You notice this morning when everyone was complaining about the large amount of lag? About then. Using laptop now and I gotta bring my comp in for repairs since it appears tech support isn't going to do tech support.
malwaredoctor IS the virus(i'd say google it if you can, but well, yknow). get rid of it using a spyware or virus removal tool.
furthermore, since i myself never got malware doctor or any other kind of virus after installing STO, my advice to you would be to avoid looking at dubious websites while installing software.
Please... please.... please do some basic research before making baseless accusations against a company. MalWare Doctor is a spyware/fraud program that you most likely caught by going to ... umm... shady websites. Although, to give you the benefit of doubt, you can catch something like that from legitimate websites through something called "drive-by downloads".
So, again... this is not the fault of Cryptic... it's just something that happens when you're careless on the internet, or don't have your computer properly safeguarded.
I wasn't looking at websites...I was in my 3rd hour of playing sto while eating a sandwich....infact I hadn't surfed the web or downloaded anything since last nite except for checking my university email where I didn't open anything since there was nothing new.
Damn I was almost done a mission too...I'll go try the safemode thing, thanks for the tech support.
Btw want to bet on the chances they'll delete this thread and cover it up? I'd give it a 70-30 for.
The symptoms of malwaredoctor don't match what happened to me...but if I can get safemode to work (its not working right now) shud help.
only reason i can see them removing this is because its a rather libelous (not certain on the verb for an act that partakes in libel) statement about their site and game somehow giving people malware. like i said, try to run it in safemode, run your AV program if you can, and that should clear it up. also, if your AV program catalogs virii like mine does, check the date on when the virus entered your system, then try to remember what you were doing with your pc at that time, or if anyone had access to your pc at the time in question.
Fair enough, ill check the timing, if its during my 3 hours morning sto and 4 hours day b4 sto ill keep thread, if its before that ill delete k?
Sorry I'm just pretty ****ed at them already cause for the free 30 days on the box you need to subscribe...which by the wording on there packaging isn't implied and in a Canadian court of law would be blatantly illegal. Which is why other games say free 30 days ontop of subscription...subscription required to access 30 days, etc. Which is intentionally done to misguide people into buying the game and then having to subscribe even though it advertises in bold free 30 days included. A practice seen in most credit card companies, but rarely in companies with "good" reputations. I can cite the relevant court cases to prove this illegal as well such as the famous credit card companies pre-approved credit card in the mail scam(an american case, but it helps set some of the precedent).
I apologize for having important things in my computer that are used for school+work+life unlike you who fills it with pron.
Btw the biggest reasons why I think sto is at fault is that it happened during the lag period of sto which everyone was complaing about not just me, and the fact that it happened after installing and during the playing of sto which the probability of happening is low...less than 0.01% infact if you want to calculate it based on time. And less than 0.1% if you restrict it to my active computer hours.
First about the virus he contracted by visiting dubious websites then attempting to blame his woes on Cryptic. Good luck trying to get that $400 in damages, lol.
Now he's spouting some drivel about subscriptions scams? Did you even read the box before you bought it? Have you ever played an MMO besides Runescape?
If you cannot afford the subscription or are not "mature" enough to posses a credit card, perhaps you should go back to playing your Wii.
You really should take the advice of the poster below about highlighting your ignorance.
Better to be thought of a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
i vote for an epic fail of the OP, due to not doing the BASIC stuff like securing the system.
thats like living in a ghetto, buying 10 bars of gold, leave them on the kitchen table, and then go to work without even closing the front door, nevermind locking it.
and for toyota: even when the gas pedal sticks u can get out of gear, by either pressing the outer left pedal (manual transmission) or by pushing the gearstick into neutral (which is required by law to ALWAYS be possible.)
also the breaks are always stronger than the engine. but for that to be of use u gotta hit the pedal full stuff and not just use a single toe, and do so the sooner the better, before the whole stuff heats up to a level where the break fluid boils, at which point its physically impossible for the break to do its stuff, first properly, then at all.
(eg: Porsche 911 turbo (993) engine: ~400 HP; brakes: +1900 HP, yes i know thats an extreme one, but normal cars stop from 62 mph in around 43.75 yards (like the audi Q7 and most smaller cars, but there are worse), the porsche in 36 or so....)
to me ppl who have time to get on the phone instead of trying to interrupt the powertransfer to the ground or HIT the brakes while doing +100 mph are at their own fault...
now that thats out of the way:
your desktop isnt totaled. totaled its after flying out of the window from the 12th level.
the problem u have is a software thats doing something u dont want it to, and the computer having its problems with it.
do you know someone who knows his PCs?
i think u r one of those ppl who store everything on the C: together with windows.... (doing that in itself is an at least rare fail)
(if you'd stored your school stuff on another partition (better another HDD or an USB stick) you now could just take the windows CD and reinstall it. until everything runs again as intended and is customised again thats 4 hours max, including searching for CDs etc.)
so rescuing your data, and getting rid of the thing wont be as easy, unless the safemode works.
and the date of infection isnt always the same as the outbreak. just like with humans there may be an incubation time
Seriously. If there was something wrong with the software itself, and the lag spike precipitated some event that it was exploited, don't you think there'd be a lot more people complaining that their computers got trashed? So it's just you.
Learn to run a personal firewall. Learn to partition your harddrive with more than one logical drives if you're using it for important data AND gaming AND web surfing. Learn to scan anything you're introducing into your operating environment. Learn to run a real antivirus software instead of Norton or MacAfee.
I apologize for having important things in my computer that are used for school+work+life unlike you who fills it with pron.

Yep I am beginning to think its just me....ty for the help some of you gave though, wish I could delete this thread but dunno how/can't.
My mistake, and I never expected them to pay me $400, I was just trying to state how important it was that I get my data back/computer fixed. Btw ask I've stated before I didn't go to any shady websites besides sfu.ca and while I admit our tech support isn't the best, I'd of heard from others if we had viruses by now.
And I do have antivirus programs, though sto ports are opened. Just a pain in the TRIBBLE when everything including safemode and task manager are disabled which makes it hell to fix anything.
PS: If anyone has any advice for fixing the above feel free to post...
This has nothing to do with Cryptic's STO. You just have bad or no anti virus software to keep this stuff off your computer. While you were on the internet you got a virus from a web page don't blame them
HHaruka, IF you are able to install software on your machine (some malware prevents you from doing this), use this program. It should clean it off your system.
If you can't download it (again, some malware prevents you from even downloading software) then use another computer, download it to a thumb drive, and out it on your machine from there.
Next step.. invest in a removable hard drive, and back-up your important documents to it regularly.
Hah yeah I just got spyware doctor, got it updated on this comp and then overlapped files on other comp...scanned...now it wants me to register..online
Ok I was wrong now...how the hell do I delete this thread. Btw malewarebites rules! Thanks for the link.
Avast Free Anti-Virus is free to use with registration (which you can renew yearly, for free), and works pretty well.
Yes, Malware can circumvent some protection software...okay MOST protection software. It is an unfortunate fact of the world today. Storm Botnet is a pretty good example of a threat right now, in that it could theoretically cripple the internet with a massive amount of useless communication.
Frankly, the list of threats is legion. I often have had to exorcise demons from machines, which were installed by people thinking they were installing a helpful product. Sadly, being innocent/naive now makes you a prime target.
Trust very little on the internet. It isn't big brother who is out to get you, but your fellow man.
i dont trust anything at all. makes installing things more time expensive (due to testing the stuff in a virtual machine, or a system just for testing it, depends where i am), but keeps the system safe(r).
I still think there tech support is inadequate...but w/e was my bad
yeah, cryptic's tech support is inadequate because they aren't able to offer up a solution to a problem that falls outside of their jurisdiction of support coverage.
when i go to mc'donalds, i fully expect them to fix an issue i had with the faulty catalytic converter that Midas installed wrong. really.

Canadian women proved this to be a hoax. Cleavage just causes traffic jams.
I have found more than my share to gripe about in this game. Spyware and malware is not on the list.
Do you mean internet Pron?
mainly, i think, but (almost) every site offering something thats
a) too interesting to be true
b)offers something for free, while other sites/companies want money for it
is dubious.
Yes....yes it does.......Ive seen it happen
avast is as bad as a virus avg all the way
