I think that a good deal of us were fairly disappointed when we found out the nature of crews and ship control. However, I'm not about to speak for the community as a whole, hence: This thread for the discussion of the concept of a ship being manned by players, as opposed to NPCs. I would've placed a poll in this area to see how many people actually wanted this feature, but this seems impossible for normal users. In any event, does anyone have any ideas as to how this could be accomplished? (I mean, Cryptic seems to have a preoccupation with ship interiors, so they might take a look at this.)
Well Cryptic said that once interiors are introduced they might add a system where people can give your ship buffs by doing things while on board. Probably won't be allowed in PvP though.
This looks great on paper but I'm not about to trust it if it was implemented. The last thing I need is my Tactical Officer getting disconnected while in the middle of a fight, or the Engineer being lagged and not getting the shields modulated quick enough.
Now I would like a reason for other PC's to come to my ship in the form of a mini-game, 3d Chess or something along those lines.
I have been thinking about this for some time and I came up with an idea that might just work:
Multi-player ships would belong to the fleet. The fleet would put missions together and assign the crew. The reason I say this is you can never really know if players will be online or pulled away for an emergency, outage, etc.
The Fleet ship captain would put his/hers/its crew together and assign the positions. Each crew member's computer/keyboard will allow the individual crew members to only access the controls of their position. Of course the captain or another player would be able to transfer control to another player, if need be.
I think this is something Cryptic could work towards down the road. As long as they can sustain making the game I think the possibilities are endless. Look at Wow. They have a proven game and now keep adding more and more content, abilities, enhancements, etc.
Now I would like a reason for other PC's to come to my ship in the form of a mini-game, 3d Chess or something along those lines.
That sounds like a fun idea! I would love to see more non-combat aspects to STO, and playing trek chess would be right on target. Or Kotra, or dabo, or whatever else fits the universe...

This post is from the standpoint of my separate response. The ship could have additional players along for emergencies, away team duty, etc. If someone drops the Captain merely assigns another player to assume the position. They did this a lot in the Star Trek series/movies.

Hm... Minigames could work their way into the game, you could give players the choice of performing a standard action at about 50% or less of the maximum buff yield, or you could give them a minigame that would allow them to gain the extra 50%+ performance power. As for 3D chess and the like, I would assume that they'd make that an option from either an internal area (In a manner similar to party-ish rooms from other games.) Or, it could be an external menu, not unlike most PvP systems.
I like the Idea of the OPTION to have pc's man your ship but, not have it so that your hamstrung if you can't fill out the crew.
Reality is that most people want to have a ship of there own to play with/customize and so on.If any of you recall SWG's JTL (jump to light speed) the multiperson (pob) ships were awsome, the problem was it about took an act of congress to get just 3 positions manned on those ships even when you had a guild full of people that claimed to love doing it, more often then not they wanted to pilot there own ships. That imo was the biggest failing of the Jump to light speed expansion was the total worthlessness of this ship you spent all this time making, decorating, equiping for it to sit 99% of the time.
If they ever put this into STO it should be optional meaning that your ship can operate under a NPC crew or you have the option of a player manning that position. To encourage people to man ships there could be a slight improvement in performance under player control but, it would have to be just a little improvement such as that tach slot you can only use a tier 1 skill in, well if a player mans it then you could have a teir 2 skill there. If done right this would give player manned ships a slight edge over the guy fling the npc crew but, not so much of an edge that they were certain to win against a npc manned ship.
The next thing that would have to be looked at is that still life thing on the view screen, I don't think to many people want to stare at that thing that does not even come remotely close to depicting what is going on outside the ship.
All of this kinda stuff should be optional not required, trying to force it down people throats will kill the game. After all it is not like you can make much noticeable progress on the ground it is a lot about the ships if people don't have the option of flying there own fully operational ship then many just won't play.
Don't get me wrong I think it is a great OPTIONAL idea and I personally would love to go into a fight with real people at the stations but, there are also times when I just want to throw on some tunes and ride by myself not spend hours customizing a ship so it looks real pretty in space dock.

That said, it was early in development and a lot of people want that bridge.

And I can't wait. DABO!!
Also being able to have PC replace NPC would be interesting if it could ever be implemented right.
