Been playing for a few days and thought i'd post some first time user feedback.
Overall it's pretty fun. just been running missions. only two things are getting on my nerves:
1. Travel is too slow in the "warp space"
2. The space flight isn't in "true" space. pitch roll and yaw all cap out at what seems ~60deg this is extremely inconvenient for maneuverability. I never got why in games and movies everything in space follows the same "up" direction, while in reality there is no "up" in space.
Way better beginning than EvE(never made it past the trial, not enough direction to start). I just wish i didn't have to shell out the money to just try the game, 1 week trials that anyone can get are always nice. Unless I find out the game allows everyone to get the best of everything, I'll probably be playing for a while. Forcing choices/trade offs is necessary for a good PvP system. Champions Online was a perfect example of why not to let everyone have everything they could possibly want, it ruins PvP. Now i know you guys are tied to CO, but I'm hoping your only connection is the person writing the payroll checks.

Most of us landlubbers are used to an "up" and "down". Star Trek was never really much on real world physics most of the time (explosions and sound in space ftw). Plus the starships in space always seemed to meet oriented the same way for some reason.
I also question how come no ship at warp speed never ran into another ship going at warp speed on another heading. There's several car accidents daily on highways in Dallas, you'd think there'd be an occasional one in space too. Especially with some ferengi piloting while sending a text message to a potential customer.

This isn't EvE. I played EvE for over 5 years. Different game.
I want to like this. I really do. I hate the bugs. They are wrecking it for me and at a very fast pace. The way I understand it, most are exclusive to Science so if you didnt chose science you might be fine. PvP is lop sided to Klinks. You will find that out very soon. It starts early too. Thier started ship has 3 universal BO spots. Feds are forced in to class based and cant stack specials like Klinks can and do.
New player here, too. I'm mostly loving this game, but have to admit some of the instances are indeed so buggy that I, for now, will try and avoid them if at all possible. There are two in particular that come to mind. One is a PvP zone where you are trying to decode Borg Encryption Nodes whilst very lkely battling Klingon players at the same time. The problem is the Borg probes that defend the nodes. About 75% of the time they get stuck on the sides of the nodes, making it impossible for you to target them while they can still target and attack you. You can't decode a node while being blasted.
The other is in the Sirius sector, if memory serves correctly. it's an instance where you beam down to investigate some odd energy readings being given off by the local flora. Well, your away team will suddenly vanish on you once down there, leaving you alone. The enemies that follow you down to harass you also fall into the terrain. You can't target and attack them, but they can target and attack you. Unfortunately, a couple of these enemy groups are hanging right around the plants you need to scan.
I'm not calling it quits yet. I'll still give it plenty of time to be smoothed out. If I understand correctly, CBS pushed this game out before it was actually ready, so I don't blame the designers at all for all of the unfinished aspects of STO.
As you're classing yrself as a noob I suppose I'd have to class myself as experienced. I started on the journey to the 24th and a half century back in early 2009, waited patiently to be invited to the OB (purchased CO for the privelige - and oh what a waste of money that was), shelled out for the Digital Deluxe and a 1 yr subby and now I can kiss the approx AUD$200 investment goodbye...I am so disappointed in this game - at the moment. It may improve but based on my experience with CO and the bugs STILL blatantly apparent in this game, I'm not holding out hope.
Sorry to be a downer but I'd advise AGAINST investing any more money or time in this game...but that is just my humble opinion.

I'd blame the designers...exactly the same kind of problems with their other 'wonder' game CO. If I was Paramount I'd be suing Cryptic.
The game has markedly improved since beta and launch. Certainly not as much as many would like (there's still a glaring lack of things to do at RA, for instance, and the limited PvP starts to grate after awhile). I've found that with the addition of the difficulty slider going back through the content has been more challenging and fun. Fleet actions are improved by being level-gated, server stability is vastly better than in Week 1, what were once very frequent crashes for me have been reduced to near non-existence. The Devs are being fairly transparent with what their plans for the future are, seeking out player input, and offering little goodies here and there to reward those who've stuck through the early stumbles. Even the baneful "Aid the Planet" missions have some new relevance, thanks to the latest patches.
So, yeah, some people will still say the game sucks, and I won't argue with that opinion, but I do see Cryptic making tangible improvements to its game and taking steps forward to make STO the experience it could (and should already) be.
Just think about it. In the movies/television shows, warp speed is a relatively slow method of travel compared to the size of the galaxy. If the warp speeds reflected in the game were accurate to the shows, the USS Voyager would have traveled to Earth from the Delta Quadrant in about a hour or two - instead of the ~70 years distant from which they initally started.
That being said, I do think Sector Space needs to be looked at. It's pretty dull, overly simplistic, and doesn't lend it self at all to an MMO feeling.
I'd also have to admit that I don't like the current space flight physics and limitations. First off, why is a ship limited to a 45 degree angle up or down? Secondly, larger ships seem to "skid" when turning. Never did we see the Enterprise-D or -E "skid" when making a turn. My Galaxy class and larger ships don't seem to be able to handle a turn without skidding their aft around. If I turn constantly, eventually my ship's bow will be facing the opposite way I'm travelling! Sure, once I stop turning, the ship's orientation eventually coreects itself, but it's just completely not realistic.

Unless there is PvP that would be thrown horribly off balance I don't see why travel needs to be so slow, I don't play for hours on end, and i don't want a big chunk of my play time going to slowly perusing through space.
The only instance where slow travel could be needed is when there are pvp matches going that people can join into after the start of the fight. but even then it's not that big of a deal. As long as there are caps for the amount of people on each side, slow travel is not needed. But i have not experienced all the game so i can offer accurate input here.
I should at least be able to plot a course to where ever I want to go(not only in the current sector) and then walk away for 10 min while I travel.
We are doing "episodes" right, and in episodes they skip through the boring travel bit.

1. Totally agreed. It's supposed to be Warp Speed but it feels like riding tortoises. Drugged tortoises.
2. Apparently they tested full 3D control early on, and got enough complaints from their testers that it was "too disorienting" that they have ruled it out.
They have compromised, though, and said they will be increasing the maximum pitch to ±85°. They are also considering implementing a limited number of pre-programmed maneuvers such as rolls and loops at some time in the future, but have stated that they do not plan to ever implement full 3D controls.
Many people have disagreed strongly, but those may only be the subset of people who don't find it disorienting. I don't know if it's truly a majority of players that wouldn't be able to handle it, but apparently Cryptic feels that it would be a large enough number to be bad for the game.
Some have said "then let us have it as an option", but that would confer an advantage to those who had it enabled over those who didn't. (Do a search for threads with "3D" in their title for more information.)

Thx for the info.
This is Cryptic, they don't have a very good record with tailoring to the needs of the more experienced, and not a very good record with PvP in the last few years. From what you said I'm going to assume they will never make a truely 3d environment. after all they implemented CoX issue 12 effectively getting rid of all the PvP players, and they released CO which had a horrible leveling/power system which ruined PvP at high levels.

Actually, Cryptic had nothing to do with CoH from long before Issue 12. So we can't really blame them for the changes to PvP in CoH.
But I believe that unless they follow the lead of separating PvP effects from PvE effects for powers/skills, they'll ruin PvE in a hopeless quest for PvP "balance".
I am one of those people who can't handle true 3D control. I quickly become disoriented, lose track of where I'm at relative to everything else, and eventually start to feel nauseous and motion sick. I have no idea what fraction of the playerbase I actually represent, but the lack of "true 3D" is, from my point of view, a good thing.
