Klingon "qelI'qam" (Kellicam) unit of distance

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Have been thinking for a while that the Klingons really should be using the measurement of distance called a "qelI'qam" or best known translated as a "Kellicam" for Ground and Space to make it more realistic... it is all over Star Trek Lore and many references in the Star Trek Movies and episodes...

kellicam
qelI'qam: kellicam (roughly equal to two kilometers) (n) [From Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and "Soldiers of the Empire" (DS9). Pronounced "KELL-uh-kam" on screen. "ke-LI-kam" is a closer pronunciation. Canonized in The Klingon Dictionary; distance from the Omnipedia.]

From

http://www.angelfire.com/md/startrekkie1701/klindic.html

"Kellicam" is also listed on a bunch of other sites and also states it is approximately 2 kilometers... but havent been able to find out the exact distance of a qelI'qam...

We could be using a qelI'qam instead of a Kilometer in game and make it just 2KMs for now to make it easy, also making it an option besides a Kilometer for those players it may confuse

I would like to know if anyone knows the exact distance of a qelI'qam ? I have a feeling its something like 2.1KMs but could be wrong...

Not everyone speaks fluid Klingon so it would be more of a hindrance than well... Useful.

Didn't Klingon Academy use Kellicam for distance? :)

It'd be kinda cool, as long as its still rounded to an even number for targeting range.

They should just name the kilometers kellicam; never seen a conversion, so why not? I mean its unlikley that the Klingon kelicam is the same, but this is more about "style" then functionalitty.

I wish they would use Kelicam

Would be very nice immersion tool.

I agree... This is another Option I was thinking about, just to keep it simple and still keeping it within Klingon lore...

A qelI'qam is roughly 2 kilometers according to every Klingon reference book I have on hand(which includes multiple dictionaries and the IKS Gorkon novels). It's stated that Federation transporters have a range limit of 40,000 kilometers and that Klingon transporters, with the same roughly the same range limit, have a range of 20,000 qelI'qam according to Memory Alpha, so 2 kilometers to 1 qelI'qam seems to be the given ratio. But there's no actual 1 qelI'qam = X kilometers given anywhere, so it's not actually 2 kilometers to 1 qelI'qam but close enough for government work :)

yeah, i guess its never really been important to have an exact number for the distance

Declare it exactly 2Km for simplicity, abbreviate it KK, and go for it!

Although I do have to wonder how many times we'd see "How come Feds can shoot from 10K, but Klingons can't shoot until 5K?"

I imagine Cryptic will include it as the standard unit of measurement when they translate the game for it's release on Qo'nos. :)

    lol I can imagine ^^

it should really be abbreviated as "qq" for a "qelI'qam" (Kellicam) so like 5qq... cannot be 5QQ as that would make things hard to see the numbers correctly... not sure if i like "KK"

    But . . . "KK" wouldn't be confusing. And we can't have THAT! :)

Okay, "qell'qam" is the Klingon word. But we're using English, and in that, the word is kellicam, right? So "kc" or "KC" would be appropriate. And avoids the potential problems of "QQ".

(No disrespect to any non-native English speakers reading this is meant by "we're using English" . Appropriate translations would be needed for the other language versions of the game.)

On a side note... This will misfire so badly(kinda like when they had a potty mouth in the council).

No matter how you twist and turn it Kellicam sounds like a girl named Kelly using a cam.
