Why have a bind on equip? If the item were a rare and powerful item that had not many other options to be replaced with I could understand, but it seems almost everything that I get is bind on equip. Why? I won't "keep" the item. I will want to get rid of it. I'd like to pass it on to someone else eventually, not just sell to a store vendor.
So far, it seems a very good portion of my items are bind on equip. For what rhyme or reason? Perhaps to keep individuals from muling out alt characters? Well that's not too hard regardless, seeing as its just as common to find rare items as it is to find tribbles.
I would at least say, devs, let us trade "bind on equip" items to our own other characters using the mail attachment feature so they may be used by our alts. (In SWG this was called "no trade shared"). It means items may be used by any of your own characters on your account, but not used by any character on another account. Either that, or just totally do away with "bind on equip" altogether.
Bind on equip. If you turf it for one there will be no reason to do the quests.People will sell it for real world cash which violates the TOS.Folks used to do this all the time with accounts for SWG.Grind up and unlock jedi then sell for hundreds sometimes thousands of dollars. That also violated the TOS.Then you have a game filled with farmers only playing for real world money. You can still sell the bound item for in game credits. No big deal.

and their aren't farmers here selling stuff for real world money? You should check out the farmers thread that has been going on for a while now. Don't worry though Cryptic aren't even concerned with sort of game play or they would have dealt with the named and shamed players.
Far as I can tell, if you were going to sell an item for cash you wouldn't have put it on in the first place. Check the exchange for anything above "Common" and I will guarantee you all that you see is Bind on Equip.
So I don't think its a farming nerf tactic.
But my question still stands, why have Bind on Equip when, as it looks, a majority of items are that way? What purpose does it really serve?
Like I said in my original post, if it really was a rare and powerful item, I could understand it being bind on equip. A one of a few item. I think all the item classifications need to be moved down a rank too while I'm at it. Very rare to rare. Rare to Uncommon. Uncommon to common. Common to junk.
Your intention was to give the items away when you were done with them; that would be the major problem. If I were allowed to give everything away when I was done with it, my friends who are coming up behind me wouldn't have to do any adventuring or quests to get their "tricked out gear." Multiply that idea by the number of players in the game, and it becomes apparent that for each group of people playing, only half as much loot is needed to keep everyone fully loaded.
Boring!
By making something usable for you only, they ensure that anyone else who wants to use a similar item has to get it themselves.
The came about become the early MMO started to over run with rarest game items. A MMO always keep making more using drops or badges. In sort the very rares would be easier to get then the white commons in the game.

Balance I could understand. Though now with alltheRaFthreadsoffering in game credits, to the newest players that STO will have, how does this not help them buy purples and blues for their levels? I just checked the exchange, prices on purples for Lt.'s are pretty cheap. Cheaper still for blues. How is that any less boring for those new people? "I want a ship so I will help new players get "very rare" or "rare" items in game at almost no cost or work to themselves". "Hey that guy was so generous I now have all "very rare" and "rare" BO's already!! I'm better then everyone." That is what some of the STO playerbase is providing here. It is just a free ride for nothing but a referral. That to me is what is boring. Not selling the stuff I don't need or can use anymore into a 50% return on a set valued computer generated sink hole.
There are too many "very rare" items making them 'kinda' uncommon. There are too many "rare" items making them common.
But I'm getting somewhat sidetracked on a different subject. There isn't a thing that I own personally that I can't not give to someone else for a fee or not. The only possible thing left that I have is my life. That's the only thing that is bound to me. There is always an item that is better that I am able to get and achieve. There is always someone else down the line that cannot get what I don't need. I know that using a realistic expression doesn't compare to a "game". But that just shows you, that somewhere, the economy here, is for lack of a better term, eff'ed up.
Maybe that is what it all boils down to. A very bad, and a worsening economical structure.

Not just the early MMO (whatever your idea of Early is) but in the 'modern' MMO that is Star Trek Online. Very rares are already easy to obtain as it is. Rares seem to be even easier to obtain. Check the exchange especially for LT's. Check how many people deck out their ships/bo's/character with purples. Its commonplace. Like getting locks put on the front door.
Sure new people generally wouldn't be able to do that easily without a lot of work to be put forth. But if you check the links above, its going to get easier and dumbed down for them to do so. And a possibility of getting even worse, if bribing referrals with ECs continues to be a factor.
