An ideal interface would alert you to local distress signals, the captain, his rank and class, and the mission he's on, plus maybe a personalized message from him giving a brief description. Joining would be like entering a DSE. Click accept and you're there, no travel time, just a loading screen. It could also go out to friends or fleet members by default, as someone else mentioned.
The social situation in this game is abysmal. People friend you because you healed them a few times or shared a joke, then you never hear from them ever again. You get a message everytime they change instances, but there is no reason to care. Answering a distress call from a friend is a good way to form relationships that go beyond initial meetings. Making it easy and instant cuts down on the hassle and makes the distressed captain feel less like he's putting someone out to travel across the quadrant to come to his aid. It's a good idea, I like it.
So... what happens if no one hails the call? what if every one is kinda busy and they go their marry way.
I had this thought in my head... not this one that this thread is about (although its is a pretty good one) but what if you could call your MAIN to help you. My main is a Tactical VA in a Fleet escort he may not live long but hes going to completely annihilate the majority of my enemies before he does. They aren't known as glass cannons for no reason. You trust yourself enough to level a whole character and hes already at max level yet when you go to an alt he just sits their waiting to be logged onto again. Seems like a waste yes? Well now you don't have to waste that potential, use what you have already built and unleash it on your enemies you will be happier for it.
Obviously there are few things that you have to do to make this work:
- Main must register your lowbies on the account, that way he knows who to help.
- x7deaths and no answer to Hails.
- obviously there should be more but I cannot think of any atm.
I've seen a few missions where I could have used some help. If I could call, either for real players or NPC's for help, I might have, like the "call for reinforcements" on ground missions. As far as people overusing this: There's so way you can make anything someone isn't going to abuse so for the rest of us, this looks like a great idea.
BUMP - This is so needed I feel like I am paying a monthly fee to play a one player game even if someone does come into the instance I am in doing the same mission they will most of the time drop group and sorry to say my little Miranda at this point has a hard time taking down Klingon battle cruisers 3 at a time.
I think it would be a good idea to have a button that when hit it alerts other players that you need help and where you are. Kinda like the Help button on ground missions. I play on Advanced or Elite setting and that is HARD and I don't want to die and get the DP just because I'm alone, If I'm in trouble I want to be able to call for help. The only problem would be people would overuse or misuse it.
Captain, distress signal on the global chat frequency! The USS Parcheesy is conducting elite missions in the Homri Cluster. At maximum warp we can be there in 3 minutes should I lay in a course?
Aye, helm lay in a course to intercept, comms, send a response and inform them of our ETA requesting group attmitance.
Like i said on the other thread about this love the idea! and here's what i put on there too just for kicks and giggles
I like this idea alot from an immersion view point its excellent and realistic, and heck its just plain old neato!
Though i'd suggest you can call for aid from the first/ possibly second time you die but obviously would then be able to continue the mission until you complete it or help arrives to help you complete it.
Also i'd add in few extra accolades just for a fun little thing ( I Do love me some accolades xD)
Accolade 1: My Hero - Respond to 10 Distress Calls
Accolade 2: Your not a ferengi are you? - Send 10 Distress Calls
Accolade 3: Space is a lonely place - Have 5 Distress calls ignored (I.E no player comes to help you)
i was thinking more like having a distress buoy show up in sector space at the area you entered, representing the instance you are in. a player sees it in passing and can approach. An popup appears on their screen with the choice to click and aid assistance.
anyone in the distressed persons fleet (who is in the same sector) gets a message in their remote contacts list that makes it flash, indicating a nearby ship in distress. They can select it and it gives the option to render aid. upon accepting, it would automatically change course to the location.
rendering aid to a player should provide some sort of reward, either way. that would provide and extra incentive to help and interact with one another.

LOL-space IS a lonely place! I love the accolade ideas! I am just curious as to how this last one would activly be tracked and counted? But I do like them!

lol, that's a great idea. With every update, they should give new accolades.
I absolutely think this a great idea. It's very Trek to swoop in and save the day of a ship under attack. Whichever faction you may be, a guns blazing, harrowing rescue is always fun.
I posted on Omega-Glory's thread; I love this idea! I would like to throw out a couple accolade suggestions if no one objects:
"Risk is part of the business" - Respond to xx distress calls
"Some days the bear gets you" - Issue xx distress calls
Sir, we're the only ship in range - xx distress calls ignored
"Fortune favors the bold" - Complete distress call response level matching to a higher level that yours.
"Temper, temper mon capitan" - Complete distress call response level matching to a lower level than yours
This would be an awesome feature, something worthy of some SERIOUS dev time investment.
Personally, I RP my ship and crew as mercenaries for hire, currently in the employ of the UFP/Starfleet. A system such as this, where I can be called upon to assist other ships for the promise of EC, accolades or loot (or some combination thereof,) woule be phenomenal, and FUN!!
I am still interested to know if the devs are looking into this suggestion... this would add a lot to socialization and meeting new potential friends ingame, as well as make the game feel more trek like.
If i saw an icon in sector space representing a location where a person needs help, i would be the first to respond. swooping in and rendering assistance to others that are in need would be so cool. I know there are times i am in exploration gettn my tail kicked and would love to plant a distress signal in sector space for someone to fly by and join the fight.

What could really make this interesting is to make it so that it could also be used as a Ruse...
Say a pack of four BoP's or a Trio of K'Tinga's could lure an unsuspecting Fed into a trap...
Or visa-versa... A couple of Cruisers or maybe three Defiant's lure a KDF Carrier in for a kill.
I'd limit the initial attacking force number, based on Tier and Vessel type to keep things somewhat even and not end up being a one shot massacre.
Perhaps by only letting multiple vessels entrap higher Tiered Ships... for example, 3 BoP's at Tier 3 can only lure Tier 4 or greater Fed ships.
And make it so that the lower the Tier of the entrappers, the more players in a pack, up to say four.
Kinda like the ultimate Kobayashi Maru in Real Life for a STO Character.
This would make getting the Accolades even more of a challenge and maybe keep folks from just getting friends to help grind them out in an hour.
Another thought... make it so that multiple SOS signals could be sent from the same instance...
This could be a really great way to create an instant PvP free-for-all.
Keep the max number of players at one time to perhaps 15 or 20 and only let other ships in that are equal in Tier or less to the original attackers.
If the ratio of one side becomes 65% or greater, then allow the players on the lower side the option to immediately bug-out of the instance if they choose.
It would be interesting to see how long an instance like this could be kept going.
I'd keep the background to just a minimal star field so as to allow lower video-card 'puters to have access.
they probly saw this. its just probly a lot of work for them to implement with season 3 at its near. maybe they are discussing it for a season 4 or 5 feature?

I am a Fleet leader. I understand what you mean. But this would be more helpful would it not? Not everyone wants to be or is in a a fleet.

Thanks.
I saw this linked in Martok42's signature and followed along.
I think this sort of thing would make a great addition to STO.
I put that up in may of 09 and i think it still a great idea

Not trying to be funny, but I have to ask...what death penalty?
Yah, for real, a little Feedback please?
