In Game Database of People/Ships/Planets etc

Whilst this is a massive undertaking, and probably far to long much work for so little return one thing I would like is some form of in-game star trek database.

The closest example I can think of is from warhammer online. Every time you enter a new zone or meet a new race or get some funky armour it records it and gives a description of what it is and a little of its history. Its linked to their accolade system so killing 1000 of X creatures gives you a reward.

Bioware games like mass effect and dragon age do similar things by listing info on people, spells, planets etc.

Or this website itself in terms of the factions/ship listing and path to 2409.

This could apply to every planet, ship, race, pet, weapons etc and would be fun to read and very helpful to non star trek veterans. the readers amongst us would probably spend hours reading the entries.

Maybe one day when the devs have more time something like this could be added.

Well, there is an Accolade system coming (and it's much better than the current one from Gozer's description) but developers are interested in putting in a "ship's computer" feature for looking up information.

    cool,
i know they are planning to do an accolade system and I am looking forward to that but was did not know about the ships computer things.
hopefully that will be similar (or maybe even better) that what i was looking for

The ship's computer is a "that sounds cool but we're busy" thing.

The accolades should come out this month (along with sidekicking and episode replay - those two features allow you to get accolades you might have missed).

the only thing is i guess all you dont get the accolades you have already technically completed

say one is kill 100 klingon ships. if ive already blown up that many i doubt i will get the acknowledgement for it if the system has not been in place

if they can set it up to somehow be retroactive that would be awesome

You guys do know that there IS a library computer in game right?

Hit that button on your minimap with the question mark, then check out the list of options.

    /support

I support this idea. A lot of other MMOS have this and i belive that STO needs this aswell

thats not what we are talking about. that library only holds info on game play and tooltips, like movement and how kits work

we are talking about detailed info on alien races, planets ect. like a wikipedia of all things you encounter in game

Actually, you get them retroactively (those ones anyways).

Gozer went on record as saying those have been counting (or most of them anyways) but their rewards haven't been set until recently (and not pushed to Tribble). So, you should ding a few accolades when it launches.

Think of it as an all-or-nothing package: Accolades, Sidekicking, and Replay all complement each other.

Replay would be used to rescue everyone on the Azura (if you didn't beam them all back to ship in-game).

Is there a particular reason why the library computer couldn't be expanded to include that wikipedia-like function? Wouldn't it probably be faster for them to add that to existing code rather than to write completely new code from scratch?

Well, I love a wikipedia-style feature integrated into STO.

It'd be especially handy as new races seem to crop up weekly in Explore missions.

the library is a little basic in its presentation, i was hoping for something more advanced that that but i dont care where they put the information. if they simply want to update and expand the library then thats fine

they could update an area of the captains log, or the accolade or several other areas where the new information could be just as easily located

Well IMO it would be neat to have the Library Computer full of the full articles on species, races, places, religions, technology, etc... But I would also love it if the game out Bold, underline, etc those key terms when they appear in dialogs... so you could click on a word your BO says during an encounter... such as, "The Romulans have just entered orbit around Tau Ceti V". One could then click Romulans and the ships library would open to the Romulan article or one could do the same for Tau Ceti V.

putting them in [brackets] or colors would be nice.

I used tiddlywiki for organizing my writing notes and that's similar.
