Hi, i was looking into buying a gaming board and small keypad so i can play the game without a mouse but am now thinking for the same money i could buy a 7inch touch screen. heres my question - does anyone know if you can move HUD elements onto a secondary display? I really just want to throw my hotkeys there as there really isnt anything on the market that has 3 rows of 10 keys.
Most typical games are shown on the main screen, even on a dual screen setup; however, there are ways to stretch the imaage over multiple screens - ala Flight Sim X type games. Some MMO's are offering multi-screen support as well, like EVE, with the ability to have to center (main) screen clear of clutter.
That said, the biggest issue is going to be the resolution and aspect size. Trying to incorporate a much smaller screen is not going scale correctly. While you can rearrange the HUD for STO to your liking, it's limited to the main screen only.
The best way I've found to play MMO's and FPS's ... and any other game really, is to get a game pad (like the Logitech G-13 or Nostromo N-52TE) and get a really good gaming mouse, something with a decent amount of features/buttons. You'll use the keyboard less for gaming, and probably for obscure commands and chat.
Can we turn this into a multi-monitor support thread? Because I would LOVE to be able to use my second screen. I'm on a 32 inch 1920x1080 screen primary with a 19 inch 1280x1024 secondary, and while it can be useful to have IE open on the secondary it'd be more immersive to have that display able to house some windows.
there is a software called "SoftTH" ...which is for Tripplehead usually, might want to check how that works out with a second screen first. (i know the software works with 2 screens, but did not test it with STO, Fallout 3 and Call of Juarez 2 did pass my little test)

any info would be great!

Wow having a second smaller monitor as a touch screen for interface elements in this game just sounds like the niftiest idea ever. Brings out geekiness in me I didn't know I had.

Combine that with voice commands and you have a kick-TRIBBLE setup.
I'm already in the process of building a LCARS-like terminal to use for the game, heheh. Gonna map all the soft-touch buttons to keyboard keys (some to multiple keys, like ALT+ and CTRL+) and have some fun with it. It'd be awesome if I could put a small touch-screen in there as well.

Now you've got me curious - where are you able to find a touchscreen for ~$100-$150?
currently there is no dual monitor support. I have 2 32" HD monitors on this rig ( posted a pic last week )
I don't really feel that it would be an advantage, except in a touch screen situation. 5 feet od horizontal screen is an awful lot of real estate to drag a mouse across for people like me who use the mouse for ship movement as well as hud elements activation. Basically the further away things are from the screen where I'm flying my ship just makes it more difficult ( as I stop turning to activate a power)
I suppose that there could be some mileage in having a second scree to drag map and minimap elements to along with power indicators. Being able to have these scalable on a second screen would give us better views on the main screen ( I hate a cluttered hud)
Actually, I was reading about the iPad (its not out over here yet) and theres an app that lets you use it as a touchscreen input for your Pc/Mac. Might wait until then (I've yet to think of a birthday gift from my other half) and see if a simple app might be all i need.
I'm actually convinced that 2 iPads (LCARS themed of course) bolted onto the arms of a nice computer chair may be the ultimate setup for ST:O. Anyone who's rich - please do this and post some pics - you'd be my god.
I got three touch-screen monitors laying around (maybe about 3 years old/3M) that I've been wanting to use in games; at least one of them and this is as good a place as any!

you should turn them into graphics tablets and sell them on ebay. Cheaper than the 3 grand mine cost and there are details of instructables.com
That is what I use. You're limited to three 1680x1050 monitors (or lower resolution). I use three 1280x1024 monitors on the device and it works great. But to turn up most settings I run a GTX 295. Even then, with that many pixels, I can't turn on full AA and High shadows unless I want to play with some lag spikes down to 20 FPS. A GTX 295 with three 1280x1024 monitors will give me 60+ FPS on average (I use v-sync to keep max at 60), then only dip down to 45+ FPS in really intensive areas. For 45+ I don't notice it, but 20-30 FPS I would.

Yeah, I've been meaning to do that, too. Use at least one for a drawing pad; I am a bit old-fashioned and like to draw on paper. I can with a mouse, but sheesh !

you would be surprised how intuitive it is. Admittedly I've been using Wacoms about a decade and switching from the tablet to the Cintiq screen was 'odd' after all that time. But I would not be without it.
I rarely draw on paper now ( unless I'm sketching for an oil or watercolour ), it's not worth the effort of scanning into the PC for rendering. It's actually quicker ( not to say, cleaner ) doing it with a tablet or touch screen. I'd recommend it to anyone. ( but if you are buying a tablet, buy a Wacom or do without, there is no comparison with the cheap ones ).

Ditto. I use the cheapest one, the Cintiq 12-something. It was under a thousand USD at the time and I wouldn't want to draw on paper ever again. Especially with Adobe CS5 coming out and the specialized brushes they have in it. The whole experience feels very much like paper now. Still not identical, but very close.

I just bought the adobe CS5 Master edition today. Was downloading on another PC. I expect it's finished now. I'll be installing it later. I hated CS4 ( I'd become so comfortable with CS3, in fact I'm still using it ) so it will be interesting to see if I wasted another £960 this year.

Nice! CS 5 certainly got my attention. Not only is it the first versions to run on Windows 7 64-bit without a patch, it also has some very interesting looking edge-detection, color selection, and paint brush AI features.
I'm looking to get the Production Premium suite since it includes Photoshop, After Effects, Flash IDE, and Soundbooth. I'm working on outdated copies of Photoshop 7.0 and After Effects 6.5, along with piecemeal solutions for sound file editing. But I'm going to get it with an educational discount since I work for a university (400+ USD vs. 1600+ USD retail).

If you get me when I'm really drunk you may talk me into giving you my CS4 master suite considering I really did put it on the shelf less than a month after I bought it. It still has full adobe personal support

Hahaha, thanks for the offer! It's ok though, as I'm going to grab the CS 5 soon.
I have two years of US income tax I'll be filing (they don't bug you if they owe you money), so I'll be getting two refunds soon. With that, 400 USD will feel like a drop in a bucket.

is that $400 as an upgrade? We really get ripped off by Adobe in Europe. We pay far more than you. That £960 I paid this morning is for download as an upgrade ( and considering I bought PS7 Macromedia suite 8 CS CS2 CS3 CS4 CS5 you think I deserved a little more discount ) which is currently $1,457. If I bought it without my previous product discount it would have cost me £2706 ($4,103)
I love Adobe products, can't do without them but as a Brit they TRIBBLE me hard.

Ouch. Sound like it. No, 400-some USD is for the full Production Premium, but with an "Educational" license. That means I can't use it for commercial purposes, which is fine for me. I just want it for personal use.
Cool. I love Ducatis, but they're too pricey and a little too tweaked/hard-ride for my tastes. They can certainly scream though!
I started with a '89 Suzuki GSX 750F and ended with a '96 Honda CBR 600 F3 (wasn't my first choice on color, but was a steal when I bought it.. much rather have all black).

...also ATI Eyefinity might be for you, but you would need a new expensive GFX for that and i have no idea if STO supports Eyefinity.
maybe Solution Nr. 3 would be Matrox Tripplehead2Go

not sure if this would be very playable with a touchscreen... but there you go
i would rather try this:

BTW, is that a Ducati logo T-shirt you're wearing there? Never got into that brand, but I rode sport motorcycles quite a bit back in California.
