Something simple

One of the most annoying things I'm finding is the constant holds, particularly with my Klingon, who prefers melee combat. I was on an exploration mission fighting Remans, and was unable to attack even once, as I was chain held for the entire duration of the battle. Thus, I make this suggestion:

Make characters immune to holds when they have a melee weapon equipped and active (at least holds caused by melee actions, such as butt-ends). Alternatively, have holds caused by melee affect BOTH combatants. It can be reationalized as them locking weapons and pushing on each other. IT would be far less frustrating, I think, and would give an incentive to fight in melee on occasion.

What say you?

    Hypos. They break holds.

That's true, hypos will break it (though, I think the Motion Accelerator ability should, too...), but I thought my idea was thematic and gave us a reason to melee. As it is, melee weapons don't do any more damage than ranged weapons (less, actually), so I thought this might a little advantage for melee specialists.

Melee weapons, if you're using them right, do MANY more Exposes and Exploits. This pushes their DPS way up past ranged weapons.

Really? I've not seen that. I get occasional exposes and exploits, but not any more than my team provides (and they're all equipped with Expose weapons). And yes, I have specced specifically for melee, with L9 in all the relevant skills.

What I do see is a constant, often continuous string of holds as the enemy butt-ends me.

Read that, it'll tell you all you need to know about melee combat in this game.

Then start saving your pennies (Marks of Valor, actually) for the Epic Anti-Borg Bat'leth available at endgame. :)

Great thread, I hadn't realized there were particular combos!

Definitely going to try that out...

Well, after some testing, I find the combos do help a little. However, it's rather hard to do them when you're standing there paralyzed by the lastest in a series of holds, and also hard when the enemy is constantly retreating away from you.

I maintain my original suggestion, but will adjust it to suggest increased RESISTANCE to holds, rather than immunity.

Ok, after further testing, the combos can be devestating! I'm really enjoying melee combat now, thanks!

However, there is still an annoying preponderance of holds. It's one thing to be held because you've been zapped by a stunner, but butt-ended in melee?

The more I think on it, the more I like the idea that a hold applied in melee should affect BOTH combatants. As I say, when you watch a fight with swords or what have you in any movie or tv show, they invariably spend a lot of time locking weapons and glaring at each other. Consider Gowron's last fight with Worf on DS9, for example. Holding both characters would simulate that to some degree. Of course, if I get hit by a stunner while meleeing someone else, then only I should be affected, but holds caused by melee attacks would affect both combatants, as I say.
