to star trek lore.
The strickly MMO players left, because the game doesn't have it.
If cryptic wants to recruit subscripts from the massive MMO player pool, they need to get
these things first.
That is my contructive feedback...from strictly an MMO player

I agree with you on most of these counts, save the 3rd person perspective. Given the nature of the possibly fast paced space combat, I feel the default 3rd person allows you to maintain situational awareness especially in pvp. By going to a bridge screen situation I think that it would put players at a disadvantage. Immersive, possible but a disadvantage nonetheless.
2. avatar/camera controls need to be flexable
---- If you want the camera to follow you and stay oriented, it should
---- If you want to use a joystic , trackball, mouse , Z Board ect...they ALL should work
---- Animations should be smooth

Agree with the tutorials being off. Currently I use a trackball and Zboard so I am not sure what you are saying here as they work fine. I disagree with the joystick as that is more for fighter style combat not tall ships in space.
3. Planets are huge
---- planetary playable surfaces need to be the size of SWG planets/ wow continates
on all major planets
---- each planet should have numerous NPCs to give out quests ON that planet.
This one is a little tougher. I sort of agree and disagree. It would be nice if the planets were larger in scope however, given the number of planets needed I would tend to think it would make the game way to massive as far as data requirements. Take a look at the limited number of planets in SWG. If we were only talking about a few sure. However in Star Trek there are many many planets to contend with.
4. Grouping should be user friendly
---- If I am groupped with someone, and I go to a planet surface or enter a mission,
my friend should auto matically enter the same mission on arrival.
5. All factions should be equal

Well written and thought out. Good points all. P.S. Check your inbox.

Well, as a long time MMO player I gotta say that I couldn't care less if the gun is totally correct according to lore. Its weird you make some really good points but kinda ruin it by saying that you care about how a gun looks.

I agree with all points except the 3rd person space battle. I at first when I started playing this game though it would be awesome to fight from the bridge but I have sense come to love the way space battle is don't in this game. I really is the best part of STO. However I feel space flight in between sectors should be done from the bridge. Instead of in sector Space.
I think I pretty much agree with Atomics response really. Larger planets would be nice but the amount of planets in this game they couldn't really do that for all of them. The game would end up being 100gb in size. I would like to see key planets more developed though with Iconic destinations. The major planets like earth and Vulcan and Riza should be 50 times what they are. I think they have plans for that in the future though.
A well though out and fair analysis of the game though.
i have to say I mostly agree with everything but number 3. the planets don't have to be as big as SWG because has around 11 planets ( if I remember right ), and we have a full sector of planets. what we need is to open those up . personally I think every main planet on the main map should have the option to land on it. maybe later on they could add player housing if we could keep some sort of list of the planets that we explored. just an idea.
anyway, have a fun week end and welcome back, even if it's for a little bit.
I agree with everything except the camera comments. I have played several MMOs and the ones that kept me did not constantly TRIBBLE with my character (SCI SHIPS) and they only improved events and did not make lame attempts to make the raids (STFs) harder. Nerf me? time to quit. Not since they messed up the Paly's on WOW have I played it - even the "pinnacle" of MMO loses die hard MMOs because of giant TRIBBLE ups like the ones I listed above. And to TRIBBLE with die hard ST fans...ouch even more dangerous.
Howdy! I guess this free weekend thingy gives me my posting privileges back as well. Big patch to download. I haven't been keeping up with this at all. How is the game coming along?

The Difficulty Slider and Death Penalty are interesting, if you choose to use them. Accolades, Replay, and Sidekicking come at the end of the month. Season 2 in July will see the addition of RA6-10 content. Other then that it's about the same.
In addition to my own commentary, I agree with everything you said.
The unfortunate slight, is that the lot of us were saying this well before the game's release. Cryptic went their own way, the only way they could. Their signature core game design platform doesn't automatically allow for these types of suggestions though, I say this considering that CoX being x number of years old... has not expanded THAT much beyond its original parameters. Also take into account that their second and THIRD MMO's bear striking resemblance to their original effort... leads me to believe that their engine is not design for a quality AAA MMO fabrication.
It does not have "epic" or "grand" or "large scale" in its toolsets. If I am wrong, then I will gladly wait for them to prove me wrong... however... how LONG we will have to wait is another matter.

1. The larger the instances are the more memory they eat up. Most players do there quest and leave. So this memory is wasted for nothing. I don't think the instances are small at all.
As for combat from bridge veiw you wouldn't be able to see anything. All those mobs firing torpedoes from behind and beside you. You would never see them.
2. The tutorial hint box can be moved so it's out of the way. You can just drag it to the bottom right hand corner or some other place out of the way. It has memory and stay where you put the box.
3. Having planets that large just eats up memory. No one uses much of the space. They just fly in straight lines to their objectives. Also they just hang out in towns. 99% is just wasted. The reason the planets were so large in SWG is you could build homes, towns and farms.
4. I think that a group should be placed in the same instance as well. That should be automatic.
5. They are adding a lot more PVE for the Klingons. I hope when they add the next faction. That they have quest lines to level cap. It should be that way.
6. I would love to see a open PVP system in each tier. A system that you enter and PVP in space then. It would have a couple of ground instance you could enter. Like a space station, moon or base on a asteroid. With a planet you could beam down too.
on my list, do keep in mind....those things are (for the most part) on a strictly
heavy to hardcore MMOer must have list.
This assumes they are not a big star trek fans....fans are more....forgiving.
and as for...well it would be nice but they can't do so and so.....your prob right.
AND that is why this game will never grow...it has all the star trek fans that play
MMOs as subscribers/lifers already.
That leaves non-star trek MMO players........they tried it, hated it and will not be coming back.
My suggestion to the fans here, hope the game developes into a nice nitch game for you.
What is do-able ?
Get rid of bugs, add some new races, add some raids and such now and then.
What will not happen ?
Large separately sold expansion - there just will not be enuff sales to justify it.
They might give you a mini direct downloadable.
This is not doom and gloom.....it is a bit of reality.
Well as a relatively new player I do hear pretty much the same thing from the Veteran MMO crowd, and I see where they are coming from. But the thing is (and I know I'm going to get waylaid by the old: No game will survive without us Vets speech ) most of the people I am hanging out with in STO ( and it's a considerable number..) STO is their first MMO, they aren't battle harden veterans, and for the most part they are having a blast and are not really getting what all the complaining is about.
Do they think it's perfect? Not at all But what they want is sliding doors ship interiors and More Bridge functionality, but they aren't forming a mob with pitchforks and threatening to drive their cars into Cryptics offices (which is apparently acceptable at sites like mmorg.com but the Trek crowd gets called weird and extreme because they are into RP.) My point is that yes the MMoer crowd for the most part has left, but there are still a lot of people playing and more coming in every day. Just because one MMO fails a certain demographic doesnt mean it fails all demographics and will soon go the way of Tabula Rasa. I think STO has a future, but the future seems to be with the more causal to novice MMO gamer, and the Starfleet International member who sees this as their own Holodeck.
I know that will most likely anger the Mmo vets, but the genre is expanding and games of this nature are to be expected. There are still Hardcore MMOs out there Darkfall, Mortal Online and Terra are all new comers that cater to the traditional demographic, but all MMO wont simply because the market is now more diverse.

Very well put Fay...and QFT. I agree I think we will have quite a few what I call everymans MMos pop up and STO is for good or bad one of those, but that dosen't make the game a failure and that dosen't mean Hardcore MMO gaming is dead.
Nice sweeping generalization OP. I've been playing MMO's for over a decade now and I've been here since open beta and don't see myself leaving anytime soon. It sounds to me like you and a lot of other people belong to the ADD'er crowd and not the MMO'er. I see the same posts in every MMO I've ever played and it all amounts to the same thing, people will like the game or they won't
you are very correct, even if only about the immersion part. i harped on it from day one of the open beta. loading screens everywhere all the time = no immersion. sector space = no immersion.
like i also said, if sto was released before eve, it would have had a better chance, but one thing i think your wrong in, not only are MMOers leaving sto so are star trek gamers/fans, because they have already been spoiled on much better space scifi mmo such as eve online.
you expect someone accustomed to the freedom and huge universe in eve, to be content with sector space? from a star trek game? why all of a sudden is a star trek game not THE EXAMPLE for space exploration, how could any other space game be better than star trek? than one that really started it all as we know it today.
sadly these problems cant be fixed as the game was designed this way.
and sadly like ive said before, it was designed this way because they had a 2 year time limit contractual obligation because of the mess that perpetual created. alot of sad events led to sto being what it is today, none of which is cryptics fault.
Well, I'd like to believe that us "vets" are important, but my kin in LotRO.....many of them never played an MMO before, have no desire to try another one and have been around, steady, for 2+ years.
STO is the same way, with such huge IP's, you will have a good portion of people because "It's Star Trek"...and let's face it, the majority of "vet's" are whiny little *******s who won't ever be happy with this game, starting with the instancing. That right there makes the game "fail" to them, and no amount of other stuff will make up for it.
I hate to say it, but by and large, MMO'ers really need a good TRIBBLE kicking and a glass of STFU.

Well...that is umm a frank and honest opinion.
I do see the Non mmoer crowd take a ton and I mean a ton of abuse by the so called "vets" And the only thing that makes sense is....they are scared, that this hobby is no longer their sovereign territory, and really how can a Star Trek MMO ever be that? Last night I was invited to a RP event on DS9, these things happen regularly and are organized by two of the larger fleets and all of a sudden DS9 has 250-300 players I would say maybe 2% of those were veteran gamers, the vast vast majority were al members of the Star Trek international fan club or the North Dallas Starfleet Battles task force ( a Table top club that plays SFB in Texas) Ask these folks if they like they game they will say no they love it. Why is those opinions less valid that some jaded gamer who hates everything?
Im not saying STO love it or leave it, I am saying that this game will never be a hard core gamers game, and people need to come to grips with that.
I am veteran MMO player. I love this game it has two different types of game play. I can command my away teams on ground. Set them up for different situations. It has fleet actions, STF and PVP mini games. They can always add content.
I don't call long boring space flights to get to a quest objective or location immersion. I call it down time. I have no problem with the instances. I really don't want to waste all that time anymore on travel. I want more game play and action. Than a thirty minute flight to do a 5 minute quest.
A lot of good feedback in this forum. This is constructive critism. This is what the threads should honestly look like. Fatherfungus(dunno if thats right) or OP, thank you for taking the time out to construct your feedback, yes also everyone else in this thread. I hope Cryptic takes notice of these particular threads and makes good use of them.
Thankyou OP I agree with you on all points except Camera Angle.
I dont mind the camera angle but in Sector space you should have the option to travel while on the bridge of the ship.
I would look forward to Open Pvp Areas. Also they need to add the option to open Pvp to do a dice roll of type of system.
If the attacker wants to they can try to beam aboard your ship and do a ground battle. If the attacker chooses to Capture Enemy Vessel and won the roll it would be All Ground combat for that fight if someone jumps in the battle they will be informed the allied ship has intruders aboard.
The Attacker friendlies should be informed by a Prompt when approaching the Signal Contact that they would be responding to assist in the capture of an enemy vessel.
If someone tries to beam aboard another vessel upon approaching an enemy vessel two options would pop up. One that says destroy enemy vessel, and the other Capture Enemy Vessel. If the attacker chooses Capture they get a 40% chance to win a ground battle and 60% chance the Defender would prevent an beam over.

Thank you

I don't call long boring space flights to get to a quest objective or location immersion. I call it down time. I have no problem with the instances. I really don't want to waste all that time anymore on travel. I want more game play and action. Than a thirty minute flight to do a 5 minute quest.
I dont mind the camera angle but in Sector space you should have the option to travel while on the bridge of the ship.
I would look forward to Open Pvp Areas.
Also, I'll pimp out a few suggestions for ground combat:

Just prior to this free trial weekend, the many, many negative posts in 'Discussion' were closed or moved to 'Community Feedback'.
We were told that this was just re-organization.
Yet this thread remains in 'Discussion' for two days, even though it is clearly labeled 'Feedback'.
Had this been yet another negative thread it would have been gone in a flash.
Kindly show some consistency. I imagine that if this actually does get moved, it will be after the free weekend.

Well, I believe the don't work as much on the weekends so the staff may not see this thread till Monday. However, that is just supposition on my part.
