I like the idea, but some of the ship damage in game is too much...there should be holes and chunks missing from your ship if you get hit from torpedoes and streaks from beam weapons...the damage in game right now looks like the ship got thrown into an oven and got burnt really bad.
ya but it's nice to dream that someday maybe we could see hundred of ships flying around with missing nacells and hull breaches and lights flickering on and off!!
This sounds like an idea I might have come up with in a few weeks so cudos to you for beating me to the punch.
Absolutely, when your ship has injuries you should keep a scarred look on you ship. It doesn't have to be the exact same type of damage we see during battle with flames and whatnot, that isn't in keeping with long term damage in the movies and shows.
But if we look at the damage that Voyager sustained over the year of hell or the apperance of the Enterprise in Star Trek III, after the immediate reparis involving the battle with Kahn we see that a ship can have gashes, cuts, dark spots, that have been "patched" over with silver metal. These would be repairs without the benefit of an overall refit. Exactly what would be in keeping with long term "ship injuries" that was just implemented.
So yeah, have a beaten up, worn look to a ships with injuries.
Minor Injuries: Makes your ship kind of look like something from the Star Wars universe. Soot covered, aged, badly in need of a bath.
Major Injuries: Same as above + Some of the lights don't work anymore, one warp nacelle is turned off, possibly one dark spot or one gash along the hull.
Critical Injries: Same as above + several dark spots, several gashes, a large area of the main hull is patched over with crude silver metal, main deflector blinks intermittently.
The main problem is that hitpoints are spread out for the entire ship you dont have separate hitpoints for nacelles as you do for pylons. If you did then they could implement a proper targetting and sub system disabling method.
It would also mean that if i get constantly hammered in my pulons (o er missus) then eventually im going to loose a nacelle.
What if i loose 2 nacelles how on earth am i going to explain warping out a system and limping back to starbase ?
and if they make it so if you loose both nacelles you loose then that is exactly what everyone is going to do, your going to have nacelles being the first targetted.
it would be nice to have it but i dont think its going to happen, a better system for cryptic would be taking a look at that overall baked look and maybe altering it so instead of looking like a burnt roast they do better details for the ships. But then it depends on how the ships are mapped if they have set textures OR a group of procedural textures that map the ships.
Support, and no i doubt it would require a new engine.
In fact the first gameplay trailer of STO even showed a Vor'cha blast a nacelle off a T4 cruiser.
But nothing quite so elaborate is really needed, would be enough with a few specific texture sets for varying degrees of damage.
Could also be done so the battle damage overlaps/hides the permanent damage.

Also, no.
Nice idea, very unlikely to happen.

May take some doing but definatley possible.
