Suggestion: Holographic Characters

I'd like the option to be able to play a Holographic character.

How difficult would it be to make one?

I could be wrong on this, but away missions would not be possible.

The only reason The Doctor on Voyager could leave the ship was because he had a very unique piece of 29th Century equipment.

Otherwise, you'd be confined to places that have holographic projectors.

He was able to leave the ship using a unique holo-thing, but the game takes place 30 years after he returned to the Federation with it. Considering war was becoming commonplace at the end of DS9, it makes perfect sense that the Fed would want to research the technology just in case it became necessary to create a holographic army.

The Feds may believe putting holographic soldiers in the field is a violation of hologram rights... But in STO Starfleet has already adopted a shoot first, shoot some more, then question survivors policy. Holographic soldiers would actually be a smaller step than that was.

It could actually be interesting for away missions. The holographic special ability to become immune to physical damage temporarily (during which time your weapon holsters and you can't attack, basically an escape ability. You'd still be vulnerable to energy weps to avoid overpowering the ability)

If you are "killed" instead of slumping to the ground you just phase out and see the projector drop to the ground.

Maybe throw in immunity to toxins, but weakness against whatever energy-based hazards are in STO.

The projectors were reverse engineered and produced, in limited numbers, and then a Federation court order blocked production of more. Meanwhile, there are groups working on more, as part of the game's storyline.

And it would appear that our first shot at a holographic BO will come from the referral program. We get it by referring a friend who subscribes.

Just curious, where did you get all of that info from?

    Start here http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Hologram

The Memory Alpha wiki is pretty much the canon end-all be-all of official Star Trek lore. Seriously, it is ALL there, even the degrees to which things can be called canon.

I thought he saw it somewhere in the game since he said "as part of the game's storyline".

Also I haven't seen any new info about the referral rewards so I was just wondering where he read that.

AH, yes. that "as part of the game's storyline" is quite erroneous. I have also not heard anything of the referral program and holographic BOs either. They were part of a pre-order, I think, but nothing else I have seen.

There's a whole chapter about it in the STO Novel. Photonic Lifeforms are quickly advancing towards more and more personal liberties. It's the Vic Fontaine chapter in the book.

There are currently two ways to play a photonic lifeform in the game right now.

Path 1- Notice that the game's live server is called The Holodeck. And pretend that is exactly what it says it is. And the entire game takes place on a holodeck. And we're all photonic lifeforms. A little heavy handed. But gets the job done.

Path 2- Create an Alien. Make it look however you want. Customize it to your preferences. And role play (and put in the biography) that it is indeed one of these photonic lifeforms with the device allowing it to live a life separate from a holodeck. A bit more subtle. And gets the job done.

It's quite correct actually. It's in the novel.

Also referenced in "The Path to 2409" which is completed in the novel.

    As for the BO...?

    http://www.bluesnews.com/a/1810/atari-announces-rewards-and-referral-programs-for-star-trek-online
The Star Trek Online Referral program rewards users who successfully refer a friend to Star Trek Online. When a player successfully refers a friend, he or she will receive the title of Courier, a unique Tribble and non-stacking skill points for your Captain and Officers. When a referred friend subscribes to Star Trek Online, the referrer will receive an additional title of Recruiter, a unique holographic bridge officer and 400 Cryptic points! The more new people a player successfully refers, the more rewards that player will earn.

It would appear that we should start hearing word on holographic race characters in the next week.

    haven't gotten that far yet...

However, just because it is in the novel does not mean it has any bearing on the game itself. As of yet, most of what is in the novel is "fluff".

It's also in the Path to 2409, which was written by the developers. That part of the novel is one of the parts that seems to adhere closest to the Cryptic specified events.

Arguably, if you only read a couple of chapters from the novel, that and Data's resurrection would seem to me to be the truest and closest reflection of the game developers' important events. That and the discussion of the Hobus Supernova (with Janeway?).

I actually did your second option with one of my BOs. Honestly any character can be considered a hologram because a hologram can be made to look like anything.

STO Holograms likely have separate racials and a vague blue flicker like the tutorial EMH.
