I just noticed a thread by Commodore_Bob (I think it was...), and it made me wonder again why we're going from Captain to Rear Admiral? It should be Captain-Commodore-Rear Admiral-Vice Admiral-Admiral-Grand Admiral (or Fleet Admiral).
Yes, I know the modern Navy doesn't use Commodore anymore, but it's definitely in Star Trek. Remember Commodore Decker from the Doomsday Machine? Commodore Mendez? Commodore Stocker? Commodore Stone?
I agree. I wish the current "Rear Admiral" rank was Commodore (aka Fleet Captain). It would be more fitting since you don't actually gain the ability to command a fleet when you reach RA.

How about it?
They stopped using the rank somewhere between TNG and TOS.
Rear Admiral, Lower Half is the correct term, since its the lowest flag officer. (which would be the same as commodore).
Out of universe explanation, Roddenberry had the ranks corresponding to the US Naval ranks. When the US Navy replaced the Commodore rank with Rear Admiral Lower Half, so did Roddenberry.

Actually "Enterprise" proved that real world US Navy and Starfleet ranks don't go hand in hand.
Made in the 21st century but there are commodores in that series.
Canonly there is nothing that says there were no Commodores in the TNG era, just not ever shown on screen.

Yes, because enterprise has a commodore rank in-universe, means that the ranks weren't changed for TNG because they changed outside of universe. I don't think you're understanding my point there..
And secondly, there's just no room for a commodore rank in TNG.
The lowest flag officer rank insignia is Rear Admiral. (admiral insignia, no pip). ie. Rear Admiral Lower Half. That is, functionally, the same rank as Commodore. So unless they call Rear Admiral's commodores interchangeably, there is no commodore rank in TNG.
As I said, there would still be a Rear Admiral, just ONE instead of TWO. That is, insteda of Rear Admiral Lower Half and Rear Admiral Upper Half, you would have Commodore and Rear Admiral.
It wouldn't change anything mechnically, it's strictly a matter of nomenclature.
ive never liked the term commodore and considering it has not been used in so long, leave it. most people that watch star trek dont even remember the rank
Commodores were a vocal soul singing group...they are not ST canon....
Of course they are Star trek canon. They are integral to the command structure of starfleet during the TOS era. It was a rank that Starfleet dropped after enterprise returned. ( so never appeared in TNG )
It's a standard navy rank and Rodenberry wrote TOS with a naval command structure. ( but it is stated in the writer's guide that Starfleet is a mixture of NASA, the Coast Guard and Jacques Cousteau's 'Calypso' rather than a military organisation as understood in the 20th Century. )
I suspect Commodore will be one of the titles given by the Accolade system. Maybe for completing every side objective through the end of Captain rank or something.

That is if we ever see enough content to fill those ranks in the coming years...

Cryptic, can we have 11 Ranks instead of 6 please?
Fleet Captain is an honorary title and not a rank, just look it up in Memory Alpha or Wikipedia.
Edit: You can vote for Commodore and Fleet Captain to become titles in the last thread in my sig.
Really? To me Commodore seems like an old fogey term that my grandfather would've used, LOL.

My grandfather WAS a commodore. I'm deeply offended. Harrumph!
Where I come from it's the rear gunners you have to look out for
